sagiXsagi Posted November 23, 2015 (edited) this is about getting enthousiastic of other non trich columnars really ! please try to get more columnars if you got a warm climate! I guarantee you its fucking worth it 100% and now show off your Browningia hertlingiana's we know some US members got some impressive specimens alright this blue columnar is perhaps one of the bluest cacti and relatively rare . I long wanted to get it, and since I get on along with columnars, I tripled its sizes... should I prevent it from getting wet in winter, or should i get it to be a man and learn what greek winter is about? (its a pussy up to now, lol, we're like a tropical summer without the rain ) I got mine from ebay Edited November 23, 2015 by sagiXsagi
zed240 Posted November 23, 2015 (edited) Here is mine. It got frost damaged about 3 months ago. It has bounced back now though. It's starting to get super fat now it's been planted out in the ground. Got mine from Bunnings, (hardware store). Only cactus to get frost damage here were this one and a hairy pilosocereus. All the trichos were fine. Some shots before it got frost damaged. In winter when damaged.Slightly after the damage and starting to grow out again.I will edit this to show you a pic of the BIG Browningia hertlingiana at the Huntington Botanic Garden later tonight too. Now that sucker is BLUE! [EDIT] - shitty picture. It was a super bright day and I thought I'd get a pic from another angle from the other side. Oh well. sagiXsagi Posted November 23, 2015 awesome! zed, what is your area's equivalent to US zone system? 8-9 ?
MrDoRight Posted November 24, 2015 Man , I really regret not buying one of these . I think I saw one in the depot store
zed240 Posted November 24, 2015 awesome! zed, what is your area's equivalent to US zone system? 8-9 ? This area is a bit of 9 and 10. Hot and dry summers with low humidity. Reasonably wet winters. Some frost, between 3 and 13, (maximum, not often this many), days of frost per year really. But frost is only at night or early morning and some years might be milder and with less frosts. The agave attenuatas really did not like the frost this year either.
spooge Posted November 24, 2015 (edited) I got one of these on ebay a few months back, will edit this with a pic tomoz. If yours did that Zed I may have to watch out for the one here, best it goes in the greenhouse over winter maybeyYour plant seems to have recovered nicely.Nrivers your is looking sweet man, so is yours Sagi. EDIT - pics seems the one here is called azurescens, googled it and they look the same, another ebay gimic? Edited November 26, 2015 by olive
sagiXsagi Posted November 24, 2015 ^^^^^^^^^^^ yeah, that I should put it in a more protected spot too, I seem to have less frost than what you say, though... I suppose keeping it more dry might protect it more from frost Nrivers takes the cake so far
Myeloblast Posted November 26, 2015 Beautiful plants, how old are they sagi, zed, and nrivers? Grown from seed? I tried growing some of these from seed purchased from Koehres with no luck on germination at all, the B. candelaris germinated well, but not nearly as pretty a plant. Some good pics of a huge hertlingiana in here: http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20299
nrivers Posted November 26, 2015 Thanks mate, mine has been in the ground getting close to three years. It was probably close to 100mm when I got it and is now about 800 to date
Evil Genius Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) Hey guys, time for some shameless self promotion. Currently waiting for some Azureocereus Hertlingianus seeds from Peru. Just putting it out there. Edited November 26, 2015 by Evil Genius
Berengar Posted November 26, 2015 Ha, and I just came to this thread to see if anyone has some seeds for sale! EG, please announce when you get them! This is one of my favorite looking plants, I wanted one for years now but cant find any for sale (except a few insanely priced ones on ebay with insane shipping rates), and the last batch of seeds I got had very poor germ rates, and the few that did sprout all failed to take to the root stock.
Evil Genius Posted November 26, 2015 I´ll probably get 2000 and they are fresh from this year. Seed is from Ayacucho. So yeah, will let you know. Love this plant too and was extremely disappointed by the quality on the market.

sagiXsagi Posted November 26, 2015 (edited) mine too was some 10cm when bought from a spanish ebayer as a seedling, it grew to some 30+cm in a single season. To be honest I didn't expect it to go that fast. But I put it in a relatively large pot. I have it for some 9 months. Psyentist Posted November 27, 2015 (edited) Berengar, I have one of these, about 10cm, that you can have if you like? Just pm me your address and I'll get it out to you as soon as I can. Edit: I suppose I should put a photo of mine up. They're only little fellas, got them from Bunnings as well at the start of the year... Hah, they had quite a few of them and while I was looking there was a young kid, about 6 years old, saying, "Mum, can I get a cactus?" "Ok son." She said and the little boy pointed to a browningia. "I want this one." He said. And I thought to myself, good choice lad. He's got the eye already. Edited November 27, 2015 by Psyentist
Berengar Posted November 27, 2015 Hey Psyentist, thank you very much for your very generous offer, but I'm from Europe, and with very high sipping costs, stricter customs checks now because of the terrorism threat and our winter in full swing, I don't think it would be worth it. I'll just try to score some quality seeds this time. But thank you very much anyway!
Berengar Posted November 27, 2015 I just wanted to say, SuccSeed has some Azureocereus hertlingianus 'monstrosus' seeds (20 for $1) for anyone that's interested in monstrose cacti. Don't know anything about the germination rates, but I was not satisfied with their old A. hertlingianus batch about a year ago.
nrivers Posted November 27, 2015 That sounds interesting might have to give that a crack. I also have had some poor results from some of there seeds. Don't bother with the terscheckii mn0531, bought 15 packs gave a few away but have sown the rest and only six sprouted
Psyentist Posted November 28, 2015 No worries Berenger, I didn't realise you weren't in Aus. I usually check the forum on my phone and the location doesn't show up. Good luck with the seeds mate! Those monstrose ones certainly sound interesting if they're viable. Have fun!
upside Posted December 1, 2015 I picked up a bunch of these from Bunnings. Some have died from their overwatering regime unfortunately. I have about half a dozen left.
