ace1928
Wheat is an awesome alternative. Buy it as chicken feed pretty easy. Cheaper option

Fenris
I tried wheat but it gets a bit sticky and doesn't drain that well, I had some good success with millet & sorghum.
migraineur
You don't have to use rye. There are numerous other grains that you can use and you often see them mixed together in wild bird seed which is what many people use. I have used wheat for years without problems.
Cue
Rye is expensive where I live.If you can't find rye there are alternatives. But exactly what alternative works best would depend on the species that you are trying to grow.
El Presidente Hillbillios
if your buying wheat from a feed place here in aus there are different kinds> i think maybe thats what accounts for the differences of opinion in using wheat usually.Feed wheat can be pretty crappy or can be just whats over produced better quality stuff. If you buy "prime hard" then its better quality. but i think importantly its been better looked after. Hasnt been wet and dried out after harvestWheat worked for me for years and years too
