Guest Mexicali Posted August 2, 2006 Aloe, Just letting people know that as of yesterday, ALL lophies were pulled OFF Ebay ALL AROUND THE WORLD. No more lophies on Ebay...for anyone! That's GOTTA suck for those collectors who want the plant. I have some left but am now very skeptical about selling them. So hold on to your lophies!!!!!!!!!! Torsten Posted August 2, 2006 Ebay is a private company and doesn't have to answer to anyone. They are also very american centric, so many of the cultural biases flow down from our big brother. Whether ebay bans things or not has no effect on the law itself. It is simply their business priority (to be a family oriented business). How about using one of the alternatives? Or how about selling them here?
naja naja Posted August 2, 2006 Yeah, I'm pretty sure you'll have no problem getting the prices ur looking for, selling them here. I beleive many of Loph's on e-bay have been purchaced by SAB members anywayz. Anywayz, they r advertised in ur blog, if people looked around abit.
transDiMenTional Posted August 2, 2006 Mexicali, I would be interested in making an offer on your loph except that the last 2 times ive organised to buy plants off you thru the corroboree you have not replied to my pms/emails. I ave bought numerous plants off you thru ebay and found you to be a great seller so I dont understand why you treat me (as a customer) like shit here. So yeah im reluctant to waste my time again. Dunno if I can indulge in the same level of anger, but yeah, Mex has lost my business too on this count. I'm sure the reason is that he has more customers than he can handle right now anyway, so he probably doesn't mind Personally I'm just as happy saving my loph money and giving it to darcy when herbalistics comes back
SaBReT00tH Posted August 3, 2006 (edited) Darcy is good, I bought lots of stuff from him about 2 months ago Edited August 3, 2006 by SaBReT00tH

jasemateau Posted August 4, 2006 only for you guys in germany evil man!!!! check out divine cactus in england they could probly help you out. plenty of goodies there. http://www.divinecactus.com/index.php oh panties!!!!!
Evil Genius Posted August 4, 2006 Hi Jasemateau, thank you for the link. The Only chance to get some very old plants for a reasonable price was ebay. In germany you had to pay about 50-100 Euro for an Loph with about 100 pups. These have been about 50 years old. That was such a good price. I have to repeat myself. Aarg, Goddamn! Birdman Posted August 12, 2006 This is not good news.My concern is that the beloved Loph vendors could now bump up their prices since a chunk of the competition is now gone.
Torsten Posted August 12, 2006 This is not good news.My concern is that the beloved Loph vendors could now bump up their pricessince a chunk of the competition is now gone. That doesn't make a lot of sense as ebay was generally considerably more expensive. Ebay availability did mean more plants on the market, but somehow I am sure the previous ebay plants will still find their way out there.
teonanacatl Posted August 12, 2006 (edited) That doesn't make a lot of sense as ebay was generally considerably more expensive. dunno what auctions you saw T but there was some real bargins on there. Most lophs went for under the price you sell them for, which is exxy compared to nonspecialised cactus sellers ie $5 for a 4cm one, must get back to that place :D So yeah exxy compared to nonspecialised dealers but cheaper or the same as specialised dealers. There's only one person selling them on ebay, which is mexicali and any prices of his I have seen over the last few months have always been higher than mine (dollar for size). We don't grow ANY Lophs due to the high theft rate, so we can only base our prices on what others charge anyway.
teonanacatl Posted August 12, 2006 no there was 4 or 5 selling them, i bought a few and they all had different bank names so unless mex is utilising different bank names........ I cant remember but wasnt your prices like $30-40 for a 3-4cm plant? i got a 4cm plant off ebay for $20. I got some plants of mexicali for cheaper then you sell them for equivalent size. Trust me i looked around and got the cheapest i could find. Only place cheaper is markets and non specialist cactus dealers but then they dont always have them. Urban has 3cm for $50. Bok2 Posted August 12, 2006 There is still lophs on there I came across some while doing a vague "plant" search. Give button cactus a go. I agree, I grew mine from seed and ever so slowly there getting larger. Theyre almost family I couldnt consume them.
Torsten Posted August 13, 2006 no there was 4 or 5 selling them, i bought a few and they all had different bank names so unless mex is utilising different bank names. May well be true for several months ago, but I was keeping a pretty close eye on it the last few months. Mex does have a few usernames, so maybe also different accounts. I cant remember but wasnt your prices like $30-40 for a 3-4cm plant? i got a 4cm plant off ebay for $20. Urban has 3cm for $50. There are always occasional bargains on ebay because they depends on who is bidding. My dad was selling a single species on there for 12 months and got anything between $3 and $160 for it (with a full spread in between). Totally unpredictable. Obviously a shop will never just sell at the lowest price obtained at an auction. Anyway, the most we charged was the last batch which we also paid a lot for. They were $35 for 35mm, but we only had about 15 of them. Before that (when we contract grew) we charged $25 for a 25mm and $20 for a 20mm.
teonanacatl Posted August 13, 2006 yeah thats true some do reach amazing prices so the seller probably has an average close to what you sell them for. Yeah still one up under button cactus.
teonanacatl Posted August 13, 2006 oh yeah mex why dont you jsut auction them here?
devance Posted August 13, 2006 Growing a mescaline plant for 6 years a threat? Nothing but a smoke and mirrors for alot more serious problems for the political world. -------------------------------------------------------------------- If they can't raise mescaline. They can always be soldiers saluting the the nationalistic flag. Its always protect the young as far as the polticals expression. War and nationism isn't protecting the young. The Nuke/warhead missle will prove that point. I would never use so, but who would?
Dodie Posted August 13, 2006 Because they take so long to grow it would be very hard to sacrifice em. But its one of those things on my distant future to do lists, So many more alkaloids than other cacti, I think theres around 60...cant exactly remember the number... teonanacatl Posted August 13, 2006 I would gladly eat some lophs of the right age, but the thing is i would grow them so that it was a sustainable practice as opposed to buying some lophs and eating them straight away. ie might harvest 100heads per year if i had 1000 plants, thus each head would be 10 years old+. Maturin Posted August 13, 2006 We don't grow ANY Lophs due to the high theft rate, so we can only base our prices on what others charge anyway. Curious, do you mean to say people where stealing from your nursery?!? Those evil bastards!
Torsten Posted August 13, 2006 Curious, do you mean to say people where stealing from your nursery?!? Those evil bastards! Not MY nursery, but almost everyone else's. Most cactus nurseries don't sell Lophs not because of their reputation, but because the dmaage caused by thieves does not make up for the possible profits from their sale. For example, Arizona (sydney) had over $2000 damage in sliced solarweave, broken safety panels, and gates in just one weekend and it wasn't the first time. Thieves made off with about 50 plants too, at various ages. They never sold Lophs again after that. Lot's of small growers have had the same problems. The worst thing is the collateral damage caused by break ins and careless removal. We've known a few growers over the years and most either keep their Loph collection separate and secret, or they simply don't bother with them at all.
