watertrade Posted November 3, 2007 Any chance of purchaing a smaller bronze loph WT?smaller coz i the winner earns it, i'd love to have one for keeps...... Hi jasemateau I haven’t really thought about selling them because there is heaps of work in making and finishing them and could be a little pricey if I try to recover my costs - but saying that, when I make the final lot I will have some left over - it is my intension to make 10 and keep them in their raw form until needed - I will make one for Teo, one for me and one for the comp. - then finish the others as needed, for example if I had made them earlier I would give one to the EGA raffle this year. Anyway, I'm sure we can work something out. Just have to make them first. Maybe check back with me towards the end of the comp. Cheers

gilligan Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) anyway, back on the topic lads... My entries so far... I have had 4 successful out of 5, and there are still 2 in the humidity chamber... photos of a couple attached... I still have more seedlings.. am waiting on pere to come good... The first pic, i tried root and top, only the top took. Oh well... I've got another that the head and root took on the same plant, will endeavour to get that one up in a little while... blangschpeer Posted November 14, 2007 Looks like my hopes of a loph tree have been dashed, 4 of the 5 seedlings on that one either dried up or got eaten by mould (damn exams diverting attention!) but if only one takes it still has a chance. Another 4 have definately taken and some look like they're starting to put on some weight. That leaves 2 that could go either way at this stage, I've increased the humidity and given them a bit extra water in the soil so hopefully thats all they need. Worst case scenario, I've got 4 for the comp with more to come... Goodluck people
teonanacatl Posted November 14, 2007 I got about 70% and some are now about 7mm will take some photos after exams.
gilligan Posted November 16, 2007 OK... Some of my grafts now... The pics should be better than the last effort... The small ones on the peres are in the comp, (there are 3 others still pretty small), and the other two grafts are just a loph and TBM on pach....
shruman Posted November 19, 2007 A quick pic of my entry About 16 mm now & bearing child. Only done 4 grafts 2 tops to bottoms but have been realy trying to prop my peres which is starting to work out now & this is by far the best, I have a top I done last week showing signs of new growth but it wo'nt be up for the comp I'm sure. Hellonasty Posted November 19, 2007 Shruman, Nice cacti mate props. Your light setup is almost exactly the same as mine, I find the compact fluros work quite well. How many watts are each of yours ? Thanks

shruman Posted November 19, 2007 "Nice cacti mate props. Your light setup is almost exactly the same as mine, I find the compact fluros work quite well. How many watts are each of yours ?" Thanks, 4 20 w & one 15 w, it works well enough but if I was making it again I would use batons. "mine are nothing like this... infact... they seem to have hardly grown..... any advice (mine are under natural light though, on windowsill.)" Temp is the main thing I reckon, my lights are on 18 hrs a day & its never under 30 degrees when they are on, u have to keep the water up to ur peres at those temps but. Nip the sideshoots of ur peres as soon a s u see them. Oh & luck ;)
Hellonasty Posted November 19, 2007 (edited) Thanks, 4 20 w & one 15 w, it works well enough but if I was making it again I would use batons. Shruman, I have 3 x 48w and they work great. You can buy 48w compact fluros for about 25bucks have a look around and as you know they last forever. XipeTotec, Mate fluros have worked wonders for me in terms of growth and health of my grafts. Longer light periods stimulate growth as far as I can tel. Edited November 19, 2007 by Hellonasty
Kenny Blister Posted December 12, 2007 Will there be another comp starting in January running concurrently with this one? Have missed the boat on this one, but wanted to do some grafting in my holidays, just wondering if I should wait for a second comp.

shruman Posted December 18, 2007 (edited) A new picie Shes now 25mm with 3 pups Is it cheating to remove any pups? How clean are these games?, are growth/flower inducing hormones allowed? How many people are in this? Edited December 18, 2007 by shruman
diiv Posted December 21, 2007 Hi to you all, I have finally borrowed a camera a took a couple of shots of my contestents.I have grafted three instead of one as i was supposed to and it turned out to be my luck. The seedling on my peres tower isnt doing anything. It just stands on it not growing and not drying. The problem was a period of about a month when my cacti werent receiving any artificial light and the climate over here is turning very cold. The whole tower ------------------------------- The top. The seedlings on other two peres, that are three or four times smaller, are growing pretty pretty good. One of them is growing in two directions so I dont know if I should regraft one of them or can I just measure them as one??Please respond to this.Any way here they are in couple of angles. And in the end just a one question. Can I regraft the big one and is it against the rules??The biggest is abou 16mm wide. Iwish all of you good luck with growing and also with this competition. Peace
watertrade Posted January 4, 2008 (edited) I tried starting a new topic just for the trophy I'm making with updates as not to take away from what is important about this topic -- the grafting. anyway I couldn't get all my previous posts and pics to work in a new thread so i will post here until I can figure it out or be bothered reposting. here are some updates - the following pics are the progress pics of the final waxes. I found with the test pieces the Loph wool (fluffy bits) didn't come out - the silicone was absorbed into the fluff and left dimples where there should have been tufts - you will see the little spikey bits of cane that will be filed down almost flat, polished and textured on the final peices - they are sticking out quite far to allow the bronze to flow into the mold. note the 2nd smaller cacti - another donation from Teo - I'm happy to say both survived the abuse. Micromegas Posted January 9, 2008 I have no idea how you did that WT, but those bronze lophies are awesome!
Ace Posted January 9, 2008 Seriously awesome work WT! I really hope you expect a helping hand when it comes time to offload them prizes If I can help, please let me know (I'm only a few mins away). I have more grafts that you might want to use for mouldings (some of which are nice and big), not sure if you are past that stage or not. I'd be more than happy to lend a hand at any stage, so just let me know. I certainly want to learn how you got so damn creative with this stuff!
gilligan Posted January 13, 2008 (edited) Ok... finally my entries again... grin. The first two pics are the entries, the third pic is my pach loph will caes grafts, and the fourth is the total of my seedling grafts to date - 100% success, but the bases that i grafted didn't sprout further yet due to no areoles left on it i just scarred it in the hope of helping it put on a new sprout. we'll see... The peres are pretty rough, they were my first attempts at grafting full stop, so my next lot will be the classical straight up single stem Edited January 13, 2008 by gilligan
blangschpeer Posted January 22, 2008 Thought I'd post a pic of how my entry is going. It's the only one that managed to pull through out of the 13 grafts I tried for the comp All I'll say is damn whiteflies and cheap exploding fluros! Anyway, I now have 2 10w fluros in my makeshift set up and everythings responding quite well My graft is now about 11mm and fattening up visibly more and more every day. and here's a pic of my bodgy but effective setup, it's an old fishtank with white rollerblind material stuck to the sides
Ace Posted January 22, 2008 Looking great guys. Blangschpeer, I'd recommend putting a reflective lid on your setup - a huge amount of light is getting wasted out the top there (unless you took off the lid for the pic). And damn, one in 13 to take? Thats some disheartening results. I;d strongly suggest putting a coke bottle over your grafts to keep up humidity, reduce pest damage and protect from exploding lights Also, be very careful with water around them lights if they have a tendency to blow... Could be a disasterous event waiting to happen if there are pots/puddles of water about the place.
