This raises the question what is normal ? I am 6 '1" and weigh 80kg at the moment , for my age (36) i think i am normal , but i could be overweight ?

I'm 21, 6' tall, and about 80kg.

This is probably slightly overweight, but it's the skinniest I've ever been.

I have been overweight since I was about 11, until a year ago, when my long standing MJ habit finally caught up with me and killed my appetite.

Now I eat rather sensibly, and jiggle a lot less. :)

So, just like so many before me, I have a drug habit to thank for my new physique. :D

Yeah i have to say that too, what is normal? To many people im skinny, but others would call me normal, a few have even said fat(this is from very skinny ppl). So its all relative to what you compare to. Im about 5'9 weigh appox 67kg, 32" waist. Id say normal.

I'm a skinny fucker, I used to be heller chubby but going out to way too many dance parties and dnacing at a marathon pace allnight long soon sorted that out..only thing is now I cant put any weight on for the life of me.

You see people absolutly hammering the dance floor when they first start out but before long you see them throwing in those energy saving moves.

Like I was saying on IRC lastnight, I have found that once someone goes passed buring fat they start to burn muscle and then its a real bitch to get it back on.

You see so many chuibby little teenyboppers starting at parties dancing their hearts out, then over the months you can see them dropping the weight like nothing else, 6-12 months later they are all skinny and gaunt looking. totally differnet.

what is normal? there are tables produced via statistics and via what is healthy (ie the latter is lower than the former).

hmmm, looks like the fatties aren't owning up. I know more overweight people on these forums than normal/ideal weight people, including myself!

or maybe the problem is that those who voted normal don't actually know what normal is.

I don't know what normal is its not the point we are more skinny then fat so yeah I was just checking that.

well, you haven't really. Because half of the skinnys could well be normal and most of the normal could well be overweight.

I'll find a table and we'll see if everyone got their weight right.

OK, it's not done by weight anymore. It's now done by Body Mass Index (BMI).

Weight (Kg)

BMI = -----------------------

Height (m) X Height (m)

Grade 3 thinness BMI

Grade 2 thinness BMI 16.00 – 16.99

Grade 1 thinness BMI 17.00 –18.49

Normal range BMI 18.50 – 24.99

Grade 1 overweight BMI 25.00 –29.99

Grade 2 overweight BMI 30.00 –39.99

Grade 3 overweight BMI > 40.00

or if you're lazy, then here is the chart

f102403.jpg

I'm glad I checked cos I thought I was overweight. Turns out I am just 500g inside the normal zone.

Damn, I don't get to change my vote.

well, according to T's chart I'm at a healthy weight.... But the height/weight thingy isn't always accurate. If you look at the governator's height and weight when he was Mr Olympia or whatever 6 tims in a row... he'd be classed as obese.

mr bumpy - do you really think the governator is a healthy body?

anyway, the BMI rules exclude athletes. if you're an athlete I doubt you even need to consider obesity as a problem (unless you're a sumo wrestler )

Torsten your weight is ideal, and i mean IDEAL. Grrr But i will own up to being overweight for my height. i am 5 feet 11 inches and i weigh, well, 85 kg, but my wife and my mum swear it is mostly muscle. Granted i do not look as sexy as Darcy when he is out harvesting Kava Kava, but that is an extreme comparison anyway.

they say (or they said) that overweight people are more prone to be depressives, but underweight folks are more prone to schizophrenia. Personally in my life I have noticed tendencies in ppl that match with this bit of Mr. Burns-esque "craniology"

Obviously that doesnt mean there are not many, many exceptions.

Also it doesn't mean it's true at all... might be just 19th century English science-BS :) There was a lot of that.

(For you Americans, that corresponds to roughly Kansas-level )

I'll never forget when Bryant Gumble evaluated Katie Couric's ample cleavage as an "endomorph" physique. God bless Bryant "Beige, not Black" Gumble

Gumble gumble gumble

man i'm drunk! Back to the drawing board.

metalguru- I think you've got it the wrong way round. Depressed people eat for instant gratification and hence become fat. manic or schizophrenics usually have very high metabolism and hence are mostly skinny. An exception to this are depressed people who suffer from frequent anxiety.

The problem is that both are feedback loops, hence a skinny person can get fat really quickly when they enter a phase of depression and will get more and more depressed due to lower metabolism, less excercise and lowered selfesteem. Ditto for the manics, who build up more and more adrenaline and burn more and more calories, then eat more sugar to stop the drain, which just makes them more manic. Or alternatively manics use their control over their food intake as a crutch that helps them build self esteem by providing them with selfcontrol and before you know it they have anorexia or bulimia.

There are plenty of exceptions and cross overs though, but the general pattern is there.

Personally I'm as fat as ten pigs atm and I fucken hate it. I started throwing on the weight once I gave up my day job and began working from home, which is pretty sedentary and doesn't involve much socialising or getting out.

I work out about once a week, three when I'm being good, but really there isn't any substitute for the zillion or so extra steps people take unwittingly as a part of their daily rounds when they work away from home. My food intake is lower and more sensible than it ever was.

I stayed in Bris recently and was surprised to see the obesity trend reversed in most ppl in the CBD but after a couple of days of running around, catching public transport and walking from parking places that were a ridiculous distance from my destination, it all made sense, cos I hadn't realised how sedentary I was til then

We used to have fucken excellent first rate fitness classes locally, but the hidjus insurance rates payable by both the hall committees and the instructors put paid to this. Ironic isn't it, its easier to keep in good shape in the cities than it is in the bush. Good job I'm happier here :)

Torsten:

actually i completely misrepesented this piece of old-fashioned "monster in face, monster in nature" stuff.

in fact, the theory was that BIG-BONED people, with broad shoulders (though not overweight necessarily, just big-boned, large-framed people) are more prone to depression (regardless of their height).

Small-boned, structurally thin, narrow-shouldered folks are meant to be more prone to schizophrenia.

as an example, wide people with thick bones, who for the sake of argument are their ideal weight to), are supposedly more prone to depression.

Tall, narrow people, who for the sake of argument are also close to their "ideal weight", are generally more prone to schizophrenia.

I have not chosen "depression" and "schizophrenia" as "opposites". Obviously they are nothing like "opposites"!

but the old English theory popular amongst the gentlemen of the time, mainly criminologists and physicians, was that "slight" people are more likely schizophrenics, while "subtantial" people, even if their "ideal weight", are more likely depressives.

Of course I also subscribe to the theory that the skull measurements of a person will predict whether that person will be a criminal (and also will very accurately predict whether that person is gay, a vegetarian, or a fan of crappy 1970s british comedies)

i haven't had time to read it and i am just going out for the day.. but here is a page that i presume talks about theories of body type and how body types relate to mental health.

http://mwillett.org/mind/divert.htm

of course it may be instructions on how to build a hovercraft. If it is indeed hovercraft instructions, could someone email me? please? Homer told me that the Alan Parsons Project was some sort of hovercraft but when i listened carefully to "I, Robot" backwards i friggin got no real info.

see ya
