Having just come from -20 degrees cooped-up-in-an-apartment life to revisit an old garden of mine and bask in the glorious Australian sun I found some nice surprises waiting for me (and a fair share of melted lophs and other cacti that unfortunately didn't make it). To celebrate summertime I want to give away a TBM cutting to each of the first five people who reply. These are smallish, none of them bigger than 8cm, so more of a collection starter than something to add to an established cacti patch. Cheers!6 points

This is a VERY interesting story. Normally judges do not challenege cops' testimony if they say they smelled pot and that this gave them the right to enter premises or search a vehicle. It is even rarer for a judge to dismiss an admission of guilt even if the original evidence that brought about the admission was tainted. It is clear the judge was sending a message to the cops. http://www.abc.net.a...ks-free/4423220 Confessed drug trafficker walks free By Khama Reid Updated Wed Dec 12, 2012 9:20am AEDT /applications/core/interface/imageproxy/imageproxy.php?img=http://www.abc.net.au/news/image/4423238-4x3-340x255.jpg&key=b04a1bd15ad70387b122b9113e9dacafbf8dfb8ca288bf470d8dd616d1a3cf7c Photo: Judge ruled police search illegal (ABC News: Iskhandar Razak) Map: Coober Pedy 5723 A man who admitted to drug trafficking charges has had a case against him dropped. A judge has ruled a police search was illegal. In his own evidence, Michael Anthony Daniele, 27, from Ingle Farm in Adelaide admitted to packaging and transporting cannabis in a hire car, on the Stuart Highway near outback Coober Pedy last year. At a District Court hearing at Port Augusta, Judge Michael Boylan said he was not convinced by Coober Pedy police statements that officers smelt cannabis in the car, as the drugs were in sealed packaging. He said that gave them no reasonable suspicion to search the car, making the search illegal. The evidence from the search was excluded and the case dropped.5 points

^ The last two posts have have outlined a common problem that can arise when a mulch layer is not managed properly. When the entire mulch layer dries out the waxy/oily exudates that leach out of the mulch can can create a repellent zone on the soil surface that can be harder to re-wet than the same soil right next to it that didn't get mulched which can result in water runoff and patchy areas that are very hard to re-wet. The mulch drying out isn't itself a great problem as it will still insulate the soil and retain moisture underneath it, but the hydrophobic conditions it creates can be a real problem. So you really need to mange your mulch and try to stop it drying out all the way to soil level. Sticking your finger in to soil level is the easiest. A thin layer of mulch is the most susceptable so mulch as deep as you can afford (within reason). The hydrophobic conditions are more common in soils with a high sand/grit percentage & in soils with with a lot of organic matter that hasn't completely broken down to humus (most compost) so you can do a few thing to help re-wet if you do get a dry out that causes hydrophobic conditions. Possibly the cheapest way is to apply a layer of clay (the finer the particulates the better) on top of the soil just before you apply the mulch. Clay is very easy to re-wet in almost all cases(with very few exceptions) You can use a granular soil wetter, which in most cases is just zeolite. Just rake it into the soil surface before you mulch. You can get zeolite as fat absorber for barbeques. Zeolite also increases the soils cation exchange capabilites and adds minerals. Add some charcoal/biochar to your soil just under the mulch - not recommended if your soil is over PH 7 because most charcoal is alkaline and will raise the PH further. Or use a liquid soil wetter. Again, a really good habit is to stick your finger into the soil and see if it is getting wet.3 points

that forest mulch has also been composted, ie it has sat in a heap for a few weeks, heated itself up (killing most weeds) and preferably it has been turned at lest once. it's awesome, lasts a long time and the microbes and fungi love it. It's good for biodiversity. Mulches made from a single plant material are not nearly as beneficial to your plants and garden.2 points

Bought from a landscape supply place. Woodchips, bark, and leaves mixed together, coursely shredded. I think it's called that because it vaguely resembles forest litter. Most of it is residential/council waste from tree choppers, but I go to the supplier and have a look at the pile beforehand to check for termites etc, and to check that there isn't onion weed and shit sprouting in the pile. Never a guarantee of course, but I find it reassuring to look at it before purchase, and so far all the mulch I've bought has been pretty clean.2 points

Not just today but done over the last few days. Finished adding crushed stuff and some regular potting mix to the new bed, built up some "temporary" rock structures and put some of the plants I removed from the temporary bed back in. Holding off on putting any more plants in untill I've transplated a C. peruvians from another bed into this new one. Here's the victim in question. Going to be a fun job as it's wedged into that corner and I really don't want to disturb the plants around it more than what I absolutely have to, plus I'm going to have to attempt it all on my lonesome2 points

Woodchips can tie up the bacteria that releases nitrogen in the soil but it's mainly at the contact zone where the chips are touching the soil. For young plants it certainly can be a problem but for older plants with their roots established it's not really a problem. If you dig them in they can cause real problems though.2 points

I am putting in here, because the GH has cacti and little else. At first I thought it had accidentally imprisoned itself inside and couldn't get out. I let it out, but it seems as if it likes the warmer temps inside and I suspect it has laid birth inside too in the corner where it could hide it.. I am not sure if its a sparrow or a swallow. I was thinking that apart from the occasional bird shit, I would not have to worry a lot about them. I even thought they might eat hoppers thus protect me, even though the hoppers haven't shown they like to eat the cacti while they where inside during warmer weather. I haven't had problem with snails, but I thought a bird would be ideal with this too. Should I worry? Could birds like this eat seedlings??? And then it struck me: wouldn't they eat the seeds produced by cacti? Any opinions / experiences would be very helpful1 point

I just hope it doesn't get too hot for the bird in the greenhouse, and any large bodies of water could cause it to drown if it came for a drink. If its a swallow, they know when they are on to a good thing and will usually nest in the same spot each season. I recently took a photo of some baby swallows... Nice birds.1 point

Welcome to Sydney Frank Don't know Toorak but come and live on the northern beaches there are lots of fairly well off snotty nosed upper middle class wankers here, they pretend to be nice but it's a bit of a veneer. They also don't really understand grunge or poor so they get uncomfortable if you are too different. A nice car is all that is needed to assuage their fears, if you don't have one just pretend. Newtown. It's a bit far from the beaches tho for ease of visting. Western suburbs. Don't go there Unless you're a Westy, of course. And into chicks and cars and alcoholic druuuuuugs. It's sick. A bit violent. But generally fun. I can see what your priorities are.. Everything grows better than Melbourne. Everything. Unfortunately the Sydney night life is shit in comparison, at least compared to what little I know of Melbourne. And very soon, all your plants will be illegal wherever you are, and gardens will have to be authorised by your local council and run by a licensed gardener with qualifications in chemistry and law (not horticulture) Registered drug users won't be allowed to have a garden (esp. not a garden shed!) tho you may be allowed a balcony garden with fake plants that are designed to act as carbon sinks to help offset your credits if you write a very long essay as to why you can afford fake plants and want to help the environment. Come and visit when you get here, if you dare.1 point

There are a lot of reports on growing lophophora from seeds. It is reported that it is growing very slow, but under certain conditions it can be grown to fully matured plant in 4-5 years. The pictures were taken from russian forum. The seeds were planted in moist vermiculite on 11 september 2007 in CD case lid as a container. They were grown under sodium lamp and fertilized with Ettisso Hydro Vital solution. This grow report covers 18 months period of growing seedlings, and plants reach 5-5,5 cm size in these conditions. I also added some comments to the pictures. There are also pictures of 4 years old plants, and the same plants after passing 2 years. They were grown in similar conditions to the plants in this grow report.1 point

Today I got around to cutting and replanting a bunch of cacti that had been neglected for a long time. I don't know what exactly happened to them, since I haven't been around, but it looks like a combination of cold damage and possum bites (who knows!). I found bridges so wrecked that I couldn't differentiate between psycho0 and eileen, and a bunch of atrophied lophs, arios, and, so sadly, my only and quite old lophophorides turbinicarpus. On the plus, I found a four year old rooted pach cutting that looked almost as thick as it was short (never seen one grow so fat before growing upwards), and a real treasure, a 40cm fat scop pup with four ribs. Really made my day!1 point

when most mulch drys out to much it will usually become hydrophobic anyway unless its really chunky as there is lots of gaps for water to pass through1 point

Make sure if your using any kind if carbon based mulch like Woodchips that you add some manure or npk so that when its breaking down it doesn't draw the nitrogen out of the ground1 point

WOW that is a pretty good response from the police of somewhere that lock you up for weed possession...i mean i understand the mushroom situation is different there but it still seems inconsistent. ps. notice how the news websites never have a comments section open on contentious drug related stories? hmm1 point

i think you guys are taking this legislation too literal. it's never going to be enforced blanket like by the letter. it just depends how they feel at the time whether or not you're doing anything illegal. so basically everything you do is simultaneously legal and illegal, depending on who you're talking to and what sort of mood they're in. it's the vibe of the thing, ya dig?1 point

HPPD sounds like it can cross over to Clairvoyancy or Psychic Abilities "3. He witnesses objects, events of people that aren't there. For example, when sitting at home he will notice a man standing outside the window, and when he looks it was just a momentary black spot in his vision which his mind assumed was a person" People get this without ever taking psychedelics, sounds like your friend has opened up a doorway1 point

A few years ago I heard a radio show on JJJ, a weekly programme that dealt with a different drug each week, with an 'expert' offering his 'informed' opinion. Listeners were encouraged to phone in with their experiences. The information given on the DMT show was poor... 'expert' my arse. However, a few people called in, lastly a young man with a sad story to tell... Before leaving a rave with his mate in the early morning, they purchased some dmt....not having tried it before. After having ingested numerous party favours during the course of the night, they were already pretty high, and decided to keep going at home by mixing up the novel drug and shooting half each! At this point the guys voice trembled as he recounted his mates 'primal groaning' and his own terrifying dissolution into a most unexpected and unpleasant ego-shattering experience. That voice has haunted me, and I've wondered over the years about his story, and about IV use of psychedelics. I know in clinical trials of , say, DMT, IV or IM (intramuscular)administration is the norm so that dosage is accurate. Of course, the dmt here will be pure...what about illicit dmt? I'm sure the product available on the black market varies in quality, but given an 'average' sample, what are the potential risks of IV administration (relating specifically to purity/contamination with solvents etc of sample)? No, I'm not sitting here with a pack of fits and a spoon doing a risk/benefit analysis...I'm just curious. Are there really people out there wacking up dmt? And, hypothetically, if the sample were pure, wouldn't prudent IV/IM admin of dmt be safer (or at least healthier) than smoking?1 point
