tips for dealing with variegated cacti

From what I've seen sunlight helps show off variegation but I don't think it will make a cactus grow more variegated areas, just make them more pronounced. Could be genetics that cause it to be either light or heavily variegated. I have seen some cacti that produce hardly any variegation and then can produce amazing vibrant yellows on other parts so not really sure here.. I have seen that if you can get a variegated cactus to flower that it will increase the % of variegated seedlings produced. Similar to the monstrose % increase when breeding with mutants.
  2. I have had trichos survive low 20s (F) while completely dormant and had no issues, mind you the temps only dipped that low for a small amount of time at night. This was TBMs, reg bridgesii, PC pach and a few others. I have also had the same PC pachs that survived those low 20s take tip damage after the weather warmed up and they started growing then it dipped back down to just below freezing and they got damage. So I believe there are many factors as others have pointed out.
  3. for some reason all your links try to go through researchrepublic, had to go and type in the links myself but awesome stuff. this is all right up my alley

Succulent ED - Huernia Going Flaccid

I think I encountered a similar problem, happened during the peak heat the past few weeks with the really intense sun. Some of the older growth just looked shriveled and almost burnt so I tossed it into a shadier area and have been withholding water, seems to be doing about the same/better so I think I will just cut all the new healthy crests and start some new plants. Good luck dox

    New Shade Structure 30%

I went out and looked at my pots and it looks like a plastic type difference, my black pots from the hardware store are nice and thick/flexible while the other plastic pots (white/green/orange) seem to be thinner with the white feeling the hardest meaning probably the most brittle... So is it a color thing or a polymer thing?

What did you do to your cacti today?

Finally got some more rocks to put down on my bed to help keep dirt down/reduce weeds/reflect light/keep in moisture Noticed my variegated crest is going dichotomous so 2 crested growth points Found this sexy little beast at work (Echinopsis deserticola if you can't read the tag) While watering, I found what appear to be seed pods of some kind in my pereskiopsis pot. They almost resemble those little sticky burs but they were almost attached to the dirt/wood and seem to have seeds inside them.. Does anyone know what these might be?? This pot was in the greenhouse at work for a while but no idea what they are from. the seeds on the left side of the razor and a few of the pod clusters

    New Shade Structure 30%

I don't have experience with my pots breaking down yet, but why would white pots break down faster than black? I would think that black absorbing more light/energy and getting hotter would degrade them faster than a white pot reflecting a lot of light?

    New Shade Structure 30%

Nice shade structure! I think he just means if you were to add a layer of wood or rocks it would keep moisture from evaporating as quickly if you want to keep something a little more wet or if things dry out faster than daily. I mulch some of my smaller pots with turface for decorative purposes but I suppose it helps hold a little extra moisture in the soil. I usually water just about every day when its 100+

What did you do to your cacti today?

That graft looks fine, just make sure there's nice uniform pressure as others have said so it stays joined when it dries. I am pretty sure that Lophocereus Schotti should pup even without an aerole but keep us updated!

What did you do to your cacti today?

So is that what taxidermists are? An attempt to kill and preserve at the same time? ;)

    Show off your freaks

I have this TBMC, had a large side section that I removed before I gave it to my dad. It started showing new growth recently and put on a new crested section as well as a regular TBM pup it seems. Excited to see what it will do in the future. Thought about cutting it off but will leave it for now

What is the best way to Trim a cactus?

Probably tie the top off before cutting similar to trimming tree branches. I like the katana idea

What did you do to your cacti today?

Had been away on vacation and came home to some stuff I had received while I was away, was quite nice. The friend who took care of my plants did an okay job.. I lost a few things to rot, some stuff I caught right as it was going bad. Had a lot of rain while I was gone, trying to salvage a this Kimnach cutting at the moment.. pretty gross... I also grabbed a couple new things today at the shop. Ortegocactus Macdougallii Pelecyphora aselliformis - the tag is not my writing lol TBM clone-B Building a seedling prop box/shelf soon to house all the varieties of seeds I have at the moment

What is the best way to Trim a cactus?

Something like a bread knife is what we use at the nursery to take cuttings and trim dead stuff off just about anything. It has small serrated teeth that are super sharp to help cut through bread without smushin it so it's perfect for getting through the various layers and is quite thin. If you don't have this or want to get one the above method works great too

    Cactus Forms

variegata - lacking chlorophyll some different terminology I have seen for spine length, color, appearance etc but not really familiar with them all and not sure if they change based on type of cactus? Here's a few I can remember off the top of my head... nudum- no spines longispinus - long spines albispinus - white spines rubispinus - red spines

First Graft/Trying to save variegated plant

If you do attempt to regraft I would agree with Philo and trim down the edges of the stock so it pulls away less as it dries and less chances of pupping from the stock later. At least you still have a decent amount of cactus to work with, make sure everything is sterile if you decide to cut again. What conditions have you been giving it while trying to callous/root? I have had some problems but it was because they were outside in the ambient humidity which helped them rot even though the substrate was completely dry. Had problems like Philo and grafted a bunch of 'healthy' tissue on multiple grafts to save the cactus and they all eventually turned to rot. Not sure if it was just really bad off or if the humidity was too high but I hope your cactus pulls through!
  19. When I am removing leaves and creating a pointed tip for impale grafts I will sometimes get the aerole and the leaf together. A few have rooted and produced very skinny and slow growing shoots after lots of time just sitting in the bottom of the pot. Never had just the leaf do anything as hostilis mentioned.

    Any idea what this is?

Looks like a hybrid? definitely not PC pachanoi, I like it. Do you plan on crossing it with anything since it's flowering?

    Grafts -Photos & Updates

In my experience, scions turn dark from stress of light and no longer having a root system. They usually grow right out of it but the bottoms will stay dark, it's nothing to be concerned about.
