Both you gentalmen have very beautiful specimens. I get the zebra thing a bit in my semi shaded garden as well. Here is a couple of ozzie pc pups from the bottom of a loph graft... One pup was dichotomous.

Decreased rot vulnerability is not the main reason. A proper draining mix and correct watering achieve that. The point is increased fine root growth and faster above ground growth.

Took some pics of a few plants that almost died in a move...thought a few of these wouldn't make it. Damage is from sunburn after being boxed up. The last of the four I just thought was looking nice This last one is a tubercle graft from a really nice ariocarpus that started to rot after bad sunburn. All attempted tubercle grafts died, I held on to them though hoping I might get some growth later on..10 months later a few heads look to be forming

crystal kaleidoscope Rather then looking at glitter and shinny things, it splits your reality into kaleidoscope like images This is a kinda crappy pic i took pointing the camera down the crystal kaleidoscope and at my morning dare, its a little blurry but you get the idea

Looks like zelly's crosses are well represented in this thread. After having great success growing my first pack of seeds, which were zelly's BBBxValidus, I dropped a few more packs of his gear tonight. to encourage more fine root growth, add pumice & not perlite. as for lowering the risk of rot, have you considered limiting the watering cycle? are your growing conditions the same as kada's or other people, who may be forced to grow cacti in highly humid/tropical environments?

Nice plant! I would leave it myself, and experiment with this technique on plants you dont mind losing first.

personally i just take small steps with seedlings ill start by cutting holes in the lid once they are starting to show spines, a week later i the double the holes, another week later ill take off the lid after a month of no lid inside i move them outside to shady covered area for months, i try and introduce 3 inch seedlings to full sun over winter so they have some time to toughen up before the summer arrives.

I kind of think it must be environmental. I've noticed the striping on a few different plants of mine. Fields pach seems to do it a lot. Regardless, your zebra is a great looking plant, Philo. This Fields Pach gets lots of shade from early afternoon onward. This Fields pach is in full sun and you can still see it, just not as pronounced.
