    thenook.org down

Sorry to resurrect this but I could've sworn right around the start of 2020 the site/server was rebuilt and a bunch of old faces were popping in to get their OG usernames back. I wanted to drop in today but cannot seem to locate the site. Did the URL change, or is the site gone again? Tried several variations of of url but am getting nada. Thanks

    T. cordobensis

Yeah MS can you post pictures of a mature FR991? My small cutting I got from you years ago is just now starting to thicken up. Certainly different and more spiny than my Au sourced Scopulicola which has absolutely no spines at all. Smooth as a baby's ass

    Pupaholic

I have a couple of KK339's that have between 4-7 pups, certainly more than your average Trichocereus. It looks like one of the pups in the first picture had its tip damaged, thereby forcing the cactus to continue with more pups. But then when I see pups coming off the sides and stuff.....are you guys sure BAP wasn't applied somewhere in there? Because if not I'm 99% sure you have Witches Broom. And if that is the case you do definitely want to keep them separated from the rest of your collection as the virus can spread to nearby plants fairly easily. I've seen entire forests infected with 100s of trees next to each other suffering from it.

    Cactus pics

Pretty strange that the cactus in picture 5 of post 12 has wavy ribs whereas none of the other pictures seem to. Most would immediately consider it a "T. Cuzcoensis" and the rest "T. Peruvianus". Thank you for posting all of these, you have some beautiful plants!

    Feast YOUR Eyes!!!

Wow that is one beautiful collection. I honestly thought it was a botanical garden of some sort until I read what you said. What an incredible find, something I'd never be able to do that where I live. The one time I was in the southwest of the US I was driving around admiring the cactus and this one super old (70+) guy was having a cactus sale! It was great talking to some old timer who had a cactus hobby that was overtaking his backyard, although no where near the scale of that. You guys should start looking to buy these up when they go on estate sales if you're able to afford it and work from home

    Trichocereus 8+ ribbed pics..

Couldn't tell ya, I bought it as a rooted plant just a tad smaller than it is now. They grow quite slow around here (both seedlings and more mature plants) so I'd estimate at least 5-7 years old.

    Trichocereus 8+ ribbed pics..

    8 Ribbed T. Terscheckii and 13 ribbed T. Taquimbalensis

    Trichocereus 8+ ribbed pics..

Here's a bunch of T. Peruvianus with 8 ribs. The first one is a Mesa Gardens sourced T. Pachanoi. The rest all came as seedlings from unknown lineage. Unfortunately I do not have any of these cacti anymore so I can't post new pics :/

    more ID's

First and second look like some type of Stenocereus. Third is probably Myrtillocactus geometrizans.

    Disease or mutation?

Yep very common. Nothing to worry about at all, and definitely not a genetic mutation.
  11. kakti

    Mammillaria as an admixture?

He's on a very extended holiday, alas I don't believe he will be posting for a very long time.

    The ordinary-ness of "Eileen"

My ~7" Eileen cut survived in a neighbor's mailbox in below freezing temps for over 2 weeks, possibly 3. Obviously I haven't compared other cacti to it in that respect but it was pretty impressive. It could have been a fluke, maybe unrooted cuttings are more cold tolerant than planted cacti, but during that same time period of all of my planted cacti in a greenhouse perished. Perhaps others can share their experience regarding Eileen's cold-hardiness, specifically when potted?

    Winter in the greenhouse

Great job Osprey, I'm glad to see the structure is holding sturdy (and warm) this time. Let's just hope the trees stay away from this one

    frigidii bridgesii

Not sure exactly, but it was at least 3 months of no water when that happened.
