Whats happening to this little Tricho?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have this little T. pach "Juuls Giant" x T. pach "Huancabamba" about 2 years old & its starting to show some weird growth.

All of my cacti are in a greenhouse & started showing signs of spring growth about 2 months ago now they are all powering along nicely, but this one little Tricho is doing something different.

You can see the different growth happening on the right hand side, the lower growth (in the forth pic) started about 2 weeks ago & today I noticed it happening near the top. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers

yeah but unusual @ this stage of growth!

normally they terminate @ the tip or side if attacked by snails or sometimes just by gentics, have had monstrose seedlings turn to normal growth and normal seedlings terminate aka sausage style...

Part of the joy of growing from seed never know what your going to get..

Neat. I've seen trichs that age put out pups, but always basally. Is the main column still growing at the tip?

Cool

I just thought It was weird as I have a lot at that size & a bit bigger & its the only one doing this.

It is still growing very well from the tip & when I first saw the first new growth coming out the side a couple of weeks ago I thought it might be a pup but thought it was a bit strange at that size & that it pupping half way up.

There has been no damage to this plant bumps/knocks, snails etc.......& now theirs a pup coming out directly above the first just made me more confused  .

Thanks for the feed back.

Cheers

maybe research witches bloom or broom. I forget wich. But there is a thread i started in this forum about a pup throwing pups. Might be what your seeing.

I dont think this has to do with witches broom. Yes it is extremely rare that cacti pup like that but it definately happens. A small wound or infected spine is enough to cause scartissue to be produced and scar tissue pups pretty easily, no matter where it is. That aside, there are some clones that just pup differently. Probably because of genetic defects or something like that so i would definately propagate this plant if it should continue to do that. You know, many echinopsis pup like that so it could even by a hybrid. No matter what, i would like to see how this one grows in the future.

The thing with Witches broom is that the pups usually dont grow very much but pup again and again so you can easily rule it out if the pup should continue to grow normally.bye Eg

You can see they are still growing & getting bigger, there is a new growth coming out, opposite the other one near the top.

This was the first bit of weird growth I noticed, its also the lowest.

These are of the photos of the second growth i noticed, it is getting noticeably bigger.

You can see the new growth starting to come out opposite, near the top.

This is a front on photo of the first two growths.

I am unsure what is happening here, but I am watching with great anticipation

Alrighty I need your advise/ideas.

jwerta you have me thinking aerial graft :),

I am thinking about loping of the bottom growthpost-11291-0-94655400-1351136075_thumb.j & putting it on some peres stock. I have a few concerns, the main one being the health of tricho, I would hate to cause any long term harm or damage & I am wondering if when I cut the growth off will this cause pupping or jeopardize the top two weird growths?

I would like to think the cut would heal, the tricho keeps pumping, the weird growths keep growing & the growth I cut of for grafting takes well & grows B) . But this might be wishful thinking!!

Please feed me your knowledge & tell me your thoughts, I think I am going to need some encouragement before I lance my little one  .

Cheers

Does this mean you are going to do and areole graft in the air or are you thinking of grafting on to an antenna :P

I would think you would have no problems taking that areole off as we all remove pups of our graft stock all of the time and it just leaves a scar.

As you are not damaging the growth tip the plant should continue to grow as normal ( as normal as this one does )

How is the size of your little mutant areole growth compared to the size of a standard pere stock I suppose what I am trying to say is it to big for a pere.

Cheers

That came from me, yes? I had several seedlings display characteristics like yours. I believe it is a form of monstrose growth and I expect that we will see quite a few of the seedlings I grew turn out like this, if they haven't already. My guess is that it's hormonal; that the plants exhibiting growth like this are producing higher than normal levels of a particular cytokinin, which in turn is causing abnormal pupping, or attempts to do so.

Yeh tripsis this is one of yours :),

I got two T. pach "Juuls Giant" x T. pach "Huancabamba" from you as well as a heap of others & there all going great.

I have been waiting to see some weird growth possible in some of the TPM x T.pach "Hauncabamba" but so far there there healthy, plump "normal" looking, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the Tricho above putting out this growth.

What is the Tricho x in the photo? That looks like it is pupping heavily, I was thinking thats what was starting to go on with mine but I pretty sure there not pups anymore, tic-tok-tic-tok-tic-tok........ I guess time will tell.

@got, The bottom growth is quite small & I have some good fat rooted pere here, should be fine .

I tried to graft the very first little growth two months ago, but it was tiny & did not take on the peres. I am going to try & graft the bigger right hand side growth this arvo, if it takes I will attempt to graft the little growth on the left, as I'm now certain there not normal pups.
