Victorian couple handed suspended sentence in Cairns court

UPDATE 2.05pm: A VICTORIAN couple who gave their 10-week old baby girl half an ecstasy tablet has been given a suspended sentence.

The man, 25, and the woman, 23, who cannot be legally named under Queensland law, pleaded guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm and drug possession in the Cairns Supreme Court today.

Justice Stanley Jones sentenced the pair to six months' jail wholly suspended.

The court heard the baby's father mistakenly gave the baby half a tablet of the illegal drug while on holidays in Queensland on January 4, this year.

Prosecutor Jodie Woodridge said the drug had been secreted among the child's reflux medication and the father had believed he'd been giving the baby this medication.

The baby was hospitalised for two days after suffering seizures but has since been returned to the parents without suffering long-term adverse effects.

The baby was 10 weeks old when she suffered a seizure and was put in an induced coma at Cairns Base Hospital after ingesting half the tablet.

At one stage the girl went into cardiac arrest.

Two days later, the baby was discharged into the care of her parents.

also find it interesting that half a pill would have no long term effects on a 10 week old. that's some small body mass, in a very early stage of development.

chiral's point aside, who would secret something like that where it could even possibly be confused for something for a baby? lots of people maybe, but it's fucking dumb, like putting draino in a baby bottle then placing that in the fridge. asking for trouble.
