Diving accident

Recommended Posts

I wasnt going to post this video, i thought perhaps its not really with the morals of the forum and may possibly offend some of our members.

It went viral a year or so ago and i first saw it on facebook. So i suppose if facebook can handle it so can friends here.

Possibly alot of you have seen it and cast your own judgement on the situation. To those who have not once again......

THIS IS VERY GRAPHIC DONT VIEW IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED. IT CONTAINS A SCENE OF A VIOLENT DIVING ACCIDENT.

http://robert-lindsay.blogspot.com/2009/10/face-split-diving-accident-video.html?zx=de0f879eea1a2c0a

After watching this my own feelings are males in particular participate in very risky behavior whilst young men. Myself i consider lucky to have made it, i too have fallen down a waterfall, nearly drowned twice, car accidents and near misses, also dangerous jumps like the unfortunate young man in the video.

From another perspective as a mature 35 year old male, now when i talk openly with my parents at times regarding my risk taking i can see my mother go white with fear as to what may have been. I wish i could shake young me and tell him to settle down, its just not worth it, this video effects me deeply because i have survived life by bare cm's. Besides fleeting memories of risk taking glory, you get older a see a bigger picture of self preservation and realise the risk taking of youth isnt worth it.

If only 1 person see's this video and changes their own view of dangerous practices then it is worth it. Also finally as a parent i can see the value in letting your kids have freedom but as a parent this wants me to be overprotective of my child and that can only be a good thing. The loss of a child is devestating and only a parent knows how that feels.

Sincerest condolences to the family in the video for your loss.

dude, that clip is pretty fuct up.

but probably still worth seeing. i often consider it to be a miracle for any male to reach adulthood with all limbs and senses intact. the amount of shit we set fire to, blow up, chop, cut, throw and smash blink.gif

Finally as a parent i can see the value in letting your kids have freedom but as a parent this wants me to be overprotective of my child and that can only be a good thing.

i disagree. raise your kids in an overprotective environment and they'll probably develop an anxiety disorder. no, seriously.

life involves a number of risks. however, some risks are worth taking and yes, also worth dying for. so long as you're fully cognisant of the risks, but value engaging in the risk enough to be willing to accept the consequences, then i don't see a problem.

but i also recognise that the adolescent brain is less able to consider the consequences of its actions. so i think it's more complicated than being very relaxed or overprotective. perhaps supporting risk taking in a supervised environment is a good compromise?

fautus - you just hit the nail on the head there mate. You just described one aspect of initiation,

"perhaps supporting risk taking in a supervised environment is a good compromise?"

My son of 11 years was heading off to the skate park the other day.As he walked out the door i was nagging him about wearing his helmet(cause you know how un- cool it is to wear a helmet) and was saying about what could happen if he had an accident...... He wasn't gone long ,which is unlike him, so as soon as he came in the door i knew something was up. A Friend of his had escorted him home, he had blood over half his face and kept asking "what happened". Yep, face plant off a six foot box (Skate park ramp) whilst being on a mountain bike...No helmet. 5 hours at the hospital as he had concussion . Luckily he only grazed half of his face and a black eye (nothing broken) . The moral to this story is... If you think of bad things that could happen, they will happen. Law of attraction. By the way, i am hesitant to watch the video. A bit of an idea of what happens would be helpful.I don't want to have night mares you know.

Edit ;Just realized this is in Bitches and gripes , How did i get here?! Mine is a story of luck.

Don't watch it, Amazonian. I sort of wish I didn't. A guy dives off a pier and lands head first on a ledge below. Not pretty.

Thanks for the Heads up . I gathered by the bold warning in the beginning of the thread that it would be bad. So i wont watch it. I was thinking a while ago about recording all the teen car accidents that are on the news and then play it back to my kids when they got their license. ... then i learned about positive thinking (Law of attraction). I will believe they are safe and tell them when they are going out that i will see them when they get home .

re: positive thinking, I remember my mum once said more emphatically than other times "be careful on yer drive now ya hear?" and i said "oh but of course mother, I'm ALWAYS careful when i drive" I then proceeded to drive like a hoon and not 5 minutes after leaving, I got in a small accident with the dirt embankment... I blame her for jinxing me... or being really prescient and voicing her knowledge of the future as a concern.

I was in another accident where a friend of mine said he knew it would happen but didn't want to jinx the situation, it was destined to happen, a "damned if I do and damned if I don't" situation, in his mind if he had said something it would've stressed the driver and prompted the accident anyway and having said nothing he allowed it to happen. Free-will and destiny are trippy.

As for risk taking, I agree with faustus. Controlled environment, to allow for a bit of out of control. A safe space to test the limits of your capabilities. I think of things like learning the art of drifting a car, not at all dangerous if you're on an isolated track. It epitomises keeping control of something that is sliding out of control, Drifting is just awesome in every way!

A friend of mine's mum told her son to drive safely when he was going driving, one night he was telling her to piss of cause it annoyed him that she said it every time he went out and that he will be fine.

Sure enough that night, driving with a girl he plummeted into a tree/fence. Killing the girl on impact and putting him in hospital.

Every single time I leave the house, my mum tells me to drive safe and i thank her :)

alot of talk about car crashes lately. Weird isn't it that we will get into a ton of steel moving at 100k an hour and not think twice about it really - but our fears of failure or rejection or whatever can take over and corrode our lives. that was 2c worth from me

peace

If that was me I pray like hell I die on impact....

I come across one a couple of days back by accident and this poor woman had a truck skid over her back legs and grind them off..she was just laying their on her stomach and every now and again she would look back at what once were her legs..

I went rock diving about 6 months ago. Hadn't done it since i was 16. I wasn't very keen on it but i had an enthusiastic friend put the hard pressure on, made feel like i was 16 again so i just went with it. It was heaps of fun and made me feel young and free again but after watching this I'll probably refrain from taking such risks again. To much to do yet with my face before i split it in two!!!!

yeah car crashes do change the way you think about things, I know nearly killing myself and 4 other forum members (who were my closest friends at the time) opend my eyes right up

Unfortunatly it only took a year or so before I was taking risks on the road again when being lazy like taking corners too fast or braking late, must say though my behaviour while driving with passangers is still like it was after the accident.

well ThunderIdeal, not sure about it. When i was watching the video, i was like "no way that guy is still alive". But i somewhere read about him and if i remember right, there was written he survived. But this could also be a hoax. Hutch is right...If i were him i´d rather be dead than to look like a hammer smashed vagina for the rest of my painful life. bye Eg

I plused you santiago (which I don't do often) but not for the video (obviously) but for the genuine concern I could feel coming from your words in regards to others safety.

I know how you feel about falling down a waterfall....one of (and I stress only one) of the many stupid things I have done. I thought I was going to die but I remember as I hit every smooth rock on the way down saying in my head over and over "don't pass out"...I was scared shitless I would drown when I got to the bottom..luckily I survived it with badly bruised soles of my feet, arse, elbows and back but nothing touched my head. I was sick as a dog for two days after...shock is a pretty powerful thing. I also had a car crash off the Toowoomba range where I was lucky I didn't have my seatbelt on. I was pissed as a fart in my courier van with a ride on mower in the back going way too fast round a bend and I swear the tyres were starting to come away from the rims...I found a little gap between a guard rail and the embankment and took it. I hit the culvert which launched me into the air and over the range.. luckily it threw me out of my seat and somehow I ended up in the back with the ride on mower. The van landed on the roof exactly where I should have been sitting and snapped the seat headrest off...then rolled a half a dozen times before the lantana pulled it up. Again another lucky break cause nobody saw me go off the side and the lantana camouflaged me well.

I broke a few ribs and wear a nasty scar from a gash on my right forearm as I couldn't go to the hospital as I was pissed so I just patched myself up. When my mom saw the van she passed out on the spot. My next one I was running late for work in my trusty little datsun 180b wagon and I was doing about 85 in a 60 zone when all of a sudden a semi trailer was in front of me (he run a stop sign)...I panicked and braced for impact and in doing so I know I put my foot down harder on the accelerater....turns out it was lucky I did as I would have went under the tray and most likely have decapitated myself...hitting the rear wheels full on saved my life IMO...I did break my wrist and it looked like the S bend on a toilet but with the bones pushing out and blood squirting out in time with my heart beat...I remember the truck driver walking up casually, "Ya right mate" Fuck did I give him a mouthful :ana:

Then I fell down a river bank(pissed)...suddenly my left foot is facing the wrong way and I'm tumbling into the Condamine river in winter and at least 2 hours from anyone and on the wrong side of our camp( we didn't have mobile phones then)...(Setting hand lines for the night)...Took my mate 2 hours to get into Miles but when he pulls into the fist pub in town the SES are having their monthly meeting...how lucky...Finding me was tougher though because as I said I was on the wrong side of the river and about 2 klms from our camp so it was a bit hit and miss. When they did get there one of them stood on me as they were pissed. But the joy and relief when they gave me some stuff to suck on.. :worship:

So take care people....I am real lucky to still be here...I could bore you with a couple more close calls but I think you get my point...human bodies break :P

I am the result of doing some really stupid things and my body aches accordingly....I think I have an angel on my shoulder as I should be dead....

I'm amazed that both my little brother and myself have never suffered any serious injury.

My older brother though, managed to snap his shin skiing down the wrong side of a mountain though. Then he re-broke it walking. Walking along a path at work. Remember, you're not Nietzche. You can be made weaker by what doesn't kill you.

^^^ Further down the page it explains the probability why the ER clip is the diving accident and not a shotgun accident.

Also, how awfully terrifying that the boy is still alive in the ER.
