Any suggestions on how to encourage base pupping?

Recommended Posts

A lot of my cacti are growing up and up

I wouldn't mind to see a few pups and branches coming out

Anyone know of a technique to encourage or induce this?

Do you remember that pupping agent thread awhile back?

That's the only sure if way I know...

Was that here or on another forum?

Some threads that might help-

Damn! I've looked and looked and can't find that thread!

Does anybody remember what I'm talking about? It's a chemical you put on the areoles to make it pup.

Perhaps that thread was at the nook? Anybody remember what I'm talking about?

When u plant them or pot them up put them on a slight angle, works for me.

I also think miracle grow causes basal pupping too & my cactus seem to love it. I know its not the reccomende low N but my plants do'nt mind.

I suggest Searls liquid Cacti and Succulent fert, everytime I use it I see more pupping action.

Another more invasive way would be to drill the meristem them cover the hole (maybe glue it up?) or lop the top but thats a but unatractive.

Reading Osprey's recent threads with the pics of his ground-planted cacti garden (either here or at the Nook), he mentioned that a lot of his plants had started basal pupping after planting in-ground. That'd be the easiest way IMO.

Also, Teotz' is on the money with the recent talk of using BAP solution to hormonally induce pupping. Plenty of info in the 'Inducing Pupping?' thread at the Nook. Not sure if its available in Aus (I suspect it'd be around if one searches) but that'd be a very cool way to make some insanely bushy columnar cacti

And in older threads it has been said that using smaller pots and effectively making your plants root bound can help with basal pupping (or it might be placing root bound plants into larger pots). There are a few older threads here that have lots of suggestions and techniques - maybe hit the SE :)

A word of caution with using BAP. It does encourage pupping, but it seems the pups are likely to pup themselves while still small. I'm sure this is a matter of dose, but honestly I don't know where the tipping point is for mutant growth with this stuff. It is cool, though.

I used very little BAP, and wound up with pups that look like this:

Hey Coschi

I was just reading a thread where someone mentioned placing a cutting on its side will cause it to produce a lot of base pups. Also causing it to grow a lot slower.

cheers

i got a few pups simply by replanting a pedro of mine into a bigger pot. it must have been because when i replanted it it was on an angle like shruman says. i did this unintentionally and i got a few little beauties within a couple of weeks.
