I've a couple that produce seed pods but I've never seen the damn flowers!I wish I could tell you, (I'd like to know myself). But the nursery I got it from just sold it as a melocactus sp. I think they sometimes get batches of seedlings from cactus growers but they don't seem to keep correct labels on their cactus and succulents. It will be my first trichocereus to flower this year so I am going to be looking for pollen donors for it if anyone can help out! Ideally I'd like to use scopulicola or cordobensis pollen if possible. But definitely open to other pollen. (I probably should measure it I suppose)As for age i couldn't tell you. I saved it from a garden that was being razed to make way for a pool about 2 years ago. My guess it at least 15 years and probably more like 20-25. zed240 Posted November 7, 2014 Share Posted November 7, 2014 Pollinated the third flower of the year to open on my pasacana. Used some pollen from a scopulicola that Zelly kindly sent me. Fingers crossed!Found the start of a couple of tiny buds on my peruvianus. A very nice surprise. And a double pic to compare the buds forming on one of my Yowie. There are more than 36 buds on this one column. Will be interesting to see how many, (if any), go all the way. Pics are 3.5 weeks apart.And lastly, a large 1metre mid cut of Yowie that's starting to bud near the top of the cut but weirdly there's also 2 buds starting to form on the pup! Craziness!Also got a decent sized bud on one of my Psycho0's, a few buds on a couple of PC pachanoi and I'm pretty sure a tiny bit of fuzz is starting on my scop too. Most of the San Pedro Flowers are very alike but have minor differences, like the color of the wool, the length of the tube, and and and don´t get me started. Without measuring the flowers and comparing with descriptions, it´s basically of very little value. Only speaking of the classical San Pedros btw, which are very alike. Since there are so many natural Hybrids and local Varieties with very similar but slightly different features, i doubt that you can look at a flower and say "yep, that´s Peruvianus Ancash or anything like that. Even if you know a certain variety very well, it can be totally different with a different seedgrown Plant from the same Pod. You can differentiate the classic Species like Bridgesii, Scop and Peruvanus/Pachanoi with inspecting them very closely (and comparing lenghts of their organs) but that´s about it. The fact that every flower can look differently, makes this even more problematic. There are a couple of Trichocereus Flower Experts worldwide. Like really, maybe a couple. And of course, there are certain species that can be easily recognized... But it´s not the norm. Many look very similar and it´s oftenly not certain whether the differences are because it´s just a underfertilized specimen or maybe an Ugly One and so on. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I hoped someone would write something like that...I was thinking that sometimes, generally speaking, macroscopic characteristics of body can be more helpfull in IDing, than flower or seeds or [[spores and microscopy]] in mushrooms, like for example in Haworthias which have more or less very similar or identical flowers or the azurescens cyanescens serbica complex in Psilocybes (microscopic characteristics are pretty similar, but macroscopy and DNA prove them to be different species) 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
