So the most successful propagation I've ever done would have to be slowly spreading TBMC around Aus. When one suddenly fell into my lap a while ago there were around 3 maybe 4 people I had heard of having a TBMC in Aus. After mutilating the mother and producing many grafts, there's around 15+ people who now have this sexy beast, and hopefully by the end of the season there will be another 20 or so more! Then there's the L. fricii crest, Myrtillo boobs, T. pach monstrose, L. williamsii minima crest, Myrtillo monstrose, L. schottii monstrose that are all also being propagated to spread around! These have been BAP'ed and sliced up and grafted using the sticky tape method (as rubber bands keep killing them from too much pressure). Although i realised that TBMC cannot be BAP'ed as it seem to burn the tissue, also i've never seen a TBMC pup... only grow... Anyway they weren't grown from seed though.... So from seed, I have some of Nitrogens crosses which I've grown and grafted and ungrafted. I have a TPQC that I've propagated with pereskiopsis grafts that I have sent to quite a few people, although that was sown and grafted by Mushroomman. But my fav is my TPM x N1 (I mean, look at that inermisness...) Otherwise, there's this cool fellow from the first batch of seeds I gone done ever sown! At first I though it was a crest (which I'm kind of still hopeful for...) but I do believe it to be a double conjoined twin. I've grafted him to a myrtillocactus and I have a few other pups on that specific loph that look like they could go a little funky that I'm hoping will come to this season.

Last year, around the time of EGA in Melbs, one of our long term and seriously valuable members died. If you have an Eileen clone, or have drunk of the Eileen clone, you've been a recipient of Ed's work. And probably his generousity. If you ever did an Otways camping trip with him you'll know why his death is such a great loss. I only found out today. We'd go months without speaking or writing then binge on it with hours of gorgeous, insightful, funny, irreverent conversation. We'd have phone drinks and pass out talking about amazing shit. He'd pick everything apart, then I would, and we'd put it all back together and it all made sense. He'd been sick for years- really gut wrenchingly sick, and he hated speaking to anyone when he crook with a pathological loathing I can only be impressed by. So we gave each other space. Only this time I gave him too much. Fuckit. My head is full of Ed stories. There are no favourites, they're all gold. But the type of gold which fades in text. You had to be there. He named the Eileen clone after his mum, and sent that cactus clone round the world. Often twice as much as anyone had paid for, and often for free. When I asked him how his mum felt about the transubstantiation, being symbolically consumed by complete strangers at 75, he shrugged and said "Grouse. Ask her " Nobody grew wasabi like Ed. Reading his old emails is like hearing him speak all over again. All the words got used. The big ones, the small ones, the swear ones, archaic words, technical ones, words used in contexts I'd not heard of and words I had to look up, side by side in every sentence Vale fearless bloke, irreverent gentleman-scholar, hunter, mate, plant fiend. You vainglorious bastard, I loved you like you were torn from my own rib. You brilliant, stubborn, sophisticated, gentle, resourceful, skilled, compassionate, staunch, generous, insane prick. May the next place you're in find you free from all pain

Was very fortunate to be able to go back to the secret garden. Its looking stunning with all the rubbishy cactus removed Whilst collecting the loads of felled cactus last week i was amazed at the amount of seed pods all over the many, many remaining trichs. literally hundreds of fruit, and sooo many flowers on the ground excited by the prospects of collecting some, i asked Mr X if i could come back and collect some seed pods with view to germinating them and spreading some seed around. wonderfully he said yesssssss These fruits were very generously gathered and labelled by the inceptor, designer and father of the secret garden, Mr X. They are all open pollinated. Yowie open Macroginis Adelaide open Psycho0 open Cordobensis open Goliath open Cuzcoensis Murray Bridge open Len open Spachianus open Sausage open Bruce open Validus open PC open Rio Mosna open Bridgesii MM open Werdermanius Jesica open Werdermanius ABG open Spent some time last night cleaning seeds, never done this before, it will take a while to clean all these pods. did the pots with most pods in first - Yowie, Psycho0, Macrogonis and Goliath. There are so many seeds to go round of these types. Once they are all cleaned, dry, bagged and labelled there will be a WORLDWIDE giveaway for these seeds Will announce details of this on the trade threads soon as its all ready to go.

i'd be buying both for sure. take a punt and plant a few rows of each. If the seedlings had space in your winery amongst some of the back rows -that would be an added value point to the tours that would eventuate in the future. Considering the amount some spend on wasted ventures, $30 per a seeding surely isn't that prohibitive to an enterprising rory calhoun? Or is it - perhaps a truffle grower will chime in here? So you are selling certified(paid for testing) truffle.? I'd be asking how much times you have you replicated the standard and what yields you have collated as an average over a few years - that way i could? minimize/maximise my outlay costs. To be frank, anyone with some spare coin would love this in the backyard if they own the land and have some spare space. Imagine that, your own truffle but from your point of view - it isn't really that profitable to send to 5 backyarders -who will invariably- just keep asking dumb questions. Is it black or white? People want provenance i'd expect. I'd foresee the most asked question will be "Yeah but....will it grow where i'm dreaming off or live in, alternatively. So if you can provide data that shows you've done the homework on locale and needs, you will immediately get atleast, a few interested parties. Olive and wine farms would love your presentation if you could show them your inoculated seedlings would actually thrive in their environment. That's what you'd be focusyn in on, the farmers who have the money, climate and space to make it work for them. Cheers Mimzy, i've always read your mycological research as interesting but well worded for the layman(like myself), so this venture out there to get others interested is really appealing to somebody who wants to incorporate locally grown gourmet ingredients in their cucina. Chefs love locally grown, eco sourced, in season produce. So a prospective client will incorporate that into their price - whether it's a commercial venture or just some random person that just adores their truffles from the backyard. Pricing, proof of standard and adaptability to a clients needs is what i'd be honing in on. To be honest, i think truffles are way over rated and expensive so in effect you'd be bringing consumers minds more in line with reality. many have tried. i hope some peabody can provide you with more insight .

Today I repotted my largest plant, not a cactus, but a Pachypodium lamerei, a succulent native to Madagascar. It was in a pot 34cm internal diameter and height, I moved it to a 42 cm pot, an increase in volume of about 65%. It hadn´t been repotted for a few years, so it was well overdue. The biggest problem was actually getting it out of its old pot - it proved quite stubborn. I ran a screwdriver round the upper part of the pot, removing a little soil and root. Then with my son´s help we laid it down and wiggled it up and down, gradually easing it out - sadly we broke off one of the branches doing this. The content of the pot was almost entirely root, which we lowered into the new pot and surrounded with fresh compost. Damn thing weighed a ton !!

Acacia madenii This plant is the first acacia i germinated. I was sent x3 seeds as part of a trade, they sat around for a few years then in spring 2011 they were soaked overnight and planted......... all three seeds germinated. In their first year the seedlings grew slowly and by the beginning winter 2012 they were a few inches high. At this time i made preparations to move state, culled lots and gave 2 of the madenii to a mate. The third was packed with other plants into lge boxes on the back of the ute and across the nhulabour they were taken............. of course with a quarantine letter stating all plants were free of diseases or pests, this is easy if leaving WA, almost impossible if entering. Having sooooo much to do at the new location, all plants including the madenii were unpacked, potted and left to their own devices until spring 2013. In her new pot the madenii grew quite well an put on a bit of height. The new place being a lot wetter than i was use to and having clayish soil instead of WA sand i was a bit baffled where to plant this plant. In the end organisation won and it was planted with other natives at a dam. Being six meters from the waters edge, she has bolted and tripled her size in a year. Madenii is a great looking acacia and soon she will have lotsa new acacia friends nearby.....
