Yes, it certainly was lonely last night.

I was concerned when this site was down last night and looked up the EBA records. It looks like the domain expired over the weekend and was only updated yesterday, thus there are some changes that are yet to propogate through the

internet. This makes sense because I know some people could see it still, when I couldn't. I guess it may or may not work for the next 48 hours depending on how your ISP's route to the domain, well that's what I reckon, could be wrong tho!

Yes all the ethnobotany sites (Lyceaum, Spirtplants, Shaman Australias, Enthnobotany Aus.) seemed to have problems at the same time. Most are working now so I am happy.

For some reason I often can't access EBA from uni, which is annoying because my email is @EBA and I don't have a phone line at my new house yet.

Sometimes it works fine but usually it says "Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.ethnobotany-australia.net".

Major Bummer!

Im waiting on a few PMs too. Any peoples connected with EBA give an approximation of when the site will be bobbing up again? (Wasnt accessible as of 1230 hours 17-3-03)

It's still down, but looks like it may be back soon..

I have no connection with EBA, just hypothesising, but if you do a lookup based on the registered name servers for the domain, then go to the returned IP address, you get a message saying "It will take 2-3 days from the time your domain was set up on our system for it to start working fully."

So yeah, still looks like a DNS propogation issue..

Hi Guys!!! (I really should come here more often!... hell I should visit my own forums more often too hehe)

I just discovered that my domain expired on the 12th of march.

After registering it I very sensibly changed my contact email address to '[email protected]' *grin* which I haven't checked in months and months, but if it HAD... I wouldn't have got the expiry notice because the domain in that email address would have ceased to exist.

I just purchased another 5 years. (*ouch* so poor atm)...

so sorry about that. it should be up and running again in another day or two...

until then - enjoy SAB twice as much *grin*

just wondering if we could do anything to raise money for this sort of thing.

i know we all apreciate eccles and torstens efforts, maybe we can show it in a more practical way, esp if eccles is short of cash due to this sudden expenditure.

suggestions?

How about an ethnobotany picture calendar? I dont know how feasible it would be as you'd have to sell a fair few to cover the costs.. but it could work. I know I'd buy one. :)

Maybe Eccles and Torsten could each respectively set up a PayPal donation accounts? I'd happily donate, and it is minimum effort from both site owners and community.

The calendar is a great idea though, we did a similar for our faculty social group at uni years back, and it wasn't too expensive to get them done. The problem was though getting it organised, then marking the calendar up enough to cover costs, and realise a profit. You also need to sell them all for it to be successful.

there's been talk of a calender before.

also, torsten mentioned a disc of the sab site.

this seems an interesting idea, selections from or 'best of' eba and/or sab.

wow thanks for all the support guys :)

Something like that would be fantastic actually. Esp since I have just moved into my own place and things are very tight atm (haven't even paid my uni fees yet! were due on the 4th of feb :P )...

But if I put a Paypal 'donate' button on the site, it would be really good because anyone who *doesn't* already have a paypal account, if they just sign up and put me as their referrer I automatically get $5 from paypal! which would mean that people didn't want to actually make a donation could still make that contribution without it costing them.

What about t-shirts? I reckon they could be more viable than a calendar, although I was shown a nude calander that was made by the postgrad students in the school of chemistry to raise funds... (they took all the pics themselves, of themselves - some are awesome, esp the one that had them all standing on, next to etc giant chem equiptment on a bench. it looked SO real. like they really were mini people on a lab bench :)

But yeah - he told me that they cost $10 each and were selling them for $15... so you really would need to sell all of them to make any money back. that could be a little risky...

but what about t-shirts? I am sure that some good designs could be come up with... if people were interested in buying them... ?

oh P.S. basically I have to wait perhaps another day for the re-registration to go through... then I have to update the nameservers on the registrars site (so that other DNS servers can find it) and that will take a day or two to propogate...

I'm so sorry for the amount of time it's been down for! but what with all the things that have been happening in my life lately (including moving!) I just haven't really had the time I'd like to spend on the site.

I'd also like to add more features etc if there are any suggestions.

I could also do a little fundraising by producing CD's of free software? ie open source type stuff... there is a fantastic web browser called Mozilla FireFox (www.mozilla.org) available both for windows and linux... as well as a free office suite (www.openoffice.org)... and linux distros perhaps... things that are really useful but that I could get a couple of dollars for making copies of. The particular licensing of the software totally allows it as well which would mean it is totally legal. (the license is the GPL - www.gnu.org)
