Fuck, that is a massive quake! Once again, I'm missing the footage. Show much of the carnage? I wonder how far-reaching the tsunami will be? I can only imagine how bad it must be there at the moment...

I had a dream last night where I was talking Japanese

There is heaps of footage of cars getting washed off roads man its too horrible I am gonna be up all night watching it and feeling so terrible for all the poor people that will have died :'(

Feel so guilty watching it all unfold on tv from the safety of my bedroom.

Any earthquake sensitives out there ?

For the last two days I've felt crap and I have even hurled a few times.

Same thing happened before Christchurch, but without the vomiting. The bigger the seismic event (Volcanoes too) the sicker I get.

Before a quake the fault emits ELF waves and some people can pick up on it, apparently I'm one of them, which really sucks.

Before a quake the fault also emits a tone which I can hear, so can most people but they don't recognise it for what it is.

Most times when I get all the symptoms I don't draw the conclusion that a quake is coming but the next day (after the quake) my missus or I will.

Another weird thing(that sounds way too silly for any reasonable person to believe) I get a craving to eat popcorn before a quake almost everytime, and when I start to cook it my missus makes some remark that I'll trigger a quake. I made some popcorn yesterday and I also made some the night before the Christchurch quake.

A few people have my address, you can send the men with straight jackets out here any time.

Here's one line of thought that has a few followers... it's food for thought but not intended to go any further than that.

Sun activity ramped up around the 22nd Feb (Christchurch) - one major event February 15 - Sun's surface erupted in an X-class solar flare (+ Earth geomagnetic disturbances ~18th Feb)

Recently multiple CME's, high speed solar stream Earth directed, multiple M and a X-class flare:

Whether solar flares can trigger earthquakes?

We present the study of 682 earthquakes of ¡Ý4.0 magnitude observed during January 1991 to January 2007 in the light of solar flares observed by GOES and SOXS missions in order to explore the possibility of any association between solar flares and earthquakes. Our investigation preliminarily shows that each earthquake under study was preceded by a solar flare of GOES importance B to X class by 10-100 hrs. However, each flare was not found followed by earthquake of magnitude ¡Ý4.0. We classified the earthquake events with respect to their magnitude and further attempted to look for their correlation with GOES importance class and delay time. We found that with the increasing importance of flares the delay in the onset of earthquake reduces. The critical X-ray intensity of the flare to be associated with earthquake is found to be ~10-6 Watts/m2. On the other hand no clear evidence could be established that higher importance flares precede high magnitude earthquakes. Our detailed study of 50 earthquakes associated with solar flares observed by SOXS mission and other wavebands revealed many interesting results such as the location of the flare on the Sun and the delay time in the earthquake and its magnitude. We propose a model explaining the charged particles accelerated during the solar flare and released in the space that undergone further acceleration by interplanetary shocks and produce the ring current in the earth's magnetosphere, which may enhance the process of tectonics plates motion abruptly at fault zones. It is further proposed that such sudden enhancement in the process of tectonic motion of plates in fault zones may increase abruptly the heat gradients on spatial (dT/dx) and temporal (dT/dt) scales responsible for earthquakes.

Geomagnetic Storms and their Influence on the Human Brain Functional State

The biological and systems ecological are significantly exposed to the influence of solar and geomagnetic activities; they play very important role in our daily life.

One of the main targets of negative influence of the geomagnetic storms on health state is the human nervous system. The results of the detailed studies, show that during the periods of strong geomagnetic disturbances, the number of hospitalized patients with nervous diseases notably increases, the cases of myocardial infarcts and cerebral insults, different paroxysmal conditions, nervous disturbance disorders and suicidal attempts become more frequent, the psycho-neurological diseases become aggravated and so on. At the same time, some reports show comparatively positive influences of heliogeophysical conditions on the human health state.

For the persons, suffering from epilepsy, a reduction of frequency of epileptic attacks and improvement of general health state were detected during increases in the level of geomagnetic field disturbances. Researches, conducted simultaneously at different geographical regions of the globe, revealed that during geomagnetic storms some monotype changes in the health state of mentally ill patients take place. It is curious that with an increase of disturbance of geomagnetic field, the number of epileptic attacks decreases.

During high solar activity periods, the predominance of maniacal phases in patients suffering from manic-depressive psychosis is of frequent and short-duration nature. When there is stabilization in the geomagnetic conditions, the maniacal phase is replaced by the depressive stage.

Regular tv viewers will be familiar with the repetitive nature of disaster footage..

What about the nuclear reactors in Japan

News says 8.9 magnitude earthquake, they're saying its bigger than the 1923 quake in Japan that killed over 140,00 people... :(

fucking horrible.

Yeah, I've bailed. Enough TV for a while. All I wanted to see was the footage, not the news presenter repeating herself. Even the footage repeated!

So apparently due to shutting down those nuclear reactors millions are now without power. The amount of damage that will have been sustained in Japan (and surround countries) once the tsunamis are over is going to be unfathomable enormous. It will take them a long time to recover from this. It will be interesting to see how Japan copes with it. They are supposed to have the best measures in place to deal with earthquakes, but this I can't imagine them being prepared for this.

7th biggest earthquake on record!

Interesting info Alchemica. Will have to look into it a bit more. Suppose it's not out of the realm of belief. We are in a solar system after all, and if the moon can affect the tides, something as massive as the sun should be able to affect physics and life on earth.

LONDON (Reuters) - According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and the earthquake in Japan this morning, which caused hundreds of casualties, "would have shifted the axis of rotation of the Earth nearly 10 cm."

A note explains that the impact of this event on the axis of rotation was much greater even than that of the great Sumatra earthquake of 2004 and probably second only to Chile earthquake of 1960.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) north of Tokyo, "remains at a high temperature" because it "cannot cool down," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.

Trade Minister Banri Kaieda said that a small radiation leak could occur at the plant, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported early Saturday.

These and other issues caused by the 8.9-magnitude quake prompted authorities to order an evacuation of people within 2 to 3 kilometers (1.2 to 1.8 miles) of the plant, a move Edano called "precautionary." Early Saturday morning, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said that the evacuation order had been extended to those within 10 kilometers of the plant.

They're now saying that radiation is 1000 times above normal at the affected nuclear power plant

Another wake up call to all of those who believe in *clean* nuclear energy

One natural disaster could turn into another Chernobyl...

I hope for the Japanese people that does not happen, the consequences would be horrific

The Institute for Public Accuracy issued the following statement by nuclear expert, Kevin Kamp, about the risk of nuclear disaster in post-Earthquake Japan: “The electrical grid is down. The emergency diesel generators have been damaged. The multi-reactor Fukushima atomic power plant is now relying on battery power, which will only last around eight hours. The danger is, the very thermally hot reactor cores at the plant must be continuously cooled for 24 to 48 hours. Without any electricity, the pumps won’t be able to pump water through the hot reactor cores to cool them. Once electricity is lost, the irradiated nuclear fuel could begin to melt down. If the containment systems fail, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur.”

“In addition to the reactor cores, the storage pool for highly radioactive irradiated nuclear fuel is also at risk. The pool cooling water must be continuously circulated. Without circulation, the still thermally hot irradiated nuclear fuel in the storage pools will begin to boil off the cooling water. Within a day or two, the pool’s water could completely boil away. Without cooling water, the irradiated nuclear fuel could spontaneously combust in an exothermic reaction. Since the storage pools are not located within containment, a catastrophic radioactivity release to the environment could occur. Up to 100 percent of the volatile radioactive Cesium-137 content of the pools could go up in flames and smoke, to blow downwind over large distances. Given the large quantity of irradiated nuclear fuel in the pool, the radioactivity release could be worse than the Chernobyl nuclear reactor catastrophe of 25 years ago.”

Kamps is a specialist in nuclear waste at Beyond Nuclear and conducted research last year assessing the state of nuclear facilities in Japan.

http://blogs.forbes.com/williampentland/2011/03/11/risk-of-nuclear-catastrophe-escalates-in-japan-worse-than-chernobyl/

EDIT: I should point out that Kamps is from the anti-nuclear camp so he's citing a worse case scenario here.

Hopefully the Japanese are well prepared for just this kind ov emergency..hopefully.

another Chernobyl...

Chernobyl was not a meltdown. At Chernobyl there was a failure in the cleaning system which resulted in a cloud ov steam that had been used to clean the reactors core escaping.

If Chernobyl had been a breach ov the radioactive core, or a meltdown, much ov Eastern Europe would be a wasteland.

I hate it when there are disasters, and the news here in Australia say , "and there are xxx number of Australians there" I find this annoying. We are all equal.

It seems every month there is another disaster. They are coming thick and fast these days.:(

@Nabraxas

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm technically incorrect yes (no science degrees on my walls, can u tell :P) but still a terrifying thought that on top of the tsunami and earthquake there could be a nuclear disaster to top it all off. As if the poor people of Japan don't have enough to worry about. :'(

I read about in a news piece this morning online, some people worrying about economics and the damage to trade agreements between Australia and Japan as a result of this disaster.

Boggles my mind to think that someone's initial reaction isn't to the welfare of all the people affected in Japan, but to the possible impact on their own selves through money 'issues'.

What a selfish, greedy world we live in.

It just gets worse... Apparently Japan has been hit by another two (smaller) quakes since the one yesterday?

I hate it when there are disasters, and the news here in Australia say , "and there are xxx number of Australians there" I find this annoying.

I hear you there.

Back in high school, when the Bali bombings happened, I was in an English class and everyone was moaning about how terrible it was that those nine poor Australians had died. As my title suggests, along with previous things I've written, I'm not a great fan of the human species. So I just lost it. I went off at how bloody stupid and self-absorbed we are, that the media relentlessly plays the sad story of these 9 Aussies, while everyday there are millions of people starving in Africa and other parts of the developing world, that there was a drought in Tanzania at the time and the hippos were congregating in the last of the waterholes (by now nothing more than tiny pools of mud), awaiting a slow death in the sun as they dry out, just as had already happened to dozens of them, that there is massive suffering and death globally, yet virtually none of it gets reported, yet because these poor people happened to be Australian it was terrible, sad and shocking news. Suffice to say I offended quite a few people. But it was well-deserved. It sickens me how patriotic people are, as if Australians are somehow better than other nationalities.

Meltdown ??

Explosion ??

What is the difference ?

The out come would still be a disaster.

In a video I watched on the Chernobyl disaster the concrete base of the reactor melted and then it later caught fire and blew up, it sent up a radioactive cloud over vast tracts of Europe, killing thousands and turning vast areas in to radioactive wasteland.

High levels of radiation were detected in Sweden and even the Mediterranean.
