Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth

Biography | ISBN 0807059099 | 1993 Year | PDF | 1.9 Mb | 269 Pages

Gandhi’s nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

Lysosomes (Medical Intelligence Unit)

Lysosomes are membrane-surrounded organelles which are present in all animal cells. The importance of this organelle is underlined by an increasing number of human diseases, which are associated with an impaired function of the lysosomal compartment.

This book summarizes the current state-of-the art knowledge about this unique organelle. It addresses the biogenesis of this compartment, the transport of lysosomal proteins, the role of the lysosomal membrane in lysosomal stability and transport, the function of lysosomal proteases and hydrolases, lysosomal storage disorders, and new concepts on how to treat these diseases. In addition to these these classical topics, new insights into lysosomal functions are covered by chapters dealing with specialized lysosomes involved in bone resorption and plasma membrane repair, the lysosomal transciptome, and proteome and the emerging role of lysosomes in special forms of autophagy.

This book will provide readers with a comprehensive overview into how this fascinating organelle works and how research in the field is developing.

The Link Between Inflammation and Cancer: Wounds that do not heal

(Cancer Treatment and Research)

1 Edition | 254 Pages

The transcription factor NF-kB has long been known to play a central role in the immune system by regulating the expression of key genes. Moreover, activation of this transcription factor helps a wide variety of cell types survive damage induced by pro-apoptotic stimuli. Owing to its critical role in the regulation of pro-inflammatory genes, NF-kB has long been regarded as a promising target for the discovery of anti-inflammatory drugs. More recently, NF-kB has emerged as a major culprit in a variety of human cancers mainly due to its ability to protect transformed cells from apoptosis. This finding should not have come as a surprise since there exists a link between inflammation and cancer which was already suggested by Galen and later demonstrated by Virchow. This link, of crucial importance for the design of novel strategies for cancer treatment, is the topic of this book.

Cytokines and Cancer (Cancer Treatment and Research)

378 Pages

This book is a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on cytokines and cancer. Cytokines play a variety of roles in cancer, both as components of pathogenetic mechanisms, as well as agents used in the treatment of certain malignancies. To date, there has not been a book that covers both basic science and translational/clinical research in the field of cytokines in malignancies. This book is written by leading figures in the field of cytokine biology and cytokine therapeutics and is specifically focused on this subject. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on current developments in the basic science field. There is a particular emphasis on novel mechanisms of cytokine actions in malignant cells. The second part deals with translational and clinical research in the field, and many of the authors of these chapters were among the first to introduce several cytokines in the treatment of certain tumors. Collectively, the information provided in this book will be helpful to people in the medical field at several levels, including medical students, interns, residents, clinical and basic science researchers, as well as oncologists in practice.

The Constituents of Medicinal Plants: An Introduction to the Chemistry & Therapeutics of Herbal

Pages: 109

This book is an excellent introduction to the major classes of phytochemicals involved in the medicinal effects of plants. It is, however, very terse. Without some background in inorganic and organic chemistry, I doubt it would be very usable. More detail on the typical effects the different classes of phytochemicals would make it an even more useful book. Still, assuming you have some chemistry background, a very good introduction to the subject, particularly if combined with a text like The Natural History of Medicinal Plants, which fleshes out other basic issues.

Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine

228 pages

Now a producer at the New England Research Institutes, science writer Braun engagingly describes the chemistry, metabolism, physiological and behavioral effects, and reputed health benefits of the world's two most popular drugs: alcohol and caffeine. He seasons the book with references to history, folklore, and literature. (Did you know that Bach wrote a Coffee Cantata?) The treatment of controversial issues?such as the correlation between risk of heart disease and moderate wine consumption is balanced, and the science is sound. Whether the subject is the cause of hangovers or the effects of caffeine consumption on PMS, Braun has a knack for interpreting the findings of medical researchers and applying them to daily life. He also includes a postscript on the two years he spent researching the book and how it moderated his own alcohol and caffeine consumption. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

TNF-alpha Inhibitors (Milestones in Drug Therapy)

Product Details

Book Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel (30 June, 2006)

ISBN: 3764372486

Book author: Jeffrey M. Weinberg, Robin Buchholz

Book Description:

Over the last decade, the advent of biologic agents has greatly revolutionized therapeutic medicine in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and psoriasis. Elucidation of the complex web of cytokine network and the roles of these cytokines in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disorders provided one of the key catalysts for the advancement of targeted biologic therapy in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

TNF-alpha is known to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of many chronic inflammatory diseases. Elevated levels of TNF-alpha have been demonstrated in Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a role for TNF-alpha in their pathogenesis. Although TNF-alpha plays a critical role in the activation of innate and acquired immune responses, the persistence of the immune response and inappropriate production of TNF-alpha can produce pathological changes resulting from chronic inflammation and tissue damage.

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the development, pharmacology, efficacy, and safety of the currently available TNF-alpha inhibitors – etanercept, infliximab, and adalimumab. The most recent preclinical and clinical data is presented on this topic, which should be of interest to the preclinical researcher, the clinician, and the patient who wants to learn more about these therapies.

Glad you enjoy them Darklight :) I wish I could read as fast as I find good books

The biggest problem I have with pdf books is not being able to read them somewhere else. I don't have a palm pilot or anything and won't be able to get one for a while, but really once I've referenced a good text I'm better off reading it a few times away from the computer before I start work. Is there any technology you could recommend I aim for which would let me read these files in a more relaxed environment ( aside from printing them out? )

Still, assuming you have some chemistry background, a very good introduction to the subject, particularly if combined with a text like The Natural History of Medicinal Plants, which fleshes out other basic issues.

I don't have a chem background and believe me I've tried to get one. Still, I work with the knowledge in my own field and it's enough to keep me very busy ( and broke! ) Do you have a location for that last text?

Thanks again, eversomuch!

I'm with ya on the inconvenience of pdf books, I only prefer them for two reasons- two CD-Rs can hold enough books to fill a room and my literary tastes are obscure enough that the treeware copies tend to cost $200 a piece. The result is I only insist on stuff like the CRC and Merck Index be treeware, almost everything else I just read at the comp when I'm having coffee, eating, or simply have spare time so I havent really investigated portable options. (God I love being single, the extra time to read has probably done more to help my education than college did  ) As for that book, I havent run across it in pdf format yet - I will keep an eye out though :)

Synthesis and Characterization of Glycosides

3074 KB, Pages:352

This textbook discusses glycosides, which is an important area of sugar chemistry. Arias describes the general procedures commonly used for preparing a wide range of O-N- and C-glycosides, focusing on the preparation of the main glycosyl donors, and the coupling reaction conditions needed for the glycoside bond formation. Since characterization is also a very important topic to be treated, there is an introductory analysis about NMR spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction and mass spectra of glycosides.

Synthesis and Characterization of Glycosides contains the best known approaches for preparing the main types of glycosides in a short and comprehensive study. It also includes synthetic pathways of challenging glycosides known as antiviral or antineoplasic drugs, or synthetic substrates used for enzymatic detection including those used as substrates for detection of gene markers in plant biotechnology. Special attention is made on the structural characterization, providing the basic tools for the structural assignment through NMR, X-Ray and mass spectra techniques.

way to go journeyer, i'm gonna grab a lot of that when i figure out how to use rapidshare.

palm pilot sounds like a good idea, or a projector. i probably have one of the largest non-fiction ebook collections in history, but i hate to read on a computer screen.

searching emule or soulseek (or torrent sites, to a lesser extent) with terms like 'horticulture' and 'gardening' produces heaps of results, otherwise just search 'ebook' and start trawling. given time to prepare i could share some of mine on soulseek if anybody contacts me.

Description

Left in the Dark expounds the most radical reinterpretation of existing evidence from the disciplines of evolution, ecology, neurology, psychology, anthropology and other academic fields, whilst also placing the ancient ‘Ages of Mankind’ mythology and related traditions within a scientific context. These universal traditions were once the only version of history we had, they describe the onset and progression of a neurodegenerative condition that really has left us in the dark. Often considered no more than the imaginings of a primitive mind and easy to dismiss as mere myths, they are in fact a more accurate natural history of humankind than modern science has thus far recognised. The book outlines the origin and nature of a condition that eventually left us virtually blind to its existence. Evidence is cited that supports such a scenario. A means of definitively testing its validity is proposed and most importantly what can be done to treat the condition and prevent its occurrence. While this may seem a challenging prospect it promises amongst other things the restoration of phenomenal abilities, exceptional immune function and most importantly a greatly enhanced state of mind and well being only rarely glimpsed by a tiny minority.

The revised 2nd edition of 'Left in the Dark' with a foreword by Dr Dennis McKenna is now available.

A neurodegenerative theory, such as the one outlined in Left in the Dark, which proposes that the development of our brain has become seriously retarded would accurately predict a number of major psychological symptoms.

For example making sense of who or what we are or recognising the insanity of our day to day behaviour would be virtually impossible.

Furthermore such a theory would predict that even if there were overwhelming evidence to support such a scenario we would be slow to understand the context, specific nature and severity of our predicament, even if it were pointed out in laypersons language…
