I still have some re-potting & organizing to do but I would like to start showing you all my garden. A special thanks must go out to 2Deep for giving me some help . I hope you like Exposed to the elements Euphorbias Cactus(cereus, echinocactus,myrtillocactus,oreocereus,parodia,pilosocereus,polaskia,stenocereus,trichocereus & others) Echinopsis(unknown random spp, crosses) Greenhouse(astrophytum,blossfeldia,haworthia,lophopora,mammillaria,pachypodium,selenicereus,stapelia,trichos,seedlings & others) Mammillaria's Pachypodium's Lophophora's(grafted,hardgrown) Seedlings(astros,lophos,melos,turbs) If you have any questions or what to see a more detailed photo of a plant please ask, these photos are just from a distance to give you an idea of my garden & don't show everything clearly. Jox Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks mate,I have space but unfortunately it belongs to someone else , hence everything is in pots & the elchepo greenhouse.Just a couple of things I forgot to mention, if you click on the photos it enlarges them, also if you spot any doubles & you want to discuss a trade let me know as I'm always chasing new plants & most importantly for me is trading pollen, some of my lager cacti are going to flower & I am keen to get pollen for other plants. Jox Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share Posted October 2, 2013 Thanks mate,I find that Selenicereus is great as a stock, the only thing I would advise is good hygiene when preforming the graft as it seems more prone to rot at the join than say peres but if you get it right they crank out the growth.Those are my little caput-medusa & were sown on the 7/1/13 making them nearly nine months old, they have been growing under a 600watt MH light through winter & the one in the green house were put out there two weeks ago to see how they go. I still have some in my grow room & look forward to seeing which grow better, natural spring sun or the grow room which I run on normally daylight hours. Here are some better photos of them. Jox Posted October 2, 2013 Author Share Posted October 2, 2013 (edited) Hi zelly, thanks mate I am glad I inspired you but I have seen photos of your cactus & there are truly inspiring !!The seedlings in my green house have been re-potted once, I start my seeds of in sifted seed raising mix & coarse river sand (about 50/50), they are planted into chinese container & put in a little humidity crib in my grow room, for the first month I cover them with 50% shade cloth. When they get to crowed I plant them into 63mm square plastic pots, the mix I am using for them is sifted cacti mix 40%, coarse river sand 40% & medium perlite 20%, I top dress them with the river sand. Watering these from above can cause some dramas, sand washing away, perlite floating to the top so I have a large tray that I fill with water, I just place the hole tray of seedlings in this until they have soaked up the water & the top dress becomes wet, then I take the tray out & put it back in its place on the green house. They normally dry out in about four days & now it is warming up here I am doing this weekly, so they have about four days of wet/damp & three days of completely dry. I noticed that my pots on the ground had snails living in the cavity in the base underneath the pot... And how much area does it cover?Hey mate, to be honest I can't be certain how much it cost as this year I didn't have a choice & had to many seedlings on the go & they would of struggled even in the green house, all I know is my misses says the power bill is up . I only run it on the same hours as the sun is up but my seedlings are cranking & want to run it through summer but will see what the misses says , running it through summer would cost me more as I would need to run fans etc, I did not need to do this through winter as the one light kept the nice & warm. As far as growing area under the light,it is about 6 foot long & 4 foot wide with the first 4x4 foot area being the best & the other 2 foot out is great for germinating seedlings & grafts.@Kykeion & indiandreaming, I used the pallets to stop the roots growing into the ground & have found it much easier to spot the growing roots out & now know when things need to be potted up . As for the snails, the pallets make great homes for my resident family of pink tongued lizards & these awesome little creatures eat all my snails, I found about 100 half crushed empty shells under them just a few weeks ago & to be honest I can't tell you the last time I spotted a live snail around my place. I will add a photo of the shells this arvo.Now to you boggy woops I meant Ceres , you are always full of lovely comments & i appreciate them! Jox Posted October 7, 2013 Author Share Posted October 7, 2013 The pink tongue skinks (Hemisphaeriodon gerrardii) are the best natural way to keep snails away, I have never use poison or baits as I would hate one of theses skinks to eat a poisoned snail. Here are a couple of photos, I lost count at 80 shells , the second photo shows how the shells look after the snail has been extracted, all the shells have the same damage. I rent & this month my lease is up, the lady that owns the house lives in another state & is a grumpy bitch!! I mow the lawn on a weekly basis & keep the place looking neat, the real-estate does three monthly inspections & sends her photos of the well taken care of garden & this week the bitch has given us an ultimatum " move out at the end of lease or pay an extra $20 a week & she will get some one to do my lawns every three weeks" this annoys the shit out of me as when we moved in I spent the first week cutting the meter high grass & weeding gardens & driveways. I have been looking at doing the same for my greenhouse but my shelves are only about 400 deep so I am thinking I will have to fabricate my trays.Are the tables you are using made for the purpose or have you adapted to suit. Jox Posted November 7, 2013 Author Share Posted November 7, 2013 Thank fellas,Hey Got,From the photos I put up it is hard to see the tables properly, they are made for hydroponics & are plastic molded trays that are 900mm x 900mm by 100mm deep, they are sitting in/on aluminum stands that are 500mm high. They are made with two holes in the center, one to pump water in & the other to drain the water back out, to do this you need to have a container under the table that holds the nutrient filled water & a pump on a timer the idea is the pump fills the table with water flooding the root system of your plants for a period of time & then it drains back into your container leaving the plants roots exposed to get air, this set up lets you recycle your water to a point & you just need to keep the container topped up with water & nutrients. These tables are normally filled with the clay balls you get from hydro shops & the plants are planted strait into the clay balls.Anyway I am not using them like that, I am just plugging the holes & fill the table up with a bucket then when the pants have absorbed there fill I pull the plug.
