hey there Confusa, Chem scarification can be by a number of methods, common ones are ethyl alcholol, ether & prob most common- Gibberalic acid. Check this out. They did trials that showed GA @ 400mg/L for 36 hrs then 25 degC gave 75% germination. Gibberalic acid (GA) is easily sourced-ebay, local scientific/lab supplies, sometimes even chemists. I'm interested in getting hold of some seed, did you score it from the couple of ebay sources, or elsewhere?

Dont destroy the plant!! . Deal with the ants and you'll deal with the scale. Some ant granule products work, just sprinkle around the pot and on their trail. Or give em a sacrificial plant. Ants love farming black & brown scale on all Ficus & most Syzygium (lilly pillies.) Or get a big plant pot saucer (bigger than your carth pot), fill with water, put a few brick in the middles, and then sit your pot on top. Then kill the scale by spraying the heavily diluted oil mix as per PH's instructions. Once youve sprayed them, they will suffocate as the oil blocks their little breather hole in their outer waxy layer. Just make sure you shake the hell out of the mix just b4 spraying so as to atomize the oil & water.

you sure these pods aren't a scale? Ants are notorious for bring them to plants and farming them- their pay-off being the scales sweet secretions.

I'm growing bush tomato Solanum centrale which has brown seeds that look like an eggplants, but there is another central australian bush tomato, Solanum chippendalei, which has small black seeds which i think were traditionally discarded as inedible.

Couple of avenues to try: -Contact all the Plant Rental business's in your area. You know, the ones that install and maintain plant displays, specimans in office buildings, restuarants etc. They often have more space in their nurseries than they require. By the way, they can be very good resources for used pots too (often free) -Vocational teaching facilities that deliver horticultural courses usually have nursery & greenhouse facilities, and can be prepared to rent space. -Contact NGIA - Nursery & Garden Industry Australia.

Thats the busniness!! Spider mites are soft bodied little shits and it doesnt take expresso grade chems to kill them. Their 'resilence factor' is due to their fast and prolific breeding/life cycle. The chemicals dont kill the eggs. Systemics have an impact but not total, and end up producing a population with immunity to that chem. The trick is to break the cycle by hitting em every 3-4 days, so you are killing the newly hatched before they reach breeding age.

I reckon after 5 days of breaking down the survival rates after hatching would still be enough to give you the shits! I forgot to mention before, but Neem oil is also good (mix it with the Pyr, as long as its not neem soap, as soaps mess with the Pyrethrums effectiveness) as it works on insects reproductive systems.
