    EBA down?

Hi there!! I'm so *so* sorry about all this! Tomtom got it absolutely spot on - the culprit was the internet worm that was using google to randomly find sites that use the phpBB software to exploit (it was actually a PHP security hole, but this forum software had a specific exploit written for it). The site was in fact taken down by alpha.net.au - or rather, a redirect was put in so that it was inacessible, and I was called by them about it - he said it was for my own good so I wouldn't lose all my hard work - and he said I should just upgrade to the latest version of the software or apply the patches, and then I could put it back up again. Unfortunately it took some time. I had done it days and days ago, but there were several security checks I had to make to ensure the new version wouldn't be compromised. Thanyou all for your support and concern - and to Chemakazi for his active role in keeping the site going.

    EBA down....

oh P.S. basically I have to wait perhaps another day for the re-registration to go through... then I have to update the nameservers on the registrars site (so that other DNS servers can find it) and that will take a day or two to propogate... I'm so sorry for the amount of time it's been down for! but what with all the things that have been happening in my life lately (including moving!) I just haven't really had the time I'd like to spend on the site. I'd also like to add more features etc if there are any suggestions. I could also do a little fundraising by producing CD's of free software? ie open source type stuff... there is a fantastic web browser called Mozilla FireFox (www.mozilla.org) available both for windows and linux... as well as a free office suite (www.openoffice.org)... and linux distros perhaps... things that are really useful but that I could get a couple of dollars for making copies of. The particular licensing of the software totally allows it as well which would mean it is totally legal. (the license is the GPL - www.gnu.org)

wow thanks for all the support guys Something like that would be fantastic actually. Esp since I have just moved into my own place and things are very tight atm (haven't even paid my uni fees yet! were due on the 4th of feb )... But if I put a Paypal 'donate' button on the site, it would be really good because anyone who *doesn't* already have a paypal account, if they just sign up and put me as their referrer I automatically get $5 from paypal! which would mean that people didn't want to actually make a donation could still make that contribution without it costing them. What about t-shirts? I reckon they could be more viable than a calendar, although I was shown a nude calander that was made by the postgrad students in the school of chemistry to raise funds... (they took all the pics themselves, of themselves - some are awesome, esp the one that had them all standing on, next to etc giant chem equiptment on a bench. it looked SO real. like they really were mini people on a lab bench But yeah - he told me that they cost $10 each and were selling them for $15... so you really would need to sell all of them to make any money back. that could be a little risky... but what about t-shirts? I am sure that some good designs could be come up with... if people were interested in buying them... ?

Hi Guys!!! (I really should come here more often!... hell I should visit my own forums more often too hehe) I just discovered that my domain expired on the 12th of march. After registering it I very sensibly changed my contact email address to '[email protected]' *grin* which I haven't checked in months and months, but if it HAD... I wouldn't have got the expiry notice because the domain in that email address would have ceased to exist. I just purchased another 5 years. (*ouch* so poor atm)... so sorry about that. it should be up and running again in another day or two... until then - enjoy SAB twice as much *grin*

  7. Hi folks! I scanned in and fixed up the article that was published in the Good Weekend the saturday before last. It is called "The Freakiest Trip" and is by Kate Hamilton. I have posted it here: http://www.ethnobotany-australia.net/forum...opic.php?p=4268 enjoy :D [ 08. April 2003, 14:57: Message edited by: eccles ]

    The colour of alkaloids

thanks for all that info Torsten I really do have a long way to go wrt chemistry knowledge... but that's ok I guess we all have to start somewhere (and thanks for pointing out my innacuracies Auxin).

    The colour of alkaloids

um... in things like opals and other gems, you DO get it like that... but that is due to the presence of transition elements and co-ordination bonding... (I think!). In organic molecules it is due to the degree of freedom of electrons, and the way that increases and decreases is with the level of conjugation and aromaticity.

    The colour of alkaloids

RE the Harmaline base Torsten, does that only flouresce under UV light? (like the harman base)? So the salt is coloured then... different salts could well be different coloured. And depending on the waters of crystallisation you get different coloured crystals. now that didn't even occur to me. Is harmalol an alkaloid? And what is the deal with the glycoside you mentioned? (ie hamalol lactate). Which ones of these are active Torsten? and which would be present in an alkaloid extract? I imagine only Harmine and perhaps Harman salts, yes? so any crystalline product (assuming you are isolating the salt in the extraction and not the base) will be yellow? That seems to be confirmed by what people have said... but it doesn't answer the question of where the deep red colour might come from, unless it is the crystalline harmalol base... and yet it is not red in solution. Hehehe again I wish I had the stamina to actually try researching this... maybe some other time.

    The colour of alkaloids

Excellent information. nice to see that someone has had some sleep and could be bothered doing the actual research instead of making wild speculations thanks Torsten.

    Alien Creatures on Cacti...

I know lots of people report seeing mantis' or maintoid like creatures/aliens on mushrooms and DMT... but here is one on San Pedro It is approx 4" long (the mantis, not the cactus) This is just one of a whole heap that I took... Wish I got pic in the pose it was originally in... I also made a little video... and it kept attacking the camera! [ 27. February 2003, 12:11: Message edited by: eccles ]

    5-htp + B6 -- ineffective and dangerous?

oooop!!! sorry I was getting it mixed up with dopamine... And yeah Auxin you're right about the ionisation too I think (I couldn't quite remember whether there were some pH's where they are not ionised but of course they are hey
