  2. Not as much as the facade of responsible, family-friendly fresh food people Woolworths also operating the largest network of poker machines in Australia through their ALH Group, an ever-expanding network of 300 hotels making billions of dollars in gambling revenue. Not to mention the plethora of bottleshops under the WW umbrella (Dan Murpheys, BWS, even their 'own brand' beer), they are profiting from the misery & addiction of others. Steal from the big supermarkets if it pleases you, but bear in mind that they will simply factor the projected loss into next years price hike, so the customers are paying more to cover the shoplifters. In fact I dare say they have forecasted on the losses before introducing the new checkouts. On the self-service machines, they are disgusting. Along with many low level office jobs going to Indian contracted companies, non-fixable, disposable appliances and local manufacturing on it's death bed, these checkouts are another nail in the coffin that will drive this country into the worst Depression imaginable in our lifetime.

  3. We have all been pushed and shoved into the thinking that we are getting lower prices by taking the service out of retail and all the time the big retailers are telling us the service is still there along with lower prices. Bollacks do you remember when Bunnings warehouses first opened they advertized the fact that each section had a trades person or at least a knowledgeable person that you could get assistance from which they did until they wiped out the opposition. Now you will be lucky to find a person that actually wants to speak to you and you sure as hell wont want to ask a question because the have know idea. I don't do self service if I can help it especially not in a a place like WW or Coles I have to wander around to find what I want if I ask someone were something is they shrug there shoulders and send me down the front of the store to ask someone else and then they want me to scan and pay for the products that I have in my trolley all with no service at all but they still charge the same. I am certain that there margins have not come down if anything they will be up because they have screwed the suppliers so hard that a lot of them have given up and ether rolled over and branded there products as Coles or WW products. Has any one noticed how many small suppliers still have products on the shelves in the big retailers ( including bunnings ) Has any one been to a service station lately and actually got any service other than some lone person taking your money of you. Ever tried asking what sort of oil to put in your car or ask for assistance because your car has broken down on the forecourt. I used to work in a service station after school and pump petrol and later in life I worked rosters week ends and security was always a priority we always had at least 2 people on at all times. In my engineering shop we always have two people here. The policy is so a worker is never on his own in case something goes wrong yet servo's operate with one person in the middle of the night and that is ok ? What about the safety of the worker Bollocks that would cost to much and there margins would suffer. I never have got the attitude of they will have to find a different job. What is wrong with there old one other than it is cheaper to get the customer to do it. How long will it be before some old lady is charged with stealing from one of these diy self serve registers when the poor old dear has made an honest mistake. I could go on but I might start going on about the good old times I will say one more thing I worked in many positions over my working life and most involved dealing with customers in retail positions and managerial positions. The philosophy was always offer quality products at each price point at a competitive price and if you offer great service you will have customers return again and again. And I still follow the much same in my business now with quality of work and service being the most impotant. If I do both of those well then most of my customers are quite happy to pay extra for the job. Cheers Got

  5. The plastic one I bought less than 6 months ago had literally blowin itself to pieces and was at the point of being more duct tape than plastic! So I found this on Trademe for the cost of 2x new plastic ones. It looks to be a few years old, but plenty of life left in it yet! I've used rust converter on the galvanised base where it was starting to wear/rust. Had to extend the boxing I had put down for the other greenhouse which was a bit of a mission, but here it is! I've used the shelving from the plastic one inside until ai have time to build some better shelving. Oh and the ugly brown fence is on the list of things to replace - should be replaced with a nice black fence like the rest of it.

  8. I got a packet of mixed open pollinated catha seeds from ph sometime in may-june of 2011 & promptly stuck them in the refrigerator....then forgot about them for 14 months. I found a simple tek somewhere about planting them wing up in a humidity dome, and all 36 seeds I planted sprouted. After a few weeks in the humidity dome, I took the cover off and stuck them in the shade under some palm trees....then sorta forgot about them again. I'd usually remember to water them just before they totally died. There might be 15-18 still alive, desperately needing to be transplanted. And I still have 50-60 seeds left that I'm 99% sure are still viable.... If you look hard, you can see 3 acacia seedlings that also need transplanting....

  12. ballzac, we recently ahd wollies move into Mullum. There was a big promise of jobs for young people because jobs would be transferred from the existing small supermarkets to woolies as well as extra jobs created because those who were going to woolies in the nearest bigger town would start shopping in mullum instead. Then the self checkouts opened and the normal check out lanes are rarely staffed. Suddenly there are a shitload less jobs in mullum. I understand that we need to move with the times and evolving technologies, but I think if the only thing that ever matters to us is the labelled price of goods rather than the social costs attached to it then we are doomed. So now unemployment in mullum is higher, but our food is a little cheaper. What's more important though? Also, what bothers me more is the financial drain these huge corporations cause. The purpose that woolies serves was previous served by 3 butchers, 2 greengrocers, 2 supermarkets, a farmer's market, lots of local farmgate sales, a healthfood shop, and all of their many staff. Many of these businesses are no longer viable and their extra jobs are gone. The majority of the money that was previously earned or brought into the area would be distributed via wages and local investment back into the local community. Kids had casual jobs with caring employers. And many shops would buy from local producers because it was cheaper for them to do so. Woolies on the other hand buys nothing local and pulls all the money out of the local economy. Nothing stays here unless locals have shares in woolies or are directly employed by woolies. In the late 90's banks started closing rural branches because they found it was too expensive to maintain them. 8 years later they realised it was too expensive NOT to have them. ANZ was one of the earliest to move out, but decided at some stage to move back into many towns that the other banks deserted and thus their market share rose dramatically. Now the major banks have almost as many rural branches as they used to before the closures started. The customers voted with their feet and their dollars. I don't think the same thing will happen with supermarkets because our society is obsessed with the concept that we are doing it tough and that we need to save every dollar possible so we can buy more pointless crap and luxury items. I am not on of them. I prefer to take my money to businesses that buy local, employ local, pay fair prices for their produce and charge fair prices for their produce. That usually means spending a little more, but at least I know I am contributing to the health of my commnity rather than just looking after my own wallet and feeding the leeches. If you remove all the real jobs you end up with an economy like the UK which is based on the financial sector and really doesn't produce anything much. Ask them how that is working out for them for the last few years....

  13. In my opinion: 1. The top one (cuzco/knuthianus) looks like it has some scarring from rot in the past or something else. The small black spot should just heal. The speckly white stuff is scale. I wouldn't spray with pyrethrum though, most Trichos hate it and it could cause more problems. I usually just scrub the scale off with a toothbrush. 2. The second one (pach/scop) looks OK to me. Maybe a bit pale and spotty from excessive sun or something, but otherwise fine. 3. The TBM also looks fine to me, just a bit of scarring from some past wounds.

  21. Ballzac, do you actually have a grasp of whats happening in corporate Australia, or is this more of your self-assured speculation dressed up as fact? Financial Services & Customer Service Centres are being reviewd for viability in moving offshore. This is one of the top points of study for CFO's in this time of 2012 and beyond. I could list a dozen names off the top of my head of companies that have offshored their functions in the past two years. Huge industry names, many of them Aussie companies, certainly all of them have a major Aussie market exposure. Gone. People working in these sectors locally are finding the job market to be devoid of many permanent opportunities, because companies will not commit, knowing that a viability study might be around the corner. There is presently no growth in the recruitment market. Average salary reports show that the median pay has not gone up in five years. This is not a cyclone arguement, this is real life in 2012. The removal of tens of thousands of jobs in one sector does not create new jobs by some mysterious default. We're not talking about replacing trucks with trains, or a meat industry with vegan agriculture opportunities. it's about jobs ceasing to exisit in this country. Its about manufacturing coming to an end, because its simply not viable to produce goods under our minimum wage laws, when the competition is imorting for a fraction of the cost. Sure, people will find other jobs. for now. But what about as more corporations move offshore ? They arent investing into future growth of their local employ, they want to report a bumper profit for the shareholders at their next AGM. The little guys' welfare doesnt factor into it. In the case of technology, the supermarkets didnt install them to lose money carrying staff for other tasks, that's for sure. If youre a checkout person, well bad luck, your job is in danger. You won't be kept on to polish apples in the produce section, it'l be a boot in the bum and out the door. Presenntly, Australians are resiliant enough to survive, and the unemployment figurees are not (yet) truly reflective of what's happening in the real world corporate Australia, of which I can assure you there's a lot of 'how can we' questions from executives looking towards their next performance bonus.

  22. That's "cyclones are good for the economy" reasoning. I don't see why we should have a problem with using machines for menial tasks and free up human resources for more demanding tasks. Real economic growth comes from work being done, and the more machines are doing the simple tasks, the more work will get done over all. If we follow your reasoning to its logical conclusion, we should be getting rid of ATMs and employing a lot more bank tellers, banning cars and employing rickshaw pullers, employing teams of human computers for numerical calculations in meteorology and other computational sciences, etc. Then we can see if you're right and we end up with a booming economy, or if we turn into the most backward and poor country in the west.

Shoot me your details via PM, and I'll donate a couple of tiny Bridgii x seedlings to help get your collection underway. 25. I think that would be to a large extent Baby Boomers You've got to understand where they are coming from to understand their belief system. Many from that generation have lived their entire lives as good corporate citizens and their belief systems (that you touched on ie brainwashing & propaganda) are deeply instilled and unwaivering. In many respects that ideology is reinforced by their material success, there has never been any need or desire to think on a different plane because their ideology has netted them everything they desire -two houses, two cars and now that many have re-paid the bank, to them the system just works. Anything that doesn't fit in with this materialistic paradigm to them just seems wrong, for them it has worked well and they expect the successive generations to blindly follow their lead and play the game of whoever dies with the most shit wins. The game is expected to played by rules that have dictated largely by corporate moguls such as Dupont General Electric and the like. If you were to put yourself in their shoes, growing up post WW2 with the arse hanging out their pants and then watch the western world transform into a prosperous utopia (in comparison to the poverty they were born into) then you could start to appreciate their belief in the system, a system for them has worked very well. Given all what I've touched on, anything that doesn't fit into that paradigm (living your life with the primary motivation of material gain) just doesn't resonate with their belief system. Let's face it, from that perspective a teenager spending his days and or nights perusing anything other than material gain is just not right and seeing and hearing about people fucked up on drugs (some of them make no distinction between heroin, marijuana or speed) just reinforces that belief system. The sensationalist current affairs type programs that they love serve to reinforce this as well. I'd go out a limb and suggest that about half of them couldn't give a shit either way, but the ones that do think MJ is wrong are very motivated to prevent it becoming legal because they think we will end up like some of the third world countries where MJ is part of the culture. They won't look outside their materialistic belief systems and appreciate the economic factors that have kept those countries in dark ages ages ie the world bank and big corporations. So they will forgive you if you get pissed at the Christmas party and pretend to fuck the dog in front of the kids, just don't get stoned and sit in the corner.

  33. With a little time and effort anyone can have a far broader variety than they could of ever had in “the good old days”. The Internet is overloaded with as many technics as you can imagine and there are heaps of seed banks in England that deliver all over the world, with exceptional stealth. “That’s just in theory obviously, I’m just going by what I read on the Internet”. Not like you can break the law, even if it is a completely illogical & feeble law. Of course, if you are worried about breaking the law, then you could always just go buy some incense. Don’t worry if you end up on the floor, convinced you’re about to die before your 30th birthday from a fucking heart attack, well you are simultaneously completely freaking out about the absolute meaningless of your very own existence! At least you won’t be breaking the law.

  34. Cool, so no dogs in the past either? They have become standard at many mainstream festies, searching punters for.... things Gotta say that I was blown out at how self-governing regrowth was. The 'security' were volunteer 'heads', the first aid tent was a ghost town, because nobody couldn't handle their shit, people looked out for each other if they fell while in the dance pit. We could meander aimlesly for miles on the property for times where we wanted to get away from it all. Not a single fight or altercation took place in three days. The audio quality from all the stages restored my faith in live music, knowing that there are still top sound engineers out there (wouldnt think so based on rock gigs I go to), and the food was cheap and tasty, not to mention an endless supply of chai. So yea, if that's anything to go by, we'll be going to Rainbow Serpent !

  40. the best one at those things is, if you fuck around for too long, the machine says "do you wish to continue with your purchase?" and even if you have a hundred things in the weighed 'postshop' bit, it just goes "okay cool, seeya" and starts anew, leaving the 'shopper' free to walk off with the items it looks exactly like they purchased. i don't do that btw, just sayin. whoever programmed these things is either a complete fucking moron or an evil genius...

  44. My Mrs found the site a bit awkward to navigate. A link back to the home page or a page with a full list of stock would be nice to have on every page. She was trying to get back to the list of Loph seeds available and had to go through a few steps. I didn't have much drama once I was familiar with the site, but she bitched a bit. The checkout all works perfect and the paypal payment system helped sell it to my Mrs, she won't give credit card details to anyone these days.
