Thought some ppl might find this an interesting starting point Maggots are being promoted as one of the most efficient ways of feeding farm animals and saving global fish stocks. A British company is farming flies to produce the fly larvae that can replace dehydrated fish meal. Fly farmer Jason Drew says a third of all fish caught globally become livestock, aquaculture and pet food, but he believes the fish catch could be completely replaced by the fly product. Mr Drew says his maggots are fed waste from abattoirs, like blood and guts, to produce the super-high protein feed at great speed. "One kilo of fly eggs will turn into about 420 kilos of protein. At the end of 72 hours, harvest them just before they pupate," he said. "Our larger factories will produce 100 tonnes a day of larvae. "That's 100 tonnes of fish we don't have to take from our seas, and 100 tonnes of blood and guts we don't have to pour into our landfill." Mr Drew has written a book called The Story of the Fly and How It Can Save the World. http://www.abc.net.a...12/s3646656.htm

Germinating these seeds is too easy. Boil the kettle, wait until the water stops boiling. Pour water over seeds and leave overnight. The seeds will swell. Sow in the morning and keep moist. In 14 days there should be some action. It's a method of scarification. There's a few ways but this is simple and effective. A. acuminata also responds well to pruning over 2 years old. New growth seems to take a few weeks to commence.

The best advice i could give is, buy a nice 1080p projector for your loungeroom and give the gaming addict your old TV.

You owe me one quiet weekend without the familiar "crack" then "hiss" of Nangs going off all night then all day then all night...... Just joking dude. They say ex-smokers are the worst but I think an ex-Nang whore like myself are far worse!

LED TVs can achieve a darker black than a normal backlit TV. If it's for a bedroom just look for a 32 inch 1080p 200hz TV. Shouldn't be too expensive at all comparatively. I play on a 60hz TV and have no problem whatsoever so I don't think 200hz is completely necessary but is definitely something to consider if it's available. Just don't get him anything that's not 1080p. The whirlpool forums are a great tool to use, definitely check those forums, the computer forums not the washing machine ones.

Thanks for posting the pics Jox! That thin new growth looks exactly like the little cuttings I got. Guess its kinda like how baby looking growth in trichos looks pretty similar across the genus. I'll have to wait until they are rooted with healthy growth before making a proper ID!

I use the plastic takeaway method, but i store mine outside in a spot that gets a fair bit of sunlight. i have them in a plastic box with two layers of shade cloth over the top, with the box sitting on bricks that get really nice and warm during the day. I have the takeaway containers sitting on top of one another and rotate them every little while. I get an excellent seed germination response. Im located at around 42 degrees south, so i would expect they dont get too hot, but it certainly suits my climate, as other methods i have used have no-where near the same germination rate. Cheers, Ob. [Edit, cause im feeling a bit slow since im on holiday ] I dont use sterilised soil, i use bog standard amgrow cactus mix. nothing special, and have no problems with fungus. With having my plastic tray on the bricks, the bricks act like a heat pad keeping the takeaways warm for some of the evening. As mentioned, freshness of seed does contribute to germination rates.

From the evolution of this thread I have read articles from both sides of the argument. Whilst I still remain skeptical about man made global warming I still see no harm in curbing our emissions. If the current western world was to cut all its spending on oil I think that the third world would use this to their advantage to rise into the modern era. Its such a huge argument that can only naturally run its course. There is cause and effect to each possible out come that have major implications to life as we know it. No scientist, engineer, economist or politician could possibly predict the outcome let alone a computer model. We are a long way from resolving this debate...... Peace

No - I dare say it is just a high school demonstration model and the real energy comes from the gas bottle they have it connected to:- but you must commend their efforts in promoting alternative energy. Photo-galvanic cells - the silicon solar cell - we are used to in the first world would be price prohibitive there. Indeed some desperate soul would "appropriate" it to swap for cornmeal to feed their starving family. Of greater use would be the type of solar hydrogen cell where sunlight is concentrated onto a platinum sponge catalyst to produce the hydrogen fuel. Where would impoverished people get platinum - even the traces used in such cells? Why, their land is a primary producer of it - except that vicious psychopathic capitalists from multi-international mining companies will not allow them possession of the resource that is really rightfully theirs.

In my experience plants can build immunity to pests. When you measure the plants sap with a refractometer to get a brix reading this will give you a good idea of the sugar content of the plants sap and a bit of an idea of the mineral content of the sap. Once the plants sap starts to measure in the good to high ranges on a brix chart then the pests will become less interested in your plants and many times they will just leave them alone. One theory (not mine) is that plants emit light in different spectral ranges depending on the health of the plants and pests can see this light and know which plants are sick (low brix) It suggested by people who support this theory that high brix plants (high sugar content sap) are not agreeable with the pests and if they eat such plants they cannot metabolise all the sugars which ferment into alcohol and kills them, so they just don't eat high brix plants. I don't know if that part about the emitted wavelenght of light is true as I have no way to measure the emmisions, but I do know that pests stay away from high brix plants that I've grown myself. http://search.yahoo....brix-charts.php
