Cubism Posted February 6, 2015 Firstly, really appreciate these free seeds and the chance to have a crack at growing them. Cheers Toby!!! Just wondering how people are getting on germinating these fellas. I'm having no luck so far after trying a few different ways. Did normal acacia tek (scarification and hot water). Sandy soil, rich soil, ashy soil and watering with acacia soil tea has had no luck. Modified takeaway tek of sorts had no luck. Tried moist cotton wool too. Most seeds seem to be disappearing (rot?) Even though they are definitely not over watered or damping off. Do obtuse seeds take longer to germ? Is patience the problem perhaps?
Amazonian Posted February 6, 2015 I'm having no luck so far after trying a few different ways. Did normal acacia tek (scarification and hot water). Maybe the water is too hot and killing the embryo?...just a thought. You can use boiled water but not after scarification, I think thats how it goes?. I recall removing the seed coat on some A. phleb' seeds after a few days soaking, then planted them and they sprouted, but didn't survive much longer after that, Doh.
obtuse Posted February 6, 2015 i have a similar problem with acacia in general. i recommend pouring on mildly hot water after scarification. after the seed has expanded removing the the seed coat. i have also been experimenting with a small amount of vermiculite in the hole surrounding the seed as it germinates as i found the worms/grubs that eats the seeds dont travel into it. i suspect that yours, like mine are being eaten by grubs.

Will see how the most recent sowing goes then try warm rather than boiling. The Amz
