Mercado Sonora, Mexico City. (Image heavy)

I saw similar 'witchcraft markets' in La Paz, Bolivia. I was a bit less aware of all things ethno back then, and didn't really see anything that stood out, as much as I looked. I did notice things such as dried llama foetuses to put under your house for good luck though! I'll see if I can dig out the photos and scan them.

    books wanted

Amazon is a great place to start, especially for hard to get titles. Works out reasonably cheap if you're ordering a few at a time. Otherwise your larger local bookshop (Borders, Dymocks etc) can often order what you're after.

A mate of mine has two of these and loves them.http://www.cheapvaporizer.com/

    String theory ?

Yep, second that entirely, it doesn't contain a single equation. Also worth reading the first parts to brush up on relativity, or to have it explained if you're unfamiliar with it in the first instance. Great book.

    brain teaser!

From memory, no, but I'm not going to try and do a mathematical proof on why it is so! (This is a straight out maths question yeah?)
  6. Generally speaking, tricking you into sending them money in the promise of receiving a lot more. Nowadays, there are people fighting back and baiting the scammers, with often amusing results. See http://www.419eater.com/html/419faq.htm for a general description of the scam and http://www.419eater.com/html/letters.htm for some baits.

    Licorice experience that suprised...

Slightly off-topic, but I was given a mint flavoured licorice root lolly the other day (think natural tic-tac) and I can safely say it was one of the worst things I've had the pleasure of tasting. I love licorice, but this was bad!

    brain teaser!

I couldn't find an easy way, though there may be one. I think I got lucky cos I intially substituted 5 for 'e' and the rest came out after a bit of cursing and swearing. Bascially, all you're doing is substituting a letter for a number value.

    R.I.P Dimebag Darrell

Pretty shocking and sad stuff. 'Walk' was one of my favourite songs about 10 years ago.. RIP.

    Who's gonna ?

I think it's a great idea. Something interesting, but not overly out there like the erowid shirts. Shame I'm not a visually creative type..

    Are mushies legal?

I'm assuming you're talking about psilocybin/psilocin containing mushrooms. A big no to all of the above, in Australia at least. Quite illegal.
  12. I dont think that superconscious death necessarily equates to the physical death that a human goes through. Suicide in a physical stae is final. Death in the superconscious dream state is made with the assumption that you will return to a lower state of awareness after dying and waking up. This shouldn't change if you translate the superconscious state to reality..

what's the deal with commonwealth land?

This may well be an old wives tale, but I've always been of the opinion that Commonwealth land falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal police. I'd say if the Feds made the effort to nab you for whatever you were doing 'wrong' then the punishment would be somewhat more severe. I dunno, this is just hearsay from when I used to go to parties in disused army bunkers (on army/commonwealth land)

I think the lucid dreaming state works the most effectively.

    Kratom?

Would you _really_ want to take it every day? Surely that could lead into a pattern of dependence which could be ultimately undesirable? But it makes work easier..It's an interesting question and one I ask after witnessing coca use in Bolivia. The use of coca leaves in Bolivia has a long long history which doesn't need to be explained here. When I was travelling through the poorer mining towns, some people there are practically incapable of working without coca, the women would chew the leaves all day, adding a leaf to the quid in ther mouth is as natural an action as taking a breath of air, and is done just about as frequenty. The men would refuse to enter the mines without coca leaves. Within the cultural context, there is perhaps nothing wrong with this per se. The situation for these people is vastly different to our own, and coca is part of their way of life and helps them get through their day. However, there is a psychological and probably physical dependence on the coca alcaloids. On one hand I easily came to terms with the dependent coca use and am completely sympathetic to the people - why not use what you can to make your day more enjoyable, painless and so on? That's what we all want, right? I'd want to be doing the same...One the other hand I saw people probably disfunctional without the leaves. Where is the balance drawn? Now I'm not actually trying to debate the worth of coca, it is a special plant and has many, many benefits across a very wide spectrum. The same applies to Kratom. I guess the question is more dependent use vs. benefits. I think.

    R.I.P. John Peel

Yeah, it's quite sad. He has done so much for music as we know it, it'll be hard for anyone to exert the same influences again I think.

    mealy bugs

So the plants are uprooted and the roots exposed throughout winter? They cope OK with that?

Oh wow, that would be great! PM sent. That puzzle took me a while and quite a bit of paper to work out. I'm sure there was an easier way though, once I started I couldn't stop, hehe.

  21. Whether it's valid or not, this interested me enought to look it up.. I think this is the article in question: http://www.newscientist.com/hottopics/quan...p?id=ns99992209 for the physicists among us
  22. quote: Dont forget the widely viewed film "Altered States" was based around his work.[/QB]Ahhh. I saw that last week, and I've got to say it was pretty bad! The film had so much potential, but as much as I tried to like it I couldn't bring myself to.
  23. From a friend.. I figured trying here for them, as I'm sure some people might be genuinely interested, as well being able to represent the topic intelligently.. PM me if interested. -- I'm putting together a show on drugs for SBS's Insight program. All points on the spectrum will be participating, from the "tough on drugs" end to the "just say yes" end. The tricky thing for me is finding the unembarrassed "just say yes" crowd. I am looking for functional users or former functional users - these are people using drugs in an informed, conscious and "non-chaotic" way, as the jargon says. So it's people who take the occasional E and still manage to go to work, or people who used to take Es and still got through law degrees with flying colours. Or people take or used to take drugs and are now married with 2.5 children and no regrets. You know who you are! Post smokers, speed freaks etc are also welcome. We are focusing on pot and party drugs but I'll take anyone who is prepared to talk frankly about their drug experiences on national TV. Basically, we want a debate that includes the voices of those who think drugs aren't necessarily bad, although of course everyone admits there are risks involved. We want to look especially at whether taboos about drugs, or the line between licit and illicit drugs, is blurring for people in their teens to thirties. Of course, if anyone has an opposing view and a story to tell, I'd be very interested in hearing it, but it's been easy enough to find people with cautionary tales and very difficult to find current and former shameless users. If you know anyone who might be interested in adding their perspective to this discussion, pass the email on to them. In case you haven't seen it, Insight is a forum-style show, featuring a 50-min in-studio discussion on a single topic, with one or two filmed stories dropped in. I need people to be part of the forum and I'm also looking for characters for the film piece. The show is presented by Jenny Brockie.

Seeking sources for show on drugs

Some more info: The show is Sydney based, though they may fly people if required (I'd imagine if your contribution was to be particularly valuable!) Filming in Sydney on Sept 13th. PM me you'd like to take part, or get further info, and I'll forward it on. Also, I have nothing to do with the whole thing short of knowing the researcher.. Spaced: I think a good exploration of legal substances would almost be necessary to do the show justice..
