rahli Posted June 25, 2008 Heres my two entries. They are both far exceeding my intial expectations of them (they are still alive). This is the one that got mauled at the start of the comp by a monster grasshopper. It is now 4.5cm and my runner up. The same grasshopper (unless there were two in the area) mauled my Ariocarpus fissuratus graft. This is what it looks like now And here is my biggest at 5cm. watertrade Posted June 29, 2008 Nice one Rahli, they look great. I like the look of the last pic - with the double fold thing. are they just plain ol' L williamsii?
rahli Posted June 29, 2008 Thanks watertrade, yeah their getting along ok. Just glad they made it through the monsoon. The seed is Lophophora williamsii 'Paila' from Coahuila in Mexico and was purchased from the SAB shop. It was the closest seed type location I could find to the giant 15cm specimens found at El Oso mentioned in the Lophophora Kaktusy 2005 edition. I was Hoping it would make it more likely to grow bigger quicker to gain an advantage in the competition. Not sure why it has the double fold in it though I do think it is pretty cool. My runner up is also starting to do it as well. I'm hoping it will continue to produce more of the double horizontal notches. I'd like to get a little more added to the girth before the end of the comp next month but might get flowers instead so I'm going to try cross pollinating them both, then regraft them both to scops when they have finished fruiting and stopped growing on the peres stock. Cheers rahli

blangschpeer Posted July 7, 2008 Seems my graft likes to listen to you watertrade, it's responded with a bud that should open in the next day or 2, I'll post a photo when it does. Please feel free to give my other lophs a stern talking to any time
watertrade Posted July 7, 2008 (edited) Please feel free to give my other lophs a stern talking to any time you will have to send them to me first.. ;) Edited July 7, 2008 by watertrade
blangschpeer Posted July 13, 2008 (edited) well it finally flowered on saturday. So far it's the biggest flowerbud any of my lophs have put out at just over an inch. Home stretch now people, I'm guessing mine won't win but I'm just happy it's powering along Edited July 15, 2008 by blangschpeer
rahli Posted July 15, 2008 Flower opened today. If you look closely on the bottom right of the closed flower bud you can see another immature bud. I've self pollinated the flower and have saved some pollen to cross pollinate my other entry which is now producing flower buds aswell. Only a few day's to go. Good luck everyone
rahli Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) My second entrant, the one with the horizontal notches, started flowering yesterday. I managed to save some pollen from the other entrant and cross pollenated the flower today. Saved some pollen from this flower to cross pollenate the other entry as it has two more flower buds on it that look like they will flower at the same time. Hoping to get plenty of seed. gilligan Posted July 20, 2008 Damn, Shruman, well done... Rahli, nice flowers... I will hopefully submit my pics in the morning, between getting home from work and flying out to Borneo... Bugger, a hard life. Nowhere near as speccy as you guys, one of mine actually seemed to be munting before i came to work this swing, so had to chop it off the pere (left some stem of the pere to verify it) and put it outside to try to bring it back - started going squishy . Oh well, two left for the comp. We'll see how it goes. I only just changed my fluoro tubes, i think they lost their usefulness, cos i had a bit of a stunting period... Bring on the next comp. I'll be ready
misteek Posted July 20, 2008 nice work everyone. love seeing all those pics. will we be able to do something other than lophs for the next comp as i would really love to participate. maybe arios?

watertrade Posted August 8, 2008 (edited) Teo, are you going to call the winners of the Oct 2007 SAB grafting comp? and the winner is..... drum roll please.... well maracas roll... Edited August 8, 2008 by watertrade
Ace Posted August 9, 2008 Bob-Bob - that specimen looks gorgeous!! Absolutely perfect rib structure and gorgeous koehresii-style flowers. Was it marked L. koehresii or another species? Looks to be sort of williamsii-like in the ribs (very typical of a seed grown one at least), but the flowers are screaming pure koehresii. Very interesting! gilligan Posted August 12, 2008 OK, sorry about the lateness, i didn't win for sure, but i had to get the pics up... 2 entries... as i said before, i think the lights were old and stunted them, next comp i am going to get some in and outside, and compare rates... The third was off the pere (was the soft one, figured i'd leave it out of the comp... it will be my next pach graft material, methinks) Still, was good to do, and for my first attempts, i was happy with them... Bring on the next round...

Upon comparing the two through photos they appear to be very similar though. Nice work Gilligan, they are some healthy looking plants. I you want maximum growth I would cut off all those extra growing tips on your peres. Looking forward to the next round.
gilligan Posted August 12, 2008 Nice work Gilligan, they are some healthy looking plants. I you want maximum growth I would cut off all those extra growing tips on your peres. That's what i thought, but it seems to have kicked up a notch since that growth began... I think i had minimal leaves on the stock, so wanted to get a few more on before i kill the new growth. Cheers The rest of my grafts are all straight stem peres - i only had these old woody ones for the first comp...
diiv Posted August 14, 2008 (edited) Greetings everyone, although it is too late I am showing you what joy this competition gave to me.three beautiful plants.Thank you for that as you also had a great part in this.I was just looking over the whole competition and came to the conclusion that if I had entered my final post before 20th that I would have been the runner up.This really means a lot to me because every day I learn new stuff and realize that am just a beginner and see how much new stuff there is to learn to improve your skills and stick with your love. This competition made me realize that, though a beginner I have had some good success and that I am not contributing as much as I should have, especially when compared on how much I have received so I promise to improve on that also. So thnx again for everything and enjoy this pictures because they are your success also. I have just now on uploading realized how stoned we were when we were taking these so forgive weird angles and lousy measurement . This is the whole lot. This is the one that pupped in the beginning into two heads and none of them was something like dominante one,I read 5,9 cm. This is the one with the big head and a smaller head that doesnt show on this pic, this is the measurement of the head, I read 4,5 cm. This is the same but with the little head, I read 5,3cm. This is caespitoza that was grafted a bit later, when the peres tower didnt work for me. So thats that for this competition, looking forward to the next one. Peace.
