Finally somewhere to talk about music. :)

I've been listening to a lot of experimental electronic stuff lately.

From the Bassment - from Melbourne based label Hell's Bassment doing downtempo and drum n bass kinda stuff, some good experimental stuff yet still pretty groove based and usual old time signitures.

I couldn't find the labels site but here's where you can get it. Synaesthesia Records

Nymphomatriarch - Awesome breakcore stuff, pretty hard but with some nice dark ambient to break it up, lots of what I thought was samples of porn videos, later I find out it was a couple who wrote the album while touring and recorded themselves fucking for the samples. Label's Website

So much more I could write about but I'll leave it for now.

prier is in the house. Nymphomatriarch sound interesting. they are on my to get list.

im listening to phillip glass i think.

the tag is "Steve Reich - Dominic Frasca / Electric Guitar Phase"

im not sure what that means but it may help you find it.

loops which are slightly out of phase and shift into different patterns. pretty groovy.

hello

phasing is a great compositional techniques created by steve reich

i am a huge steve reich fan.

one of my favourite minimalist composers.

philip glass is great as well

anyone listened to In C by terry Rileygreat piece of music and can be played by any instruments, what a great concept.

anyway back to phasing.

steve reich was heavily influeced bu african drumming and the rhythms used. he evern studied in africa where he learnt about the drumming techniques used.

anyway he developed this techniques called phasing and his first peice using this tek was called clapping music (if my memory is correct)

the way it works is like hag mentioned. the rhythmic patterns are slowly placed out of phase with each other creating an rythimic polyphony that is constantly being changed however still keeping the orginal motive.

confused yet??

it goes like this....

1= a clap (crotchet/quater note)

_ = silience (crotchet rest)

2= two claps in the space of 1 (quaver/eigth note)

main motive migth be this

11_2_1_221

so the phase would go like this:

11_2_1_221 (all instruments play this and at random instruments progress through the phases, repeating as many times as the performer likes)

1_2_1_2211

_2_1_22111

2_1_22111_

_1_22111_2

1_22111_2_

_22111_2_1

22111_2_1_

2111_2_1_2

111_2_1_22

11_2_1_221 (back to orginal motive)

(this isnt steve reichs music just created it to try and illustrate phasing)

not sure if this makes sense or not but phasing is great fun to play with other people and is great to hear.

I can't help myself, I love talking about music. :P

Something I picked up a couple of weeks ago was a cd called 'Blu Tribunl', it's an experimental remix cd put together by three guys, Akufen, Freeform & The Rip Off Artist. It's all remixes of blues tracks, as the name sorta suggests. There's somer really glitched out stuff and some reall funky stuff, and every remix is pretty different. Deffinately worth checking out if you're into your experimental.

Label's Website if you're interested.

diamanda galas has been getting a listen lately, as well as fuzzion's album (not psy, not electro, not slut funk, not tech, but damn good :))

also DJ scotch egg, and "the nam shub of enki + the kikki ill" has been getting some major playing on my headphones.

oh, and as soon as i got some more money, the adaat compilation will be worn out too soon as well :)

"the nam shub of enki

I heard their album 'Fuckpiece' I think it was called, and loved it especially the last track. I've got to hunt down some more of there stuff, anyone know where to buy their cds?

Hm, I've been listening to Venetian Snare's album "winter in the belly of a snake', this has been my favourite albums for about the last nine months. V.S.'s is one half of Nymphomatriarch which I mentioned earlier.

Also listening to Boards of Canada's album Geogadi which is just awesome.

I'm always hearing about people getting great scores from JB discount bins, but when ever I go through the discounts I turn up with nothing. Which JB has the good discount bins? or am I just unlucky?

I loved "winter in the belly..." too but his album "Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett" actually floored me . A truly beautiful album. Apparently he went to vienna and was inspired by Mozart and other classical composers. He even learnt to play violin and trumpet for the release....or so the story goes.

I also love electronic music, mostly IDM style electronic but also get into some instrumental electronified hip-hop.

Other recent albums that I just can't get enough of include:

Conrad Newholmes - Peppermint Styles (Couchblip!)

Landau - The Epic Compromise (m3rck)

Shadow Huntaz - Corrupt Data INSTRUMENTALS (skam)

Julien Neto - Le Fumeur De Ciel (TYPE)

And of course Chris Clarks new one on Warp Throttle Furniture....

But don't get me started, music is my obsession. I also make music, run a record label and a music distribution company (which I am currently in the process of closing down) - all in my spare time. In fact we were the distributors for the Blu Tribunal release Prier mentioned above. Sorry for the shameless plug but if you are interested in electronic music, please checkout our online store. As I said we are closing up shop so everything is on special and nearly all releases have 30 second audio samples of all tracks for you to get an idea. I thought since this thread mentioned electronic music several times. No-one would be offended. I've only ever done it all for love of music.

I'm relatively new to this forum but since finding it, i now read it everyday. My two major obsessions have always been mushrooms and music and they are particularly good together.

Awesome site :worship::worship:

There's so many cd's I want to buy, damn I wish I had money to spend at the moment. When will the site be closed? and if you don't mind me asking why are you closing?

Back to the music, I've been listening to 'Six Records Breaks Your Heart Again', which funnily enough is available at limpet's site for a mear $8, I feel ripped off I payed something like $30 for my copy.

mentions on the site that you guys are also a label.

you make music then limpet?

as for music i downloaded a torrent with every single verve recording of charlie parker. even the out takes. good music to draw to or ponder to.

that said the song of the week has to be a psy track "bliss - final cut" from a compilation called "ultimate energy.

its my running music at the moment. nothing like trancing out to music while running.

any recommendations for other running music?

dragonforce is also great. listen to that and its like you are running into battle.

Yeah, check Botanika's music thread, there's a link in there somewhere. Limpet's stuff is awesome. :worship:

As for running music, I'm a bit of a fan of tech-trance. I don't know much but I really enjoy X-dream, their album Iriitant is what I'd be listening to if I went for a run.

Trying to keep this thread alive, I've been loving A Perfect Circles stuff lately. Also been listening to some old Tool cds too, Tool would have to be my favourite rock band by far.

the new tool album shouldn't be too far off now, and an oz tour is expected in august! very exciting stuff...

did anyone in Vic catch talvin singh play last week?? would've been quite a cool show

lately i've been listening to a few different things. endulging in some 70's psychedelia with ash ra tempel, brainticket, amol duul II, cluster, cosmic jokers etc. also loving Zu at the moment, kinda remind me of a more structured john zorn-esque jazz. sun city girls and ruins also deserve mentions.

the only newer band i've been getting into recently is Valley of the Giants, their selftitled album. it's a colaboration of a few bands, broken social scene, godspeed you black emperor, do make say think, and some others. it is a beautiful album as you might expect.

like to make a big deal out of the first listens of special albums. the new tool album is definately not one to listen to via mp3 as they download.

i have been downlaoding a lot of psy recently from http://www.filemp3.org/browse.php

hit and miss. some psy is awesome. some is half assed.

been revisiting an old album -

psydrop - fantasy seeds

great album. "fear and loathing" is highlight for me

i think its time to give godspeed you black emperor another listen. cheers for reminding me ajna. im a fan of their stuff eh. quite a journey.

thought it might be a good idea to start-up this thread again for people to post any gigs/doofs/perfomances/whatever that are coming up that would be of interest to this community. last weekend i caught Sigur Ros at the Tivoli which was a very trippy show, anyone else catch them this time round?

the first tour i'd like to bring to people's attention is Wolfmother's upcoming, but not neccessarily for the headliner. the support band is Dungen who i think are absolutely fantastic. they are a Swedish psychedelic folk/rock group who IMHO should be headlining this tour, beautiful music. but no doubt they will atleast blow away a few Wolfmother fans. dates are:

Thu 13 July - Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide

Sat 15 July - Festival Hall, Melbourne

Sun 16 July - Challenge Stadium, Perth

Thu 20 July - Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

Sat 22 July - The River Stage, Brisbane

If you wish to buy/download an album i recommend their latest "Ta Det Lungt"

Just thought I'd mention this band called Xiu Xiu... yeah I know it won't be everybody's cup of tea, but amongst the insanity (and some stuff which is just plain fucked up) is some sheer brilliance. I saw them last thursday night for their first Aus tour, a small gig in Sydney, and it was an amazing show. I just walked out stunned, the small gig made it a really intimate and just blew me away.

Some good tracks to check out are - Hives Hives, I Broke Up, Muppet Face and I Luv The Valley OH!.

In terms of best albums - Fabulous Muscles, Knife Play, A Promise and the new La Foret isn't bad either.

Been listening to a lot of Pinback recently... especially their album "Blue Screen Life"... a masterpiece of mutantly intricated southern californian pop!

http://www.pinback.com

Also, Sufjan Steven's "Come on feel the illionoise", I have been finding very relevant recently!

did someone mention wolfmother? I find it hard to take any band seriously who are from australia yet feel the need to stand on stage and talk with an american accent.... Kinda sad...

As for electronic stuff - Autechre are still doing it for me... Didnt mind the new BOC album either - some people told me it was shit so i was quite surprised when i found out otherwise.

I wouldn't say it's shit, It's no 'music has the right to children', but a great album all the same.

I've got to get some stuff by Autechre to see what all the fuss is about, they seem to be the most talked about glitch act.

oh it doesn't even stop there, bm. dont get me started on wolfmother! :P

i'll be hanging around to see what a year of international touring has done for their live performance, but Dungen is the reason i'll be paying $50 for this show. Amazing band, it's ironic to have them opening for wolfmother

will check out dungen.

i am fairly anti wolfmother.

recent listenings have included "hallucinogen - the lone deranger album" have heard tracks off it but not the whole thing till recently. cant belive that was made in 1997. still amazing beats. i mean changing tempos, come on. sure its harder to mix but it makes for great music that really gets you going.

also been into a lot of indian classical. ali akbar khan, ravi shankar, amjad ali khan and Dr L. Subramanian are the most notable acts. the skill of these musicians is absolutely amazing.

cranked a bit of charlie parker as well. found a torrent with every one of his recordings with verve. making my way through it.

miles davis is okay but i have never really gotten into him. i mean i can appreciate his talent but he never hits any of my sweet spots. perhaps im not listening to the right tracks.

in my book charlie parker and dizzy gillespie pwn miles davis.

oh also into this arabic singer called fairuz. i think she is lebanese born. not sure. really good stuff. i dont have much exposure to arabic music but this stuff has been great.

Talfan Ayyash

Dak Khilkeh

Sallimleh Alayh

Oudak Rannan

are fantastic

plus Oudak Rannan has all these sounds at the end that sound very close to gunshots. like they are ending the song by firing their ak-47s in the air. classic. a little controversial in these days. i would like to know what the lyrics for that song mean.

I've never got right into Miles either - but I have to admit his classic album 'kind of blue' is still excellent and a must for anyones collection. It has Bill Evans and John Coltrane playing with him.

A great solo piano jazz album if anyones interested, is Keith Jarrets 'Koln concert'. The first few tracks are incredible. Keith's an acquired taste though and this is the only album I really like of his.

I even gave some early Sabbath a re-run the other day cranking out 'Supernaut' - awesome riffs.

technowise I have little access to decent new music but I've downloaded a bunch of DJ Trinity stuff lately. Its a little dated and but hours of free trance mp3. You can find his mixes on the site Baidu.com or Sogou.com.

I also listened to 'Tabula rasa' the other night, a weird mix of indian and bluesgrass styles featuring Bela Fleck.

Cheers
