holymountain Posted January 5, 2008 greetings!!! visited a nursery in sydney the other day and came across these beauties for $190. i'm assuming they are t.pachanoi. they are quite large the tallest probably being close to metre. all up i think there are 8 or 9 in the pot. three big ones and a few pups. now 190 is a bit of money for a musician/student type but figured it was an okay price for so many cacti. any thoughts? should i pounce on it? there are a few more there as well for the same price but varying in the number of pups. i'm educatedly guessing that these are t. pachanoi so if they aren't please let me know so i can put the money to more responsible use. cheers! tonic Posted January 5, 2008 They are T. pachanoi. The price seems a little steep, but not too bad. San Pedro usually sells for about $1 for each centimetre. You should measure them and work out the price according to the actual measurements. Healthy looking specimens I might add.
Teotzlcoatl Posted January 5, 2008 How much is $190 Aus in US dollars? Sounds like alot to me... Besides those are boring "P.C. San Pedro". Can't you order something cool?
holymountain Posted January 5, 2008 (edited) comes to 160 US dollars. i know they are your standard san pedro and therefore not cool or exotic. but i honestly could care less. i'm not trying to impress anyone with my collection. plus the place is down the road from me so i wouldn't have to 'order it' and then pot it etc. i figure theres at least two metres worth of cactus probably more plus they are already rooted and growing etc. Edited January 5, 2008 by holymountain
Teotzlcoatl Posted January 5, 2008 They're big... But still. I can get 12in for $20, maybe less. I'm sorry about the conversions...but how many feet equals a meter? Anybody got a converter link?

holymountain Posted January 5, 2008 (edited) measured it. roughly 10 feet all up. works out i guess $19 a foot. which is cheaper than $1 a cm and seeing as i can't be bothered waiting for cuttings to take root and start growing i might just make the purchase. ...this was the best one out of the bunch but the other ones for sale weren't too bad either. tonic Posted January 5, 2008 (edited) If it measured over 2 metres then I would say that if you have the money and you want it in your collection then buy it, the price isn't too bad, could be cheaper, but as you said it's already growing healthily in a pot with plenty of pups and isn't damaged. Also you won't have to pay postage on it. Don't mind Teotz' he says some pretty strange stuff sometimes Edited January 5, 2008 by Phosphene_Dream
Teotzlcoatl Posted January 5, 2008 Yup. Looks like a good deal. I would trasfer each of them to their own pots when I got them home. I'd also put them in new soil and add some fertilizer.
tonic Posted January 5, 2008 Yup. Looks like a good deal.I would trasfer each of them to their own pots when I got them home. I'd also put them in new soil and add some fertilizer. I wouldn't. I would let it get used to it's new position and leave it grow undisturbed till next spring and repot then.

tonic Posted January 5, 2008 jono the 'PC' pachanoi is pretty much what we call San Pedro or the 'Backeberg clone'. Predominate Cultivar.

Teotzlcoatl Posted January 5, 2008 I suppose I was being a bit lazy. And Phosphene's advice is right. I wasn't really thinking about the weather. I suppose much of Aus. can get very cold and wet....
apothecary Posted January 5, 2008 Even if it was hot and dry, why cut up that specimen? It's clearly putting out decent biomass without any division? Especially like Phos says, if you put it in a bigger pot, or five thousand million times better, straight into a hole in the ground half full of cow poo.
