prier Posted February 28, 2013 Anyone growing Trichocereus purpureopilosus? I swear over the years the flower is getting more pink. Just a few years ago the petals were white and the sepals pink, now the whole thing is pink. Any thoughts?

Evil Genius Posted March 1, 2013 Hi Prier, I do! Its one of my favorite Tricho´s for hybridisation. Flowers are extremely beautiful and the shape of the plant is gorgeous. Have at least 60 Hybrids with it. The Flower changes from year to year, depending on the general situation of the plant. I have plants that changed their flower color within one year tremendeously. Its something i constantly experience with hybrids.
prier Posted March 18, 2013 Cheers eg. Good to know i'm not the only one experiencing variation in this plant. I must get onto doing some hybrids with it, probably a bit late in the season though now. What have you crossed it with eg? GoOnthen send me a pm, i'm sure we can work something out.

MrDoRight Posted April 1, 2014 Last week from the hardware store I bought A cactus labeled T. purpureopilosus for a good price too . Although I never heard of the species until that day I love how evil the spines are , definitly my favorite cactus ( I say that about every new cactus i buy )
double_action Posted April 1, 2014 I also have a T. purpureopilosus that I got at Home Depot, on the far right.
Evil Genius Posted April 1, 2014 Not sure if this is the right One. Purpureopilosus doesn't have very dangerous spines. But they look awesome. Can you post a pic?
Evil Genius Posted April 1, 2014 (edited) Hi Double Action! Unfortunately, I don´t see one in your Picture either. Can you post a close up too next time you get to it? Purpureopilosus is one the species that´s the most misidentified. True Purpureopilosus looks like Brevispinulosus. In fact, I think Brevispinulosus is a variety of it. Yours might be a soehrensia but that´s just a guess right now. Edited April 1, 2014 by Evil Genius
double_action Posted April 1, 2014 Sure I'll take a better pic later today. It's the one on the far right. It's from Altman, bought at home depot for $6.99.
hostilis Posted April 1, 2014 Here's mine. I have seen lots of variation with the ones at the big box stores. Some with huge spines and some like mine with smaller spines. Here's mine on the left.
Optimystic Posted April 2, 2014 hrm looks more like a young Pascana or Terscheckii @ Double Action
Myeloblast Posted April 2, 2014 Double Action, are you sure that plant wasn't labeled T. poco(aka T. pasacana)? I have the same plant from Altmans, posted a pic of it here: http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=29996&page=57 post#1409 I saw a plant at HD yesterday labeled T. purpureopilosus, but it looked more like hostilis' plant. They had a few purpourpilosus"s with different spination . I wad considering potting them seperate but theyre so darn spiney ha
Evil Genius Posted April 2, 2014 Hi Guys! Double_Actions Plant is something else. Poco, Pasacana or something like that. We´ll see when it´s bigger. The blue color is weird, but that could be the lighting. They obviously have problems with the labels. Hostilis Plant looks a bit more like it. But i don´t think it´s one either. Purpureopilosus has very stumped Spines. You can see the Plant in Priers Picture on the right side. Hostilis, your plant may turn out to be a variety, but you´ll have to wait until it´s a bit bigger. Would like to see this Plant again in the future. The Problem with the Labels may also be due to the fact that the current taxonomy made a huge mess with purpureopilosus. Currently, it was placed under Echinopsis Lamprochlora but that´s a totally different plant.

Also, what can you tell us about the growth patterns in general. Tall columnar or short clumper?
