mutant
I am becoming an expert in greenhouse catastrophes, so much that I wonder if I would have less losses without a GHwhen a GH is torn in-mid storms, the shade cloths fuck up the whole GH, becuase they get stuck in spines etc..actually the worn out nylon in my small GH got torn., lots of storms these days...relatively few damages, but lots of fucking up, some scarring... and all...Saved some of the most precious to my home.not the best begigin of the year, but what the heck, sagis are fucking optimistic

Master B
I'm watching in horror and disappointment!!!!!As one of my bridgesii's is eaten alive with black rot. This happened about two days after I cleaned some scale from it with a toothbrush and hose.I did the same treatment to a scop for no ill effect.Horrible black ooze..very stickyTop of the bridge did this termination regrow thing about 2 months agoNow the rot is about to scar it all up Edited January 3, 2015 by Master B
Philocacti
I had this happen to 3 bridgesii crests grafted to Stenocereus and I thought they're goners, however the survived and had big scares where the black rot stoke. But it turned out (just a hypothesis) that this happened in a certain time of the growing season and after that the black rot became inactive and they continued growing. Hopefully yours will be that way as well
DiscoStu
that sort of oozy stuff isn't an issue, had it happen plenty of times and it goes away eventually, it'll just leave scars is all

zelly
Master b- I'm guessing your bridge is showing you its distaste for being in a pot with gravel top dressing that is severely restricting the soil from breathing & drying out. Suppose you were forced to live your life standing in a bucket of water....you say you hosed the plant down good to get rid of scale? Where do you suppose most of the water went?I would not recommend any rock top dressing for bridges....unless maybe crushed rock 3-4 cm or larger. Potted plant soils gotta breath & dry out in a timely manner & you should know bridges are highly susceptible to the black rot syndrome from too much water and or high ambient humidity.

mutant
Dont worry, it seems huge, but its actually at the surface//// cacti wear their scars as timeline indicators.. Skins often heal after long time and reapear green below the scars... in this particular condition....Zelly and the other guys nailed it.. "Black rot syndrome" , I like the term, is definately dramatic sometimes in some bridgesii clones, I have seen in almost all species, but in less degree.. And I also agree on the note on pebbles, bridgesiis are the most prone to rot, even though its pretty hard to kill them.Black rot is supposed to aggreviate in all kinds of stress (too hot and unwatered, cuttings, other mechanic stress) , but especially in very wet conditions..Dreamwalker>>>my first greenhouse was in slight elevation, so there are frosts there, so actually, the 1st and big GH was needed there for the cacti to stay safe and unscarred during winter... but it has proved its in a very nasty spot , wind-wise...my 2nd greenhouse is close to my home and is not actually mine (last damage).what a GH offers?you can emulate a semi-tropical / semi-desert climate all year round... while most cacti stop in winter (watered or not) , the cacti in the winter GH keep growing.. You can also make cuttings all year round... actually lets say we got a 8-9 month growing period here , for cacti... with a GH you can also use those 3-4 months.. In the wet months its precious to have a warm and dry house when you can keep producing cuttings..so its really essential to the pro, at least a small one... to keep active all year...But yeah, given the cost and damages and repairs and all that stress, I am begining to think I am much better off with SHEDS, and only a very small greenhouse...
mutant
what I did?I used my new favourite tool, a toothbrush and typical biofriendly solution to rub mealies from some astrophtytums surface.. It seems to be practical with mandrake leaves too...Cheers to the dude who proposed it, I think it was zelly, man that fucking idea saved my life.did I mention my mandrakes are already doing their fruit?
Dreamwalker.
Just a Fruit eating, seed collecting note. Its my 2nd season of harvesting x seed from my san p... Trichocereus pachanoi .......Last season I harvested as soon as they cracked open, I enjoy eating cereus fruit which are sweet & succulent ...the san p...was bland & tasteless...so I thought>>This season it took several days to get around to harvesting them...they had opened up totally like a flower...& the taste was as sweet & succulent as the cereus............So I guess the sugars don't build up until they are well open...>3 -4 days from the initial crack/break...makes sense for attracting birds & bats...so maybe the seed is best taken as late as possible to ensure full maturity....Although if they are outside some bird protection would be needed.

Philocacti
2 years ago I gave my cousin and few seedlings I germinated from Mel/vin's crosses from the Nook. A lot of them grow with a strange pattern, skinny growth in the winter and fatter growth in warmer month. What's really strange is that the ones in the pots are doing way better then those in the ground. I guess his soil is very poor for good growth.

Kykeion
I can't guarantee that crack/split will heal back together, but I had a bridgesii show up in the mail like that too, I am happy to report that it healed up fine, and I believe grew back together. So I'll cross my fingers for yours to be fine too.
TheExplorer
Just plant the tip mate - it will be better in the long run. I know it sucks when you have to turn a big sexy cutting into multiple plants, but at the moment you are taking an unnecessary gamble. Also I'd ditch that vaseline, it's probably blocking the stomata and may cause issues.
