Thought this one may be of interest to some of you Aussies ;) I have started experimenting with this tree. I have so far tried a quid, smoked some cones and brewed a tea. It is certainly active but I am yet to find words to explain the effect, Its a stimulant, anti-inflamitory and inebrient. I will start experimenting with higher dosage and report back. Here is my suppliers description of Combretum. Sakae Naa (Combretum quadrangulare) is a small tree of the family Combretaceae which grows up to 10m high. The tree grows along the rivers, or in open and wet places in southeast Asia. Combretum leaf is smoked or chewed as a Kratom substitute by the people of South Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, since Kratom use is now prohibited there. It is said that the Combretum quadrangulare contains many precious and rare substances. In some parts of the world it is used as a traditional herbal remedy to help cure sexual diseases or to kill parasitic worms in the human body, and some indigenous people of southeast Asia believe the Combretum tree has the powers of white magic. You rarely find Combretum leaf at the markets as it is mostly only used locally. There are not many suppliers in the world who are offering Combretum leaf, not even in origin countries, since farmers tend to pick it for themselves.

Too true, I started out with one of these, it was great for a while until a storm destroyed it. Broke my heart to come home to find my 6ft Salvias smashed into lots of small pieces.(made lots of cuttings though). I ended up going down to the local hardware store and for $20 they gave me a big stack of corrogated plastic top packing sheets. These are the top sheet of the stack and are often slightly damaged. I just used my jigsaw to cut out any damage and rivet the pieces back together. I collected treated wood from skip bins and built a huge permanent solid glass house. Best move I ever made. My Salvia's love it and are booming. These hardware store glass houses really are a boy doing a mans job. I highly recomend any serious growers just make your own from scratch.

Five new indolizidine alkaloids, grandisines C, D, E, F, and G (4−8), and one known indolizidine alkaloid, (−)-isoelaeocarpiline (3), were isolated from the leaves of Elaeocarpus grandis and their structures determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Grandisine C (4) is isomeric with the known compound rudrakine (1). The absolute configuration of grandisine D (5) was deduced by its conversion to (−)-isoelaeocarpiline. Grandisine E (6) contains a novel tetracyclic ring system. Grandisine F (7) is the 14-amino analogue of grandisine C. Grandisine G (8) contains the novel combination of a piperidine attached to an indolizidine. Grandisines C, D, F, and G and (−)-isoelaeocarpiline showed receptor binding affinity for the human δ-opioid receptor with IC50 values of 14.6, 1.65, 1.55, 75.4, and 9.9 μM, respectively. Attached image is grandisine B. I believe this is grown in Australia for its edible fruit? Anyone tried? Anyone have access to material? Edit: Some more info here: http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19498

Yeah, then came the "lets just sell 5X labeled as 200X" people. Due to the strange working nature of Sally D, people can get away with daylight robbery.

I think an issue is packaging on the same bench. Was informed about a batch of AM-2201 laced Damiana that was tested and found to contain one part per million JWH-018. One can only imagine how often this sort of practice occurs.

Its certainly a strange piece of legislation. What confuses me is whether the mongrels can apply it to natural substances? Obviously the spirit of the law is to catch new designer drugs. The only cases I am aware of involve CP47,497, Methylone and other synthetic designer drugs. Some goofball at MOH tried to claim HBWR seeds were an analogue of LSD, but the fact they are intended for cultivation put an end to that. If they can in fact apply it to naturally occurring alkaloids, one would assume most legal highs, which contain synephrine, chocamine, hordinine, PEA etc as well as many many common foods and supplements including oranges, cheese, chocolate, 5HTP, L-Tryptophan are class c controlled substances. How can HBWR be any more illegal to put in a capsule than 5HTP or Synephrine? It seems to me what they are trying to do is make it illegal to get high by simply banning everything, then very selectively enforcing the law as it suits them. Oh well, time to start researching prescription medicine analogues ;)

Its the laws fault. They have been banning the more fun ones since the 1930s. Whats left are for the most part mild, toxic or take considerable effort to unlock. Kratom was a good one for a while but they got it. LSA seeds, DMT carriers, Ephedra, Khat, Weed, Shrooms, Poppies . . . they got them all. Whats left that really works . . . that really gives a pronounced effect without being overly toxic (like say Datura)? I know some people are special and claim to get an MDMA like effect from Ginseng or Maca or whatever, but for 99% of researchers this is not the reality. Plenty of useful plants that are still legal, things like Coffee and Guarana to wake up or Calea for dreaming, but what is there that gives a strong euphoria or altered state that is accessible to the average researcher and still legal? Not much. Perhaps the future will see the discovery of herbal isolates that work? Or combination of these with enzyme inhibitors. Kind of like Ayahuasca, I mean if one was to try a DMT carrier on its own without MAO inhibition they would likely write it off as shit too. Perhaps there are other combos still awaiting discovery?

I use Neem on mine, not specifically for aphids, but critters in general, apply it after the sun goes down a few night in a row, making sure to also spray the underside of the leaves. The plants don,t seem to mind, just be sure to leave it a couple of weeks before harvesting.
-
Does this only apply if the seed itself contains the scheduled drug, or is it also applicable to seeds which could be propagated to grow a plant that may contain a scheduled drug?
-
Excellent information, thanks for sharing. This is exactly the type of feedback we need on this species. I am certain there is an optimal time of harvest for this one. Does anyone have any ideas on time of year, time of day etc that this species was harvested traditionally?

Suggestions for a visit to New Zealand(south island)
tryptamine replied to Benzito's topic in Ethnobotany
No Kava bars in NZ, let alone Taupo. There is a place in Waihi called the Kava cafe and a place in Auckland called the Kava bar, but they do not serve Kava, only alcohol. Prices range from $35 - $120 / kilo - you get what you pay for as far as quality goes. Supermarket kava is $10 / 100 gram. Cheap Fijian Kava often contains the aerial parts of the plant which may be hard on the liver. Prices in NZ are obviously more than in the islands due to shipping and customs / quarantine clearance. -
A Kanna spray sounds ideal. I love the effect of snorting Kanna but my nose just can,t take it anymore. Smoking and chewing seem less effective.

Suggestions for a visit to New Zealand(south island)

I am in the Nth Island, but have a greenhouse full of Salvia growing if you wanted to try to quid the fresh leaf I could courier some to your hotel, pm me if of interest? Also have quality Kava (Supermarket Kava is crap) and synthetic Cannabinoids on a herbal base. That's the big three really, theres a few obscure species (Ake Ake, Pukatea etc) but I have not tried nor do I have a supply. Cacti, Aya analogues etc are likely more widely available in Aus. Personal consumption of weed is pretty tolerated as long as you use common sense. You wont end up in a third world jail unless importing or selling / cultivating. There is a Cannabis consumers club in Auckland: http://thedaktory.org.nz/ You can purchase commercial stimulant pills, sex pills, poppers, salvia extracts etc in any headshop, try Cosmic Corner in Chch, Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland or MindFuel in New Plymouth, or The Hempstore in Auckland. To view products online just add .co.nz to these shop names. -
Yes, can be smoked, similar to Tobacco (contains lobeline and related alkaloids), has a bit of an extra stone going on than tobacco, like tobacco with cannabis leaf added. 1 joint max, too much causes vomiting and other unpleasant side effects. Similar chemically to (Lobelia inflata) Indian tobacco which has more of a history of usage as a stop smoking tobacco aid, however treat this one as a little stronger / more toxic. I believe the sap has been bled and utilized as a hallucinogen by certain Indian tribes, but one would assume this is somewhat dangerous / toxic.

Valerian is the best I have found. I like a high dose, up to 25 grams brewed with the lid on to make a tea, which I serve with honey. I drink Kava most nights recreationally but funnily find it can sometimes increases anxiety, especially as it wears off. Blue lotus is good for anxiety, and seems to remove anxiety caused by cannabis. While opium works it leaves swim more prone to anxiety the following day. Certainly not a long term option. St Johns wort combined with Rhodiola is good. Aswaganda is good.

I wonder if it makes much difference if harvested before or during flowering? Does anyone know when it was traditionally harvested, time of year (season), time of day? Are brews that contain flowers and / or seed stronger or different than brews containing leaves only?
-
I was under the impression that plants do indeed have a mind or spirit. What is to say the neurotransmitters we are consuming from within the plant are not the mind or spirit of that plant?
-
Perhaps some of these beneficial lung herbs could be consumed in a vaporizer as opposed to being smoked?

Pukatea (Laurelia novae-zealandiae) & Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum)
tryptamine replied to solomon's topic in Ethnobotany
^The Garden of Eden, by Snu Voogelbreinder suggests a tea made from the leaves gives a mild feeling of well being. The leaves of Dodonaea viscosa (Ake Ake) are chewed as a stimulant that has been compared to Coca. Not sure about toxicity of that one. Some Corprosma species have been used a Coffee substitutes. -
Pukatea (Laurelia novae-zealandiae) & Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum)
tryptamine replied to solomon's topic in Ethnobotany
I,m growing both but the Laurelia novae-zealandiae is very slow and still too small to risk harvesting. I have a funny feeling the effects may be closer to tetrahydropalmetine than that of morphine, as far as euphoria goes anyway. Most of the literature refers to the medicinal effects of the leaves of Macropiper excelsum, as a digestive tonic and the like, however one would assume the Maori would more likely have used the roots, at least upon first discovery, either mistaking it for or trying it as an alternative for the kava they had left behind (or failed to cultivate in the colder NZ climate) when migrating from the pacific islands. The chemistry of the root looks to be closer to Nutmeg than Kava, so its likely said Maori got quite a surprise after initial ingestion, as the effects would likely have been hallucinogenic rather than euphoric sedative. I have not managed to find any bioassay reports of the root online, but would be very interested to hear if anyone has sampled. One day I will test myself, but its not exactly top of my list at the moment. -
Good to hear you guys are getting some decent effects from this one. Personally, after trying powder, tinctures, capsules and chewing the root I have found it to do little for me. I have had far more profound effects from other adaptogens such as Maca, Aswaganda and Rhodiola. This thread has rekindled my interest though, I will seek out some quality root and try again.

While familiar with the Domingo tobacco I was not aware it was additive free. Does this apply to their whole product line or is there one product in particular? Funnily I was having a discussion with an Irishman the other day who swears that American spirit organic is not really organic, its just a marketing gimmick. "Do some fookin research man" he said, it ain,t natural in it ain,t fookin organic". Food for thought but a google search does not reveal any evidence of this.

The rescue is a placebo. I drank the whole bottle in my younger day with nil effect.

The JWH substances are not Cannabinoids, rather Cannabinoid mimetics.

Heres a couple of new ones from S/E Asia. Unfortunately women are not so forthcoming when it comes to giving feedback, especially when it comes to describing sexual effects White Kroa Krua(Pueraria mirifica) Used for centuries by the women of Thailand and surrounding areas, White Kroa Krua (Pueraria mirifica) is renowned for maximizing a woman's beauty. Today it is a closely guarded beauty secret of many models and celebrities. They claim it does everything from increasing sexual desire and performance to toning breasts, vagina, hair, nails and skin. Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pumila),(Myrsinaceae), is an elusive small leafy shrub that grows in the shaded jungle floors of Malaysia and is considered the Tongkat Ali for women. It has been used traditionally by generations of Malay women as a libido booster. They claim it helps maintain a healthy reproductive system, tightens and lubricates the vagina, and enhances sexual function and desire.
