Evil Genius Posted April 30, 2014 Hi Guys, this is rather educational because it´s something rare. I will post more information and other pics later, but wanted to show this first. Please take a close look at the pic and tell me what YOU see!
Berengar Posted April 30, 2014 Slug damage? Or are you talking about the weird whiteish formation on the right? Did the wasps make a nest in the cactus??
Evil Genius Posted April 30, 2014 Something like that, yeah! I bought a large collection one year ago and some of the plants have bugs. It's not wasps but it's sth i never had before! I will post more pics as soon as i'm done with the authopsy. Can you guess what type of bug it is?
Berengar Posted April 30, 2014 Wow! That's kinda cool, but also really horrible! Mostly horrible. Any critter that maliciously damages cacti is squishing material in my view. I can't really think of anything that seals it's nest with mud except for wasps and bumblebees, but neither of those would eat cactus really. Is that even mud? Does the cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum, lay it's eggs in holes like that?
Evil Genius Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Yes, it´s a moth. Not sure if it´s the species you mentioned because the larvae does not look like it, but it´s certainly dangerous and I will make them to paradise. It´s only on the plants that haven´t been treated with Insecticide, but it´s still scary as hell. Apart from the Snail Damage, the plants look healthy and i posted this so you guys see what can be out there. I am not concerned because I can handle them, but if that happens to a prized plant, it still hurts. I´ve noticed some moths in the house since I got the collection, but never saw them attacking Cacti before. I´m at war now. Philocacti Posted May 2, 2014 I saw a pic of what seemed as an earwig crawling inside of a trichocereus
Bryce Posted May 2, 2014 Hard for me to see but it looks like beetle grubs to me. Needs the plants toxins to taste bad so it won't get eaten.
