GingaNinja Posted January 31, 2009 One of my PC pach's has start to behave weird. the tip seems to have suffered some form of damage but now its showing lighter coloured patches. Any idea if I should do something if it is a potentially damaging disease? Fanks
Teotzlcoatl Posted January 31, 2009 (edited) Genetic mutation. You sir... have a retarded cactus. Very cool! Edited January 31, 2009 by Teotz'
MORG Posted February 1, 2009 Ummmm, why must it be a genetic mutation? If it's a condition that has only just manifested itself recently, ie. otherwise normal, green tissue is turning itself pale and yellow, I would be inclined to believe it is not genetic at all but environmental or disease. strangebrew Posted February 1, 2009 Fweaky! Looks like the tip has terminated naturally so it'd be a mutation rather than environmental damage. Expect a pup or pups to emerge.
herbologist Posted February 1, 2009 (edited) I've seen a few Trichos that were getting full sun started to look similar to that. Particularly Eileen, when moved so they get less light, they went back to normal after about a week. Edited February 1, 2009 by salem13
mac Posted February 1, 2009 (edited) i have a small Echinopsis subdenudata that i noticed the same light patches on this only appeared once i planted it out in full sun , it seems to be growing much faster, so i put it down to either very hot days in full sun , a type of sunburn ? or (stretch marks ) light patches because it is growing much faster than it was in the very small pot it was in Edited February 1, 2009 by mac
Micromegas Posted February 1, 2009 The light coloured patches are normal and are a response to heat. My cacti are looking extremely ragged and patchy after this crazy heat wave. The mutation at the tip is quite strange tho, as there doesn't seem to be any damage. I've never seen a PC do that. Interesting to see what happens next and if it throws pups as strangebrew mentions. I have had similar things occur but only in response to very obvious insect damage.
Teotzlcoatl Posted February 1, 2009 Are you sure that's a P.C. "Pachanot" pachanoi???
bit Posted February 1, 2009 Quite normal ime, seen a few cacti do it when moved from shade to bright light. It's a halfway point to sunburn.
kakti Posted February 1, 2009 Yep very common. Nothing to worry about at all, and definitely not a genetic mutation.
