This cactus of the four winds seems rather interesting from a spiritual perspective

After having just heard of it and seeing what info was out there ... I found this

http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/cracking-cryptocacti-0000202-v19n5

so I thought I'd share

...maybe a lot have already seen it but it's new to me... and maybe a few more

but anyway ....

is there a thread already dedicated to the Four winds cactus ?

where is it please?

If not....

Any information about its history/botany would be very much welcomed and appreciated

and in the mean time , I'll try and hunt some more info to add ;)

i have a bridgesii with all but one branch 4 ribbed*,

also have a mystery trich with 4 ribs (i think it's a hbx?) but it's too slow growing,

*edit: i think it has something to do with being root constricted in a pot, it should be repotted but i like the four ribs and i don't want it to get more

I reckon if you had a garden with at least a half dozen trich plants exhibiting 4 rib growth you'd be less impressed.....

in fact, you'd probably conclude it was all a buncha marketing bs....

I'll look forward to watching out for it happening , if it does .. on any of my plants ....

and keep on hunting for "the least grown" trichos up a different path :)

Don't think it's got anything to do with constricted roots. I've got a near 5 foot Pilosocereus in the ground that's stayed 4 rib from day 1, threw a new stem last summer that started out with 5 ribs but just an inch later reverted back to 4 ribs.

Kinda skinny but plump and nearly square in shape.

I had one etiolated bridgesii go 4 ribbed. I grafted it and then it kept on with 4 ribs. I cut it and it pupped 5 ribbed pups. I think sometimes it does have to do with the plant not being stressed.

Aren't they all of the four winds in terms of cosmology?

Four ribs seems only related symbolically but if you study the use of the Mesa then they all fit four winds/crossroads symbolism.

Saint Peter in symbol represents the crossroads and lord of wind.

The Cactus of the Four Winds is clearly only symbolism and, well, superstition. But whatever. I'm pretty sure it comes out of Peru, and wonder if Bolivian T. bridgesii and T. scopulicola with four ribs, which is much more common, ever got the same sort of historical reverence. Anyhow, I've only seen one proper T. pachanoi that even gave any indication of having four ribs. And here it is, hanging alongside some B. caapi in a Chiclayo witches market.

Here are some more plants in Chiclayo...

I have 2 stable 4-ribbed Trichocereus, 1 a SS02Xbridgesii and the other is SSS02Xpachanoi.

I have 3 other but they're unstable shifting from 4-5 ribs.

I'm thinking out loud, but isn't the 4 wind thing = 4 corners of the world = north, South, East & west. I think it's a biblical thing.

4 ribs do look pretty cool & the history & mythology of ancient Peru is extremely interesting. certainly can't deny it's an interesting topic

cool I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun observing their nature over the years

i think its more ancient than biblical but nice one and thanks for a cool reply ,

like the 4 guardians type thing in witchery i was more inclined toward.

Hey Hukstable, your plant looks like it's the longer spined T. scopulicola form. Four ribs isn't unusual for the plant. My own had four ribs, but sadly switched to five last season.

I seem to have a number of plants that are 4 ribbed. A few bridgesii and a few scops that have stayed that way. They look pretty cool but I don't particularly like them any more than my other plants.

is this the 'woolunda monster pedro'???

That was my first thought when I saw it too.

Here's my Woolunda MP from a couple of months ago. Has grown very well since then, has a couple of pups and it taller and fatter now. Looking forward to it growing weird for me at some stage. :)
