Hey @shonman, how difficult is it to propagate? Ive spoken with people that have it (in Peru) and they claimed it was difficult... I find that hard to believe, I would have thought it would strike readily from cuttings if cared for...

I accidentally fried the last new growth in sun .

tips, tops closeup .

i also wonder

... can it be cloned from a leaf

as some have done rooting caapi

and many have done with viridis and friends ??

I'll bet it can being a riverine habit lover ... try some in an aeroponic pod ? ...

defo works for caapi and is quite repeatable

Re: difficult to propagate....

maybe not difficult per se

but VERY SLOW using conventional methods

lol tell me about it .. the long game is defo an indispensable skill set for husbandry ..

I still reckon it might beat propogating T' validus head to head if any consolation :)

maybe get some other things on the go to fill the wait with where applicable?

What else is really cool that grows near it?

to use the "usually more mushrooms hiding close by when ya find one" method might be fun if poss..

may also be good to see what else liked growing in those conditions side by side if ID'able

and maybe some temp and humidity readings if poss , even if just in the prop setups

although if aeroponic I guess there won't be much variation from 90-100% humidity

and ya know,... anything you can think of of the kind of things you might wish you had done in hindsight/retrospect lol

I am not going to provide every detail , but will show someone as I go along

working on propagating this plant ....

first, set it up in a more sheltered environment

work on disinfecting it, while getting some new growth to work with...

placing a few of them inside an aquarium with a plexiglass cover .

%@;*~!! The image is upside down !!

Would be well proud mate and I'll bet they're awesome mates to while away the hours with too

odd the picture inversion , the image links are the right way up if viewed directly but not the thumbnail or photo viewer..

and if linked they invert upside down IMG_2267.JPG,

...strange but either way a right click and view image takes the url of the image and displays it upright if you have that function on your browser.

Love that tank shot and will be a choice historical image imagining ahead :)

Top stuffs Shonman!

I went ahead and placed more D Cabrerana into the aquarium.

it has a plexiglass cover over the opening.

the new growth is responding well, will post a pic soon.

new growth is super sensitive.....slight changes in environment can fry it quickly.

like, increased  wind, or sun , or less humidity.

i have had an idea, of creating disinfected little terrarium worlds

where ethno plants could be grown out with some cool tiki statues, crystals

and various artistic as well as required practical elements...

for example, a small Ps Viridis bonsai type thing,

with small statue of an Inca/Aztec temple,

a few stones m maybe some small figurines...

also, sort of large bonsai of different varieties of ethno plants/ trees....

Many people think of our relationship with domesticated animals.

.....our relationship with plants....is also very extensive.

to the point where it has been said that some plants

even stop bothering  to replicate themselves

sort of counting on people to do it.

Like some sort of giant pollinator...human insect thing that the plant counts on

and lures in with its special qualities.

It almost seems like  some specimens of cacti, like T. Pachanoi, in some cases..

appear to have been selected by people through time...to have less spines.

But I digress...

A lot of the new growth seemed to dry up and shrivel in the big aquarium

not sure why

now I regret putting all the plants in there..

took 2/3 out .

i had overwatered a bit

and it is 90f+ hot in the grow area ...

what might cause this to happen ?

there is plenty of humidity .

i wonder if insects sucked the new growth dry or ? See next post about that ...

what do you think ?

here is an example of how the new growth died...IMG_2368.thumb.JPG.f89cafa982db63d72f51f6a85c39863e.JPGIMG_2368.thumb.JPG.f89cafa982db63d72f51f6a85c39863e.JPG

The leaves seem to have small holes in them

with little drops of liquid on the underside .

these have been on the plants ever since I got them ... what do you think causes this??

wierd I wonder if it's some sort of bug hatching or using the plant as a host in some way...

never seen anything quite like that before but the closest thing I could imagine it to be is some sort of scale?

do they come off? and are the drips squishable(killable)?

..probably need to call in the super SABbers with the years n experience under their belt I reckon. .. or someone from the area the plant's from that might be able to recognize it and say.

maybe it likes bigger air?, or .. some airflow more than it would like some humidity?

It's really annoying tryna figure out the why's but experience will probably crack the nut for you after some time..

No idea about yr prob, sorry. I'd suspect bacterial, because of increased humidity and reduced air flow, but can't be sure I'm 100%.

Is a good lesson to learn- when changing any parameter, keep some material back in it's original place. Always. Not only does it mean you have reserve material, but the remaining group acts as a control so you can compare.

I'm not being unsympathetic at all- I recognise the temptation for a quick fix/ progress, and it's one I've succumbed to occasionally myself with the same results :/

Goodonya for staying on top of it and making sure your babies didn't suffer too much for too long

Sorry i forget the technical term amd cant really see, you could see better in person...does it look like the plant took up too much water, exploding parts of the leaf membrane?

Yeah hey.  Somebody help this guy!

My money is on bacteria too or some type of damage caused by water sitting on the leaves (water with some contaminant).  it seems very localised to those spots which probably were water drops?

It does look like some sort of bacterial infection, which can sometimes be secondary to a pest attack.

I'd put a few leaves in a sealed ziplock bag and see if anything hatches out so you can identify it.

Ok , I have a clue about the holes in the leaves!

seems to be water related ...a friend said :

" It appears to be simple Oedema.  The rupturing of plant cells due to irregular water up take.  It is a physiological condition.  Often it is caused by either over or under watering.  Soil that is too moisture holding can cause it.  Because of our rain here I use high porosity mixes and do not usually get much of this. Here is a link to U Missouri

Not to be a downer, but I know a lot of people who THINK they have D.c., but only two who actually do. Even McKenna's vine is the wrong species. And so are the two species sent out by everyone's favourite seed/plant source in Peru. And the shipment of rooted cuttings that made it into the USA a few years ago and should be on the market by now. One good botanist I know even thinks that the D.c. that the papers were written about isn't D.c. Yeah, LOL.
I am not good enough at IDing it, so can't be sure about this one, but will find out. Nonetheless, the many so called D.c.'s I've obtained over the years are all interesting plants. Some possibly even more interesting than D.c. itself. So even if this one is another misID, it will probably be worthwhile growing it anyway.
