    Damiana Harvest Question

not sure if there's much in the stems, but damiana doesn't mind a trim

    Mimosa growing advice

Maybe timing is the key yeah. I trimmed it about 2 weeks ago, so early autumn
  4. I've had good success with boiling up old cigarette butts and pouring the disgusting tea over some seedlings that were getting eaten to death by a wrath-of-god locust swarm. They didn't touch them after that. YMMV tho becuase some bugs seem to loooove tobacco

    Mimosa growing advice

Not sure this is going to help but i found mimosa h to be a strange plant. I bought 2 and eventually potted them up into 8" pots. They grew quick and strong, but one was always healthier than the other, with one being prone to closing its leaves more often than the other, and having quite a bit of yellow, even though both were in identical conditions as far as I could tell. What i did to one, i did to the other. Both plants have thorns that get bigger the higher they are. There's almost no thorns at the base, but on higher branches the thorns get bigger. On the sick plant, the upper thorns were massive compared to the healthy one. One day I figured screw it and hacked the sick plant back to almost nothing, leaving no leaves whatsoever, thinking it would either kill it or make it awesome, well, it made it awesome. Within days it was shooting new growth and now it is healthy and bushy, and the issue with the thorns seems to have stopped. I'm not sure if i've capped the maxiumum height of the plant due to the harsh cropping tho, but it certainly seemed to enjoy it. On the issue of leaning over, I had this problem as well, but I attributed it to the constant winds it was getting it its old location, as well as the clitoria and morning glory vine i had growing next to it pulling it down. As far as cuttings go, I had 3 that struck from some random cuttings that I stuck in perlite. Not sure what i did right. I'm pretty much just rambling now. I'll stop

    Grow diary: Incarvillea sinensis

I too bought both the white and pink strain. I got both to germinate, but not so many pink, I think I ended up with 9 white and 3 pink in the end - that's not counting germination but overall survival rate. I potted them up and now I have maybe 4 decent plants left, 1 actually decent. Not sure what colour as they haven't flowered yet. the way i got them to germinate was to put the seed packets in a fridge for about a month, then just sowed them like normal. When the sprouts do pop up, it's important to use only mist to water them, as a regular shower spray knocks the delicate sprouts to the ground and they never recover.

The warnings here against poppy seed tea are well warranted. People have died from taking the same dosage time after time and then BAM! The problem is that there are no acutal alkaloids in the seed itself, but there are traces due to contact and handling, which can vary greatly. On a slightly other note, I've heard that the poppy seeds you buy in the spices section of the supermarket are both viable and opiate-producing. My guess is that they are a byproduct of the Tasmanian industry.

    Incarvillateine- stronger analgesic than morphine

Good to know. Those temps are close to what we've been getting too, but spring is close. I think i'll still coddle my little babies for a little while yet

Interesting. I'm glad to see they can take full sun, but you guys are both in south NSW. The temps there are cooler than the gold coast where I am, but still you must have some pretty hot days. Do they seem to suffer at all when it's hot. There's "full sun" and there's "full sun". It doesn't get stupidly warm here often, but I'm still going to coddle my 1 pot of seedlings until they are strong enough to repot and separate. I won't put them in the hothouse yet (or at all) because of the humidity in there. and also, LOL TUFKAd00d, i'm pretty sure i've picked out "weeds" that looked like that. I've probably thrown out a buttload of incarvillea without even knowing. dammit.

the previous batch all died. they never recovered from being knocked down. I tried again, this time a little differently 1) I had the seeds (still in the packet) in the fridge for about a month 2) I planted them and placed them in the shade under a tiger grass clump. 3) I sprayed the tiger grass periodically (avoiding the i.sinensis seeds) in an attempt to take advantage of evaporative cooling as the wind blew through the seeds were sown on 5th of aug and sprouted on the 15'th I water the seeds once in the morning and once at lunchtime with a light mist, and i re-wet the tiger grass 3 or 4 times a day The weather here is reasonably warm and the sprouts so far are doing well in their shady protected spot. This is making me fairly confident that if I can get the plants established, they will do well in a cool shaded position.

I finally got some seeds to germinate The successful batch was sowed and placed in the fridge on 30/6/2015 The pot was removed from the fridge about a week later The seeds germinated about 2 weeks after this Luckily we had a cold snap just after it was pulled from the fridge and it's still pretty chilly. Not sure how well they will fare when the weather heats up. I've got them in a cool shadehouse of course. Sorry for the poor quality of the pic. The seedlings are very thin and weak, and i accidentally knocked them down this morning when i watered them, so it's mist only from now on. I'm thinking about making a double-brick evaporative cooler to keep temps down, so hopefully I will be able to germinate seeds without having to wait for the weather. The seeds that were successful were the White variety from Chilterns

    Erythroxylum Novogranatense?

I found a source for the live plant fairly easily. The leaves are apparently pretty nasty to chew, but - "The roots of E. australe contain Dihydroxytropacocaine and Methylecgonidine which are likely to be active." Has anyone had any experience with the roots of this plant?

Incarvellia sinensis should do ok. native to mountain tops it likes full sun, lots of water (but well draining) and cold dry conditions
