Girls at The Corroboree

Why are there not more girls here at the Corroboree? Is it because we are such bastards to them and make crude jokes and try to convince them to show us their goodies? Is that why?? Are we just as bad as other societies that repress women. What have we become as a community!?

I think Ethno's are to a large extent a male field of interest.

Having a quick look a the forum most days will show a lot of male sounding nick's logged in which could be a bit intimidating to female newcomers too. I imagine it wouldn't be easy for a woman to approach a predominantly male group in most situations.

Also most of the women I know use the web for facebook and not much else. After they maintain all the bullshit virtual farms and restaurants etc they don't have much time left for anything else.

I know of at least 5 active female members, and another 6 on the forum who are not that active on the board.

I think the same thing happens here as all over the internet, a girl outs herself as female, instantly bombarded with pms of a romantical nature. I think if you attend meets, ega, doofs etc etc u will find thr it's almost a 50/50 thang.

Seeing as though ethnobotany is a fairly niche little area of interest, this kind of makes sense.

Yeah the nook is actually what got me going in the first place. I guess I was getting my wires crossed a little.

I saw a few guys getting their gf's to write 'the nook' on their boobs and post it for all to see. I find that a little degrading personally. Glad that sort of thing doesn't seem to happen here.

I did have a laugh at that guy who wrote 'the corroboree' on his ballz tho lol.

Nothing sinister or even unusual. As SallyD points out in a round about way, males tend to predominate in intellectual fields.

The knee-jerk thinking cries repression when really its just a case of men and women being wired differently.

That said, there is no reason why a women may not excel in a traditionally male field and therefore should not feel intimidated about pursuing their interests.

Have been here since forever, it's been largely male dominated but up until recently it's been really welcoming to women and we have had some very cool hellchicks here, tho Veronica and CinnamonGirl have disappeared, Wandjina is gone, but quite a few persist. I adore most of the people I've met here IRL and have made good friends

I've never had a proposition from anyone except incog, and all he was proposing was that we have a cup of tea ;), oh, and some lighthearted sexual banter from CS which I thought was hilarious ( we were a smaller group then and mostly knew each other IRL ) tho I got a few PMs warning me that people had felt a touch alienated by the sheer cheek of some of the comments, which may be fair enough if you weren't in on the joke in the first place, but they were hilarious so I left them

Last 18 months I've seen enough sexist generalisation here to make me feel less comfortable, I CBFd responding to shitty discussion or discussions at times where shitty people are likely to be first responders. Then one morning I woke up and realised- hey- I could just avoid the threads I don't like! It's like an off button for the Interwebz! Awesome! It also works for the conspiracy threads

T did suggest that the misogyny could be a phase and I should stick around for the painful bits. And he's prolly right, they're mostly gone now. But hell, how hard is it if you have a complex and difficult issue, to phrase it with thought and consideration, rather than outing your ex g/f as a slut and lowering the common denominator by 50 points.

The gender balance is fascinating as it changes. Personally I reckon it's like having an interest in motorcycles, or cooking, and that at some point it will just catch on that everyone can do it. Twenty years ago it was harder to find chicks into motorbikes, or blokes who weren't chefs who could just rustle up a decent feed because it's a cool thing to do. Now it's very very standard. Once a critical mass of presence is reached it will take care of itself

What I find interesting is actually the low female representation in plant growing community but a pretty high female representation in the doof scene, since there seems to be a cross over of scenes in this community. They seem happy to eat the drugs, just not grow em lol.

All I meant is that there is a bit of a crossover - I know of at least 4 psy djs\producers on here, many others who have been involved in organising doofs, and countless other members who attend them.
