so using google, everything i can find on colossus seems to be zelly's... mine doesnt look much like the pics of his at all. well im pretty sure its a trichocereus at least

Your trichocereus is Altman's Pachanoi. It's very distinct, and super common in the states. You can even find a couple mixed in at Home Depot on occasion.

The plant looks basically like PC on steroids to me. Much fatter, V-notches, and proportionally longer spines. There's something distinct about the thorns that I can almost always call it though.

EDIT:

Hey man you posted the same pic of this Pach like a week ago that I called as Altman's- I ID'd it as such and you confirmed it to be Altman's. Where'd this 'Collosus' come from?

Greetings all! Just wanted to say a quick hello, and a big thank you for all the generous, pictures and information shared on this forum. Happy gardening! - a fourum noob

(pics)

Howdy man. Welcome to the forum

Are these seed grown, or clones?

The second reminds me a lot of Altman's pachanoi... I actually got some from Home Depot, they were hiding in a batch of PC pachanoi.

sausage, yes, altmans on the second, yes, the last one is san pedro x peruvianus, what ever that means, and all of 'em pc, yes EG ;)

Got the 4 branched one from a grower in the Imperial Valley. ive assumed it was the altman's 'tru pach' which i have found before at home stores, none of mine are this big tho, nor do they look identical, neither do these two look identical. since the experts were talking about the clone that i recvd this as, i thought it would be fitting to get an opinion. i tend to agree tho with you on the 4 branched one tho, probably being the same clone which altman distributes---- which may be tpqc apparently. learned something new on this thread! my tpqc from zelly is just a crest and has yet to throw reverts

btw, i got the sausage from the same guy and it has saussaged twice, and i said yes to pc as well,,, which,,, they are not.

Hey,

I think zelly can answer that better than me since he's got both clones in his garden. Let's see what he's got to say about it ;)

Ohh, yeah Altman has 3 clones that he sells: One is the one that's semi-monstrose, PC, and then one that looks identical to the pictures you posted in this thred, especially the second of the two pics. I think you're right that those might be a different clone in both pics!

i personally believe there maybe one other there gets lumped witht he tpm/ totem pole,,, that gets fuller ribs longer spines (occasionally) and never shows monstrose. its distributed by another large dist that altmans got there tpm from originally called CCC. i believe it is sold as a short spined peru. i got one by itsel and one in a pot of tpm, its pretty distinct- i refer to it as totem pole, not to same its the same as the totempole/ tpm, that others refered to on this thread.

Hey,

I think zelly can answer that better than me since he's got both clones in his garden. Let's see what he's got to say about it ;)

well from zelly's perspective this thread started out about zeus, a clone that originated from philocacti, who then spread it to certain growers world wide, where upon those growers chimed in with pics of their cloned copy of zeus.

then there was an abrupt divergence from the original thread with a bit of 'thread crapping', that had absolutely nothing to do with the original discussion of zeus.

in zelly's opinion, if you cannot trace your particular plant directly back to philocacti, you do not have a clone of zeus, regardless of what your particular plant 'looks' like.

hopefully this thread crapping will diminish to nothingness & we can get back to discussing zeus in this particular thread

IMO the #1 thing that distinguishes SAB above all other forums is the level of maturity exhibited by most of its members & hopefully new members can pick up on that and be reflective of that in their posts.

If you're referring to me Zelly, I was just questioning his assertion of a plant being the clone 'colossus' when he previously discussed it to be Altman's... and that's only because I, much like you, am very specific about clone names and am very bothered by people using them loosely.

Hopefully that's not the case; I have a lot of respect for you and would hate to leave any bad impression.

Anyways, without further dilution to this thread, I'll shoot a bit straighter!

How long ago did you name Zeus? Is he from seed?

Yeah, a few years back, bit told me that it looks like his T. argentenensis, however M S Smith said that argentenensis is a clone name rather than a true species and since I haven't received it as a argentenensis , then it probably isn't ;)

How long ago did you name Zeus? Is he from seed?

Ive named it in the summer of 2011 but I've had this clone since 2005. The owner of the nursery told me he had him for over 50 years. Edited by Philocacti

you are totally right, very frequently I get 8. Judging from other pics in the thread the plant is showing 7 often also.

So I had this Zeus freakish cutting for some years. I traumatized it a few times and finally it started to regrow again.
