nitrogen Posted May 14, 2014 (edited) That's nice to see - beautiful seedlings - I am not surprised they are fast growing.. I don't have any of the Psycho0 x Cuzco cross - Zelly has a couple of mine in the ground at his place though - still small since they were never grafted, but I bet they'll be pretty awesome in a few years.. Btw the Cuzcoensis the Psycho0 was crossed with was seed grown - it isn't the common cuzcoensis clone we have here in the northern hemisphere.. I crossed one with Psycho0 and it's seed grown sibling with the N1 bridgesii the following year.. So the Psycho0xcuzcoensis and N1xcuzcoensis are different cuzcoensis - one has these huge reddish multicolor spines while the other has somewhat less huge and blondish spines.. I'm afraid I can't recall which was crossed with which though lol.. Here they are: [url=http://s199.photobucket.com/user/bringyourownbios/media/3Peru10May2007.jpg.html] Edited May 14, 2014 by nitrogen
Berengar Posted May 14, 2014 Wow, both of those are beautifull, but the first one is absolutely breathtaking!! I still have a few seeds of the cross both ways, P0Xcuzco and cuzcoXP0, but waiting for some peres to become available because I have the worst luck raising seedlings on their own roots, multitude of hazzards are present at my place, molds, fungus gnats, myself...
hookahhead Posted May 14, 2014 I agree, beautiful plants/pictures as usual!
nitrogen Posted May 14, 2014 Yea those two were spectacular - they grew like beasts also, very rapid - though they eventually became rootbound, were put out in a very harsh all-sun landscaping environment, and stopped growing completely - they have almost fallen over, the roots are going into the ground which is all that keeps them up - that and the landscaping plants around it - they look all grey and dessicated etc - lol, but they flowered! I should prune them back and put the pot somewhere better for them.. Actually I think the N1 cross came the year before the psycho0 cross, but I can't recall.. Lol usually I keep better notes on these matters..
hookahhead Posted May 22, 2014 This is my #1 favorite plant to sprout from these seeds, my TPQC x TPM "B1/Cactapillar". It is just my luck that this has also been the hardest one to propagate. Tonight, I happened to notice a strange "absent areole". At first I thought it had been knocked off, but it appears that it's mutated. There is another one missing to the on the column to the right. I'll do a proper update soon

kapitän kamasutra Posted June 18, 2014 I started acclimating Nitrogens crosses to sun and open air today. Last time I checked they all looked like normal seedlings, but now some start growing funny these here are tpm X N1 these here tpc X juuls I'm tempted to graft some, but I think I better not mess with them as long as they grow reasonable fast on their own.
nitrogen Posted June 18, 2014 Aw try at least one or two! Cactus growing isn't for impatient people, but grafting does allow more of an instant gratification experience.. It's so awesome to see them grow quick like that - and they can be grafted at any stage of growth.. Having them grow up only on their own roots is beautiful to watch also though - here's the TPC x Juules etc that I left on their own - they are really growing well now, as our summer begins in the northern hemisphere.. And some other gratuitous cactus porn shots - TPQC x TPM, then TPM x (SS02 x pachanoi) and then the third one is a TPQC x TPM as well, which started out mutant, which is why I grafted it, but has now reverted to a normal growth that I really like - really notchy on the ribs, I imagine this will be an epic looking cactus when fully grown.. Lol, I just got my Canon Powershot S90 working again, so I'm on a bit of a photo spree - I had lost the battery charger, and so I've just been using pics from my phone camera till this past week or so when I went and bought a new charger - definitely nicer pics with the S90..

hostilis Posted July 5, 2014 (edited) Own roots seedlings of interest. Lots of crests and (possible) monstroses. I wont be saying which hybrids they are since they all look the same right now, but they're all nitrogen's hybrids. I've been neglecting the living hell out of these seedlings. I just let them sit outside and I water whenever I think of it. They seem to like it. I've only lost 2 seedlings out of a ton. naja naja Posted July 9, 2014 A few of the mutants huddled together for shelter from the hail the other night, I managed to capture a few photo's of them.
Kykeion Posted August 14, 2014 I've got a question for folks growing these crosses, particularly those who are growing these on their own roots. Have any of you noticed that the N1 crosses seem to grow with more vigor and are a bit hardier than some of the other crosses? I received four seedlings each of most of the crosses in a trade this past spring, and noticed that the N1 crosses handled the shipping/re-potting better (they may have even been slightly larger seedlings as well, but I don't recall for certain). They have since also grown the most and are several time larger than some of the other crosses. Some of the other crosses seem to have stalled or at least significantly slowed their growth. Last month I finally managed to sow the seed of these crosses that I received during the initial give away. I have had better germination than I expected given the age of the seed, but once again noticed that the N1 crosses have the highest rates of germination (greater than 90% vs. 50-60% with some of the other crosses), and the seedlings are noticeably larger than the other crosses a month after sowing. Just curious if anyone else has had similar observations.
PhoenixSon Posted August 15, 2014 If anyone has any spare segments they want to trade or sell please pm, not after large sections just enough to root and grow on, then eventually trade. have the peru crest and soon will be getting a small pach crest, also a tiny pach x j3 that is growing very slow. any help would be much appreciated! Auxin Posted November 9, 2014 I've noticed something odd on the TPM X (S X P) and (S X P) X TPM lines. When a seedling is put on pereskiopsis it will begin growing and then the new growth will turn bright yellow and the whole thing will die. I've never seen that happen with grafts before and it is only happening with these two groups. Not all tho, a few went full course to degraft and are doing fine. Its just odd. Whats the cause of this type of graft fail?
mutant Posted November 9, 2014 could it be a variegated segment or that you burnt that segment and then it took water and roted? just saying... my seedlings are pretty small still... didnt graft any yet...
Auxin Posted November 9, 2014 It couldnt be sun burn because the seedlings were grown in full sun for months and then moved indoors, wedge grafted, and then they grew 1 to 3 cm of nice green before turning yellow on the new growth, and then the old growth before promptly rotting. Ungrafted siblings are doing fine. It also doesnt look like variegation because, as far as I know, variegation doesnt start at the tip and then move down an established stem before rotting? If they do then I'm glad I have no variegated cacti, lol Perhaps some kind of stress relating to rapid indoor growth on seedlings that had been growing hard under the summer sun? Cactus PTSD. Only happens with plants with a (S X P) parent tho. I did have an orgy cactus (TPC X everyone at the party) rot on a peres but it didnt fit the above pattern. Perhaps I'm just killing off the flimsy limp wristed cacti from that group and it'll be the leathery biker cacti that survive.
