Optimystic Posted April 5, 2013 @ Jox, mine died a couple days before I was gonna graft... When I sew this next batch of seed I guess I'll plant all my peres cuttingsright away and then just graft all the freaks at once... the good thing is I have more seeds and I've had freaks in every sew so far...More in the Validus X LJ than the others but theres still one of the LJ crosses I haven't sewn yet... but anyways Im glad someone got one of them going! That very nice to see

tizocAu Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Ok so ill admit im new to new species and stuff. But can someone fill me in on "melted wax" I mentioned it once in a different forum is it a certain clone or is it something that just happens when it gets too hot.like whats the difference between a semi monstrous and a melted wax Edited April 9, 2013 by tizoc4u
Kykeion Posted April 9, 2013 tizoc4u, the melted wax is a semi-monstrose* bridgesii, with the long and short jointed "penis plants" representing fully monstrose forms. Melted wax may have originally referred to a specific clone, but I'm sure folks out there have used the term to describe any semi-monstrose specimen. *I have seen folks argue that it is monstrose, and not semi-monstrose. By my understanding the "semi" prefix simply indicates that it is a monstrose form which retains columnar growth vs. being relatively short and bushy like the penis forms. I'm not sure if the melted wax is a stable monstrose grower, or if it occasionally reverts to normal growth like "Kai" and a few of the other named clones. Scientician Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Not sure if this really fits here? This is a shot of one of my crested pineapples. technically a brom but cool nonetheless. Edited April 9, 2013 by muskrat
bogfrog Posted April 9, 2013 But can someone fill me in on "melted wax" I mentioned it once in a different forum is it a certain clone or is it something that just happens when it gets too hot Hehe i wish all cacti began melting when it gets too hot!!! As far as i know its a genetic trait, which appears in a few different clones. Melted wax bridgesii is the most commonly seen, yet 'melted wax' seems to also be a descriptive term... IE i have a pachanoi monstrose which is beginning to get the 'melted wax' look..
bogfrog Posted April 10, 2013 Nice plant Muskrat. I was very ethusiastic when i realised that leafy plants can turn crested too, i once came across a crested hedge
Jox Posted April 11, 2013 There are some cool plants in this thread , This little loph koehresii is going to look pretty cool as it gets bigger, I got the seed from zelly's variegated L.koehresii so I must thank him . I had a few germinate but this one looked different right from the start, so I grafted it on the 2/1/13, here are some pic from when I first did the graft. These photos were taken this morning, the camera doesn't really do it justice. It is lime green almost yellow. Here is a photo of it next to another loph graft that was done at the same time, these might help show the colour. Thanks for looking, I look forward to seeing more of your freaks . Cheers jox

zelly Posted April 11, 2013 This particular freak is a grafted Cintia knizei that produced a really weird head, which I first thought was some form of crest. Eventually the flat area has grown out into two heads which curve down & under the flat area. last pic shows a normal head with flower

zelly Posted April 12, 2013 This one got some kind of bug or insect, which is what probably caused the mutation. Naturally I didnt notice the bug until it had worked its magic, so all I could do was take pics and wait it out. I tend not to molly-coddle my plants, with them its survival of the fittest. Yikes! an infestation! what should I do.... well lookie there, a double header she sure wants to flower! self fertile is a good thing...
Hellonasty Posted April 16, 2013 This particular freak is a grafted Cintia knizei that produced a really weird head, which I first thought was some form of crest. cintiaDSC_0062.jpg Eventually the flat area has grown out into two heads which curve down & under the flat area. last pic shows a normal head with flower I have a grafted Cintia that did exactly the same thing. I think it is a result of the stock pushing growth too fast and results in splitting and strange/ugly growth.
