Berengar Posted March 23, 2014 Share Posted March 23, 2014 Hello everyone!Recently I started wondering, why aren't T. terscheckii hybrids more popular? On paper, it seems like a potentially perfect combination, large, thick, beautiful, fast growing, cold tolerant columnars! But the seeds are practically impossible to find. Why is the reason for that? Do they hybridize easily with other species and produce normal number of seeds? Or are people generally more interested in various bridgesii and pachanoi hybrids? Flowering-size T. terscheckii specimens are also probably more rare in collections. Is that the reason?I'm sure lots of folks would love them, especially people like me who's winters are just a bit to wet to keep faster growing Trichocereus species outside year round without complications. I would implore anyone with flowering specimens of terscheckii and other Trichocereus to give hybridization a shot, and sell or trade the seeds to the community! And grafting them doesn't work nearly as well as with other species.That's exactly the point of hybridization, making them much faster growing, and at least some of the offsprings would have the cold resistant properties of T. terscheckii.There were some Psych0Xterscheckii seeds available at some point, those plants look simply amazing and have the growth rate of Psycho0! AZS Posted March 23, 2014 Share Posted March 23, 2014 In Phoenix, my Terscheckii seedlings more than double in size each year for the first several years then put on at least 6 inches per year and sprout arms readily. Terscheckii can reach over 10 meters in height and easily weigh over 15 tons when fully grown. They can easily handle temps down below -7C / 20FIf more people continued to plant them ( perhaps for the next guys) the argument over how fast they grow wouldn't be an issue. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Berengar Posted March 23, 2014 Author Share Posted March 23, 2014 AZS, I definitely plan to grow them, I just ordered some T. terscheckii, T. taquimbalensis and T. werdermannianus, but I would also like to play around with more variety while I'm waiting on those to be ready to be planted in the ground! AZS Posted March 23, 2014 Share Posted March 23, 2014 These plants need full sun after about 3 years old to do their best - most people baby them way too much!My "pure" Terscheckii start to take off vertically at about 3 years - they grow all year long here, just slow down in winter.Hybrids - grow them and find out!
