Slybacon Posted April 6, 2010 ^^^^^ I think it would be quite easy.... They are territorial and not as fussy as cows. We just need to use fencing the same as deer paddocks, triple height.... Camel meat is also another answer. It is very sweet. Camels eat anything and have soft hooves. Kempsey Fredos sells camel pies.... mmmmm yum

Quill Posted April 6, 2010 Yeah man camels. That's a good suggestion, though i doubt any meat market bigwigs would hear you. I think that that is a terrific idea, getting rid of a feral species AND diverting peoples "need" for meat away from chickens and cows. Now we just need to convince them that camel is yummy. Do you want your burger with one hump or two? And what about cane toads man, could we make them edible?
Chiral Posted April 6, 2010 Yep farming feral species is bloody great idea IMO, round em up and start breeding them then use to fill up the shelves for the massive meat eating market we have here. Fox meat Camel meat Carp meat they are just a few and I'm sure there are more I'm unaware of, has anyone ever wondered if the cane toad is a viable food source...? Slybacon Posted April 6, 2010 I think that Cane Toads are overlooked. Maybe the mycologist's amongst us could experiment with injecting toad venom into substrates. I've heard mushrooms have enzymes that convert chems into more interesting ones. They look pretty meaty too. Maybe Toad Jerky, or dried legs.... Toad Stir Fry.... Auxin Posted April 6, 2010 Itd be a helpful start to get people to just not waste so much of the things we already eat. In celery they throw away the leaves (a spice) and the tops and the bottoms, in cauliflower they throw away the edible leaf stalks and core (like 1/3 to 1/2 the mass), in greens they toss the stems, in greens cooked in water they dump the water where half the soluble nutrients went (I drink it, kale tea and mustard greens tea is good.. asparagus tea is great!) I've never seen an american boil meat scraps and bones for soup stock. Stuff like that.
Chiral Posted April 6, 2010 I've never seen an american boil meat scraps and bones for soup stock. Stuff like that. Well not strictly Americans but my extended family in Texas are half Mexican and they are superb cooks and utilise a lot more of the food like you say, particularly when it comes to meat, like pigs feet and bones etc to make stock and stews... FancyPants Posted April 6, 2010 I would very happily pay a big premium for meat that's not only more environmentally sound in it's farming practices, but also more humane for the animals. I LOOOOVE meat. Would never give it up for the world and so help me god I'll die with a big piece of juicy medium rare rump steak in my gob... but that's within sight that there needs to be something done about current practices for obtaining the meat. Roo meat, camel meat, I don't know why these aren't looked into viably more often? Most meat eating westerners eat too much steak on their plate anyway, portion sizes reduced would help as well as many people might find their wallets lighter because they're not buying too much than necessary. Utilising more of the animals also helps. I do my bit on that account by buying tinned soups with "beef" in them and lets not forget meat pies...
-YT- Posted April 6, 2010 Im down with FancyPants ay i seriously dig meat but im all for sustainable & ethical practices, roo and camel meat theres a huge market there just waiting to be satisfied who wants to hunt some camel with me we could start a buisness... if i had enough space i would raise and slaughter my own cattle but might have to wait till im out of the suburbs for that lol. even if you dont eat meat you are still eating something that at one point was alive dont forget life feeds on life feeds on life
Slybacon Posted April 13, 2010 I seriously think rats would make for good eating. You could breed them readily and fatten them up on scraps then make ratty Kebabs. Mind you I would never Eat eat my two rats Chili and Crumpet ;)
ThunderIdeal Posted April 13, 2010 (edited) failure indeed probably for the best if nobody googles 'hardcore rat porn' Edited April 14, 2010 by ThunderIdeal

Auxin Posted April 13, 2010 Theres a very basic reason I'd go for guinea pigs over rats.. theres an assload of wild rats pretty much everywhere, big disease/parasite vector to infect your food rats. However you never hear of guinea pig infestations.
FancyPants Posted April 14, 2010 Brings tears to my eyes. How could ya eat him...poor Ben I used to have pet rats, one in particular I was very attached to so that song used to make me cry when I was younger . I would eat rat - not pets - bred like cattle for food if I had to. But wouldn't rabbits be a better option than either rat or guinea pig? Rabbit meat is pretty tasty, so long as they were farmed in places of Aus not infested with wild bunny myxomatosis(sp?).

I've never seen an american boil meat scraps and bones for soup stock. Stuff like that. I fully agree, there is waaay too much consumption and waste of food and resources going on, as a whole we eat more than our bodies need and waste so much. Growing your own even small supplement supply of veggies and greens is rewarding in so many ways, what you cant use of the fruit/veg/green goes back into the garden as compost, I try to buy meat in bulk (freeze) and use say 1/2 to 1 full steak just with the produce of my garden (mostly) to feed 5 ppl instead of one or 2 servings. I am also lucky to have friends and family who do this too and we always have gifts of fresh fruit and veg coming in and going out. Being a supplier of archery equipment we had an advert that had a picture one of our customers proudly displaying his camel (all meat was used) and no wound showing, and well that caused so much jumping around with activists it was insane! I would not like to raise an animal and kill it myself to eat but i would raise it and swap it with another individual animal to kill and butcher - I have Butchered one of our sheep b4 but could not do the deed. ref1ect1ons Posted April 14, 2010 ^agree. Kangaroo is good btw, I feel really Australian when I eat it too. I get it from woolies now pretty often. Check it out. Things die, get over it. You will die, i dont see it as a bad thing because the opposite if death is birth. Activists are right in that we should treat the camels better before they die, but a clean kill with no wound ...this is what we want to see, this is good. ThunderIdeal Posted April 14, 2010 explain this no-wound thing to me.
WillowWhisper Posted April 14, 2010 The Camel was stalked on foot, (after driving in to well known area) taken with 1 shot by a 80lb compound bow with a 3 blade razor sharp broadhead, clean swift kill. I would post the pic but, am not sure i would not cause offence.
ThunderIdeal Posted April 14, 2010 okay so it refers to a quick humane death by projectile is it true that roo hunters are legally meant to always get clean shots like this? what part of the anatomy do you hit to get a clean kill?
WillowWhisper Posted April 14, 2010 through the lungs/heart for the fastest. Yes hunters must only take the shot if they are as close to 100% sure of this hit some who use guns maybe they head hunt but (i dont use or have much to do with guns) it may not be as reliable as the lung/heart zone. *there was a wound on the camel say the size of a 50c but it was not visible in the pic.
