niggles Posted June 22, 2010 Beautiful! I wish I had the room for a greenhouse of that magnitude! I am currently looking for a new place.. I wish I could go further north where the air is sweet and the grass is greener and the caapi grows like weeds.

Horus Posted July 12, 2010 Ok, Somebody resurrected this thread. A few questions about the grenhouse. Well I was looking around and everythjing was very expensive, and VERY small. Then a mate at work puts up a notice at work for one for sale.$250 but cause he is a good mate he sold it for $200!delivered. Went up in a day.Looked a bit tired, but with a bit of lattice and a few creative plantings, looks like its been there for years. He was trying to breed yabbies in 2 big tanks inside it.....but the pipe dream never quite got there. The main reason I wanted one was to keep the frost off stuff. I line it with brown shadecloth in the summer cause it gets too hot. Never had a plant die in there,Everything loves it,and a wide variety. My only mistake was.......and this could be a lesson for most. I put some datura in there...just to round out the collection....and the white-fly loves them. Then they migrated to my psychotria. A bugger of a time getting rid of them. You dont want white fly in your greenhouse. So thanks for the positive reply folks. Another photo update this Spring. Sola Posted July 17, 2010 A very well looked after garden. Looks like it's had some time too. I have a couple of question on the grow tunnel as well, How did you secure the plastic? I have some strong winds here so would have to secure it well. I thought about zip ties but thought the plastic might just rip through in higher winds. Does it come in lengths long enough to cover the whole tunnel or several lengths overlapping? Also I have already got lengths of steel tubing long enough for the tunnel but need to bend the arc. I know you bought it like that but thought someone might know how to bend steel like that, reasonably easily and cheaply? Any ideas appreciated. Thanks Sola
dworx Posted July 17, 2010 To bend steel a form is best and then green sand is poured into the tube and it is heated , the sand stops it kinking as you bend, over that length you could probably get the bend on a form cold - maybe.
Sola Posted July 17, 2010 Thanks dworx, I've been wanting to set a tunnel up for a while. A form is like a template to make sure you get them at the same arc isn't it? Also can I use any sand or does it have to be the green? Would I get that from a hardware store? Sola
watertrade Posted July 17, 2010 Bending the steel tubing evenly to make an arc would be '**!very!**' hard. Almost impossible in my mind without the right equipment. The sand on the inside is a good tip for bending soft metals like copper but to heat steel and bend it... it would be easier going to a metal fabricator and get something made. If I were you I would just use the straight tube and change the design to suit.
Sola Posted July 17, 2010 I was hoping that wouldn't be the case but sounds like I'll either have to pay for it to be bent or just have a box tunnel. Now I'm thinking about it, I might even fit more plants in anyway. Thanks for that, gave me a few good ideas. Sola
kindness Posted July 17, 2010 Seeing as this thread is turning into a greenhouse discussion... Any ideas on starting one from scratch? We've had killer frosts here the last while and I think I've even lost my Quat plants to them so I'm thinking greenhouse for next winter. so... Where to start? We get high winds pretty much year round, very hot summers, cold winters... I don't have alot of money and wouldn't get away with spending a great deal of $$ on one as my lovely woman would probably send me out there to live if I did! Anyone have ideas for cheap green houses that are fairly sturdy? What about geodesic dome greenhouses made out of poly pipe or electrical conduit? What is good to cover em with and as mentioned about how do you stop the covering from just ripping off in a high wind? Or the whole thing becoming a massive kite when the wind really gets cranking? Anyhow, these are questions without me doing ANY research so ignore if you will... Top garden there colhawk good to see a caapi going off on the central coast certainly gives me hope peace
watertrade Posted July 17, 2010 lets leave this thread for cool Colhawk's garden. I have started a thread about greenhouses/ shadehouses and similar.
