migraineur Posted December 9, 2010 Hey, Does anyone know how much a pure bred rottweiler would cost? I tried to find prices on the internet but the Australian breeders that I found do not list prices.
random Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) imo you'd be best off contacting the rottweiler club in your state they have a puppy list of available pups for sale , do not even think about getting a pup from parents that have not had their hips and elbows x-rayed as you could end up with massive vet bills and heartache down the line if your dog develops dysplasia. For a quality temperament and physically sound dog you'd be looking at around the $1200 mark but spending more up front will save you vet bills in the future! I have been looking at the Rottweiler Club in W.A. Do you have your own pure bred dogs or something?

I love dogs and I want a companion but I also want a good guard dog that'll make some junkie think twice before he jumps my fence. Rottweilers are also in the list of top 10 smartest dogs. There are others that I'd choose also like the cane corso but I think I'd have to get one from South Australia and they're already expensive enough without having to spend more on importation fees. Have you ever owned and trained a dog before? I only ask because if you're wanting a dog capable of guarding your property without causing hassles, I'd think you'd either want ("have to" IMHO) to have the dog trained correctly from a young age or hire someone to train it for you. migraineur Posted December 11, 2010 Yeah, I've had a few but not for a few years now. I have grown up with dogs and a few other animals. I was shattered when they died but it was from old age and it happens. It is not a decision I am making easily and I have been researching about various breeds, their temperaments, requirements and so on. I have also found a dog training club nearby. Getting a slightly older dog would be good due to the fact that they should be house trained already and might have some other training. I might be able to find a good dog that needs rescuing too as there are plenty of dogs that need good homes.
Zen Peddler Posted December 11, 2010 If you want a dog that kicks arse but obeys orders and is fanatically faithful then you cant go passed your average Queensland red heeler. My mate got one recently and its a guard dog and then some... Its actually pretty scary LOL. Wouldnt hurt him or his family but woe befall the idiot that tries to sneak in his back door. Hypervigilent too.
Zen Peddler Posted December 11, 2010 Shelter dogs can have issues. Many have been poorly socialised - some have zero socialisation and they are often locked in a small backyard with zero walks and then they get out and the arsehole owner never looks for them. Our kelpie is from a shelter and she is pretty good, but ive seen a few dogs from shelters that are totally fucked up. problem with dogs is that there is a period in their puppy life when socialisation is mandatory. If they miss that it can be an uphill battle to get them to display the right signals to other dogs and to deal normally with outside stimuli like cars and kids, etc.
incognito Posted December 11, 2010 we had a stumpy tail blue heeler when I was an infant. A beautiful, motherly dog. ALways kept an eye on us kids when we where playing. We lived in Minto, in the ghetto. We where the only people on our street who had not been broken into. Gentlest dog with the family, but as Zen said, woe be to anyone that tried getting in our yard, without the permission of one of my parents. Having said that, I love rotties. Well i actually love all dogs, asides from chihuahas and silky terriers. Im not a fan of pittys in general, howver ive only had had experience with pittys owned by fuckwits who have trained and encouraged them to be vicious. I always felt they where compensating for their own inability to defend themselves, or that they had really small penises. Ive no doubt that pittys and amstaffs, cane corso's could be loving, trustworthy family dogs given the right training and environment. I believe pittys and amstaffs are used extensively as 'pets as therapy' dogs in America? u will never see a fucking chihuaha as a 'pets as therapy' dog. Slybacon Posted December 12, 2010 http://www.guarddogtraining.com.au/html/rottweiler.html $2000 to $20K!!!!! Fucken hell. They don't come cheap. These things sound like they are rolling out for a Hip Hop commercial. IMO, You want a guard dog that is intimidating but never bites, I'd hate to have to put my dog down just cause some junky was stealing my VCR.
AndyAmine. Posted December 12, 2010 If you think about getting a German Sheppard Dog let me know and I can hit you up with some good breeders in your state. I think I know of one that breeds with a family gaurd dog temp in particular
migraineur Posted December 12, 2010 Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about shelter dogs and psychological issues due to neglect. However, I was looking at rescue/shelter dogs that were handed in by their owners for reasons like moving or no time to commit to the dog because of young children etc. I would love to have a red heeler again too. One of the things that'll be hard to stop them doing is nipping at people's feet because they're working dogs.
random Posted March 17, 2011 Did you ever get your puppy? I don't own any guarding breeds anymore unfortunately but it's times like these I wish I did.

ethnodude Posted March 18, 2011 Does anyone know how much a pure bred rottweiler would cost? The price of your whole back yard ripped to shreds. When I read this post I thought it was another disaster thread.
migraineur Posted March 19, 2011 Yeah, I'm still looking. Any info would be much appreciated. I don't mind if a dog causes a bit of wear and tear. They tend to grow out of it provided you don't let them get bored. I have plenty of parks in my area and the river is a short walk away too. What do you guys think of pet insurance?
random Posted March 19, 2011 Pet insurance is good idea and can save you alot of money. Only issue with it is you still have to pay any huge vet bills upfront, but you get re-imbursed later. If you can pm me what state you are in, I can give you some contact numbers. Sorry I would have done so sooner but totally forgot to check back on this thread when you initially posted.
