Hairy Cereus ID

Plantsoma

Question

Can anyone help ID this one? I'm pretty sure it's a Cereus but i have no idea on species. I've had it for 6 years and it's the first year it has flowered.

Also could be an orcereus (although I have never seen one flower).

Flowers are similar to my pilosocereus glaucochrous, but have a lot more red.

Check out www.columnar-cacti.org for some help?

Thanks All! EG, the camera i used was a Sony DSC-H2. Slow exposures on tripod. I still use a EOS100 but the cost of film is a bit exxy and i find the sony pretty good for a point and shoot. It always needs the colour contrast adjusted a bit though.

curious how the female organ is protruding before the flower has opened, have seen brugs do the same thing.....wonder if we can learn something about the plant from that habit?

is it self fertile?the brugs are not.

also couldnt quite see if the flowers had any hairs on them?

t s t .

Wow, I had no idea the "old man" has such beautiful flowers, those are really cool!

I think Cactus Art is the best ID website I've seen to date, but it didn't have this one oddly enough.

I found a good link for you to use for a positive ID on my second favorite site:

Heres a picture of the mother plant when i took a cutting years ago.

I'm not sure, but it looks a lot like Pilocereus alensis.

I think thats the one. Definately looks like the photos.

other cacti as well. A. myriostigma often does this. seems like a good method for late pollen droppers and to help crossing...hard to self if the girls goods are hanging outside the bud, and the boys are locked up tight inside.
