Favorite drug movie

Recommended Posts

There's a discussion at the nook about drug movies.

http://www.thenook.org/forum/index.php?sho...mp;#entry557926

I consider myself both a movie and drug nerd so I love it when the two come together in a great way. By my definition this would include any movie or doc. that portrayed drug use, was a good tripping movie, or would be appreciated by the "drug person" for addressing various philosophical questions 'n topics (metaphysical, epistemological). I'm sure the SAB forum (and other sites) have had at least a few threads like this, but I feel that a lot of good movies have been left out and that the same movies (ie Fear and Loathing, Cheech and Chong, Dazed and Confused) are repeated over and over. I'll get it started; here's what I posted at the other site:

I love a good drug movie, but there's also a lot of shit out there. Heres some that I liked and that I don't think have been mentioned. Almost all of these are available from netflix; in fact I looked up my rental history for a lot of these.

Made(1969) One of the best drug movies (and unheard of) I've ever seen. It's the only movie in which I've ever seen ibogaine use portrayed. Addresses addiction but without being preachy and it features a pink floyd soundtrack. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064694/

Grass

Sex, Drugs, and Democracy(1994) Documentary about the coffee houses and brothels in Holland and their tolerance. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111135/

The Trial(1962) Dir. by Orson Wells and based on Kafka's story. Not exactly a drug movie, but the type looking for a drug movie will love this film. It makes you feel like your on drugs. One of my alltime favorite films. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057427/

Pink Flamingos (1972)Not exactly a drug movie but it had amyl nitrate use, amongst all the incest, beastiality, shit eating, and other John Water's hallmarks. Not a movie to watch with your girlfriends parents but it should be seen atleast once IMO. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069089/

Cecil B Demented (2000) Had several depictions of drug use and another John Waters classic. I've not met a person who has seen this movie and not like it. Some of his best. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0173716/

Forbidden Zone I can't remember if there's drug use or not, but this is the ultimate trip movie and the directors had to have been on drugs. Richard Elfman directs and his brother Danny Elfman (Nightmare before Christmas) plays satan! It seriously has to be seen to be believed. One of the strangest films I've ever seen right up there with David Lynch's Eraserhead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074486/) and Jodorowsky's Fando y Lis, El Topo, and Holy Mountain (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0423524/). Highly Recommended. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080752/

Psych Out / The Trip: Double Feature These two movies are classic hippy cinema. Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, and Dennis Hopper in their prime. LSD & STP use amongst others. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063469/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062395/

The Committee (1968) Has a Pink Floyd soundtrack. I don't think there was drug use but it could definitely be considered a tripping movie. There were lots of good experimental films made in the '60's. If nothing else, watch it for the Arthur Brown performance; that guy is unreal!! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062820/

Bad Lieutenant (1992) Typical bad guy role for Harvey Keitel. This time as a coke snorting, drug selling, psychomaniac cop. Get the unrated version. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103759/

Cookers (2001) Extremely tense movie about speed freaks desperately need a nap. The cook meth in a possibly haunted house in the woods and stay up for days. I found the acting very convincing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233481/

Lilja 4-ever (2002) and Fucking Åmål(1998) I loved both these movies by Lukas Moodysson but they are depressing as hell. Drug use is portrayed, but only as a symptom of larger problems like poverty and the alienation we sometimes feel during our adolescents. Both films have a sense of realism, that can only be achieved with non-professional actors. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300140/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/

The Emerald Forest (1985) One of my favorite films. A city child from Brazil is taken and raised in a shamanic society. Portrayal of what I imagine to be a DMT containing snuff. Highly recommended. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089087/

I'm sure theirs more, but I cant think of them right now. I didn't include any movies that were overly preachy, unrealistic, and of the "say no to drugs" variety, and most of them aren't normally discussed in "recommended drug movie" threads. All these movies are ones that I enjoyed and highly recommend. You wont be disappointed.

Cool,

Altered states (1980) - ordinary scientest turns mad scientist researching effects of lsd in floatation tank.

Dead Man (1995) - w/- Johnny depp - peyote use, very nice black and white sequence.

2001 (1968) - just because of the 15 minute sequence

Steppenwolf (1974) - based on herman hesse's book - no drugs but definitely a tripper film.

Chappaqua (1966) - Semi-autobiographical story of Conrad Rooks, who travels to France to undergo a drug-withdrawal cure. soundtrack by Ravi Shankar, v. cool

And of course

Naked Lunch (1991)

Drugstore Cowboy (1989)

I'll think of more later

cheers, Obtuse

william burroughs "Naked Lunch" (early 90s)

not for the fainthearted but def a good movie

not a movie, just a short film but very nice

burroughs " a junkies christmas"

"drugstore cowboy" also has burroughs himself in it, but not a major role in the movie

very "cool" at first but very sad later when that girl overdoses...

trainspotting, acid house, everybody know these...

can't think of any other ones right now but sure will later...

I'm chasing a movie that was made in the late 60s, no idea what the title was

the main actor was that singer from the "manfred mann band" Paul... something

the story was: hippies took over government in USA and LSD was totally legalized...

wanted to see it when it was new (late 60s) but they wouldn't let me in, I looked too young...

I also recommend all those except for Steppenwolf and Chappaqua because I've not seen them yet (I'm adding them to my extremely long list of "must see" films). Good suggestions.

I'd also like to broaden the pool by adding a schizo film.

Images (1972)- Directed by the late Robert Altman(all his films are great IMO). This film seriously fucks with your mind. I don't know how they pulled of some of the effects. Theres a lot of those, "Did I just fucking see that!", or "Am I hallucinating" moments. Amazing. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068732/

Keep 'em coming!

I'm a big fan of the director David Cronenberg. Pretty much all of his films would fall under the "not for the fainthearted". So would burroughs for that matter.

Heh, I think that I have a "song" of that one on one of his spoken word cds. "Bare Ass Annie" was the title of the cd if I recall. That story was my favorite on the cd so I'd love to see the short.

I Noticed you included "The Committee" because of the pink floyd soundtrack, in which case you have to include the others:

Tonite Let's All Make Love in London (1967)

More (1969)

Zabriskie Point (1970)

La Vallée (1972)

Live at Pompeii (1972)

The Wall (1982)

and:

The "wizard of oz" with the "dark side of the moon" dubbed over the original audio track.

Pink Floyd also did loads of documentary soundtracks. including one on fractals called "The Colors of Infinity" (actually it was only david gilmour)

Also, Beatles films:

Magical Mystery Tour (1967)

Yellow Submarine (1968)

still thinking...

Half Baked, with Dave Chappel

Alice in Wonderland- Original Disney cartoon- catarpillar on shroom- big and little sandwiches

Scarface and Spun for sure... Requiem for a Dream has an amazing score - but I get shitty with the pupils dilating when they shoot and the worst case scenario too terrible to be possible or create any impact on me.

In regards to Steppenwolf being a tripper film - I reckon my dad must have been more than a pot smoker in his youth purely because he has EVERY Herman Hesse book!!!

Dont forget Crank

And I gotta repeat the emerald forest simply because its a damn good one and based on a true story (I love when he went into a trance and enlisted help from the frogs)

Might as well throw in medicine man, granted it has only 2 drugs- alcohol and a life saving medicine... but a good movie

I actually listed it because I found it to be a movie that elicited deep thinking within me. It's the type of movie that keeps me up at night when I should be sleeping. The Pink Floyd soundtrack definitely helped though, and I'll be looking for those others that you listed!! More was amazing IMO.

Don't forget Tommy(1975) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073812/ At least two other Ken Russel movies (he's got a lot I've not seen) are trip worthly, Altered States (already mentioned), and The Devils (1971).

Brazil(1985) Most Terry Gilliam movies that I've seen (12 monkeys, Fear and Loathing) are good.

Ben Stiller also played a heroin addict early on in his acting career in the movie Permanent Midnight. I thought it was an ok flick; worth seeing anyways.

Has anyone seen Formula 51 ? (2001) Its got quite a cast of names but I think remained relatively unknown. A drug cook (Samuel L Jackson) burns his boss in search of a fortune for his new formula. Its a bit crazy.

Kevin & Perry Go Large - to watch while on it (anything really) quite funny.

:shroomer::rolleyes:

And Don't forget FANTASIA (1940).

Probably the original tripper movie. The whole point of the film being Synesthesia.

That scene with the mushrooms dancing around - they look a little bit too much like gold tops to me. then in another scene they look like amanita muscaria.

I remember hearing some story about how Disney was into lsd... and then he was a good friend of Dali too.

The first 2/3 is amazing, there are a couple of boring bits, and the last bit is a blast.

--------------------------

I don't know if it counts but Barfly (1987) is also worth a mention, while its about alcohol, it presents are very interesting viewpoint on the way in which Bukowski lived his alcoholism.
