Recommended Posts

im slowly getting into folk music, looking at buying my first ukelele, its such a mad instrument! would love to be able to just go mental on one of those things!! i dig mumford and sons(alot) and have started listening to the pogues. man is the lead singer hardcore!!! he puts the punk genre to shame!!! if you youtube the pogues u will get what i mean!

anyhow im after some recommendations of some good, fast folk music~

cheers!!

i be out on my verandah wittlin' some!

Personally I like the 'freak folk' kinda stuff, however meaningless that title may be now that the artists involved have grown and matured away from it

Devendra Banhart's older stuff (Nino Rojo and Rejoicing in the Hands albums)

Joanna Newsom, whom I intend to marry and will take any opportunity to stalk

Vetiver and various related side projects

Cocorosie

Espers

Meg Baird

'Golden Apples of the Sun' is a really nice intro compilation of many of these artists which came out a few years ago, it's hard to find but you should be able to get a torrent.

time to get folked!!

go get a uke incog, i've always wanted one too. beautiful little things. we'll start a folk group together!

some of my favourite albums...i guess you'd call them folkish...

nick drake- five leaves left, bryter layter and pink moon.

all beautiful, gorgeous early 70s folk albums. his guitar playing is some of the finest you'll hear. check out drake's story. a very sad one indeed. the last album 'pink moon' is particularly intense, beautiful and sad.

bruce springsteen- nebraska

this is bruce in his quiet, storytelling acoustic mode. recorded on a 4-track in his bedroom. it's a really haunting album. waaay better than his american rock anthems that he is so well known for.

skip spence- OAR

a late 60's folk oddity. psychedelic and unique stuff. this guy is a legend!

grateful dead- american beauty

known for their extended psych jams and freak out music this the dead's 'folk' album. beautiful acoustic tracks with plenty of harmonies. this is probably one of my favourite albums ever. it's a timeless beautiful classic. i want the track 'ripple' played at my funeral.

you'll dig it i know you will.

folk music not hardcore enough for you?

check out this man:

shane macgowan of The Pogues! ive developed a fascination with the man at present. at first i thought that he sounded really shit, but then i realised how good of a folk singer he actually is! no matter how smashed he is, hes always in time with the music. apparently raised in a house steeped in ancient celtic culture, hes about as irish as one could get!

not sure if hes still alive, id say not, but id say that he makes punk culture look like sissy boys!

i think the pogues are the sex pistols of folk music! ive gone from interested to fuken lovin em!!! u can say anything about shane macgowan but hes got more personality than jesus!

yeah I know what you mean by the first bit. I haven't quite made any realizations yet but we'll see. I can see the punk association,

i dunno, just the messy irish, but perfectly timed and executed voice, coupled with the 'perfect' music. seems he is almost 'one' with the music that is being played.

and i KNOW you will all enjoy this one.. if you dont ill send u a free cactus!

shane macgowan being hassled for smoking backstage.. made me smile :)

I gotta second HM on the Nick Drake account. Beautiful beautiful stuff

pogues WERE punk rock man. Joe Strummer (of the Clash) sung with them for a bit, I think when Shane went off the deep end

What about rodriguez has anybody mentioned him?

his album "cold fact" has some folkey elements and is probably one of my favourite albums!

kind haunting and depressing but still up beat.

yep thats the one. Sugar Man is the song you are thinking of.

He made a couple of albums but Cold Fact is my fav! Its just such a weird mix of musical styles, yet it works so well.

one world is another classic album
