0 zed240 Posted February 10, 2015 Are they the same species with painted areoles/spines?
0 Evil Genius Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) Would suppose those could be from the Mammillaria Campotricha Group. There are various types and it could be one of them. But i´ve never seen them with red spines. Very cool. http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/MAMMILLARIA/Mammillaria_camptotricha/Mammillaria_camptotricha_bru/Mammillaria_camptotricha_bru.htm Edited February 10, 2015 by Evil Genius
0 Evil Genius Posted February 10, 2015 Or maybe Mammillaria Carmenae. I know they come in different color variations. No matter what, I would definitely guess this is a mammillaria.
0 Dreamwalker. Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) I have seen pic's of these from the states.....often sold in mega stores....they are spray painted/dyed ...my guess. Seems a trendy commercial thing to adulterate a perfectly good cactus in this way. but can make for a magical (in a unicorn pony way) garden. http://www.succulent-plant.com/name-your-succulent.html "A range of cacti with brightly-dyed spines (purple, blue, red, green and yellow) sold under the brand: "Kosmic Kakus."" https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Kosmic+Kakus+cactus&iax=1&ia=images Edited February 11, 2015 by Dreamwalker. 0 prier Posted February 18, 2015 Mamm gracilis "arizona snowcap" originally bred in Australia, There's a nursery in Europe where they add dyes to the water, as well as a glow in the dark dye. Can't remember the name of the nursery sorry.
0 hostilis Posted February 19, 2015 (edited) I've seen them straight up just spray paint cacti, Skin, spines, and all. Then market them as "Kosmic Cactus" It's kinda sad, lol. I think they were mammilaria gracilis. On the sign that said "Kosmic Cactus" also said, "These cacti will grow beautiful bright white spines on new growth".... Haha. 0 hostilis Posted February 25, 2015 Yeah dox, those super colorful ones in the big box stores are fake. But I agree with prier, E. pectinatus var. rubrispinus is a beautiful plant with almost neon purple looking spines.
