Well done jwerta you got it the little babies are Harrisia jusbertii. I will let you know when the grafts are ready. :)

Thanks for playing everyone we will have to do it again some time.

Jox when the time is right some will come your way :)

Once I verify that the seeds I have are the real deal I will offer them up so we will no longer be the poor folk with no access to Harrisia jusbertii for grafting stock.

I've got a small (10cm) seedling of Jusbertii that my dog stood on and damaged, If anyone wants it send me a PM. I will cut it off above the damage and don't see why it wouldn't throw roots.

Yes it is one of the stocks that he uses. By all the reports that I have read it is supposed to be very good. I like the size of it as a stock fatter and more long term than Pere and not as big as Pach. I have been growing skinny Pach under lights to fill the void at the moment until I can get a Harrisia army going.

My big plans of making Harrisia available here has taken a big hit today. I got my first ever customs letter and the first time I have had anything opened and it said that the are going to destroy my 1000 Harrisia jusbertii seeds. :( The mistake I made was not having them labeled as a Trich as I did with the first lot I brought in ( which never got looked at).

I will find another way to get these here but part of the problem is they are coming from Cactus Plaza who are in the Netherlands. I am sure that anything coming from there would be looked at more closely than other places.

If anyone else wants to try there luck and order 1000 seeds I will take 500 and pay for them in advance and take the loss if they get picked up :) I just don't want to push my luck at the moment as I am about to order 500 Astro seeds out of Europe. :innocent_n:

I held off saying where I was getting the seeds from because I was concerned that a rush of packages coming from Cactus plaza could have had all orders intercepted and I was also going to distribute 500 seeds through this community but that's all hot air now as I dont have the seeds. :(

That is no good mate :o,

What are there reasons for confiscating & destroying them? If I read your post right, you said they were labeled Harrisia jusburtii & from what I can find they are appendix II with CITES & should be fine. Or is this a WA thing?

If its a WA thing then I would be happy to try & get the next lot for you, let me know.

I don't have a lot of time at the minute but It was AQIS that snaffled them. The list that I checked on don't have jusbertii listed but there are heaps of other Harrisia that are and are a permitted seed. There is also one or two that are banned. The lady that I spoke two told me if they are not on the list then it is a banned import but I would think that jusbertii just hasn't been added to the list. I want to find out how they go about adding them to the list.

When I get some time I will look into this further and find out if its just the WA list but as they are not on the list I would think that will be the same for all states.

They do look a lot like Trich seeds. :innocent_n:

I am also considering getting them sent to another country and then getting them renamed and repackaged and then sent on to me as coming directly from the Netherlands the package runs a high risk of being inspected.

Cheers

Cool mate let us know how you go.

Maybe if you let them know CITES says its ok, I read that you can bring it into Aus as a stock with a CITES appendix1 cultivated plant grafted onto it & you only need paperwork for the scion.

Good luck.

Got I have a crested loph that came on HJ

I am going to be degrafting it to put onto trich stock in the very near future.

You are welcome to have the rooted length I have left over If you like. A nice warm grow room and some BAP and you shall have an army of HJ in no time :)

That would be really cool thanks mate.

I have one little one at the moment plus about six on pere and I would think around 150 seedlings but any help in getting propagation stock up and running will be most welcome.

I have made this my challenge to make this stock readily available in Australia.

I cannot believe that H jusbertii has been in this country for many years but only a few people have it and no atemp seems to have been made to propagate it for other growers.

I've got a small (10cm) seedling of Jusbertii that my dog stood on and damaged, If anyone wants it send me a PM. I will cut it off above the damage and don't see why it wouldn't throw roots.

Did any one grab this?

Yeah GOT that Jusbertii is gone, sorry.

Sorry be an ass but there has been a good amount of self incrimination in the last few posts. Remember importing anything restricted is against the law and should be kept away from public view, we are using a public forum.

Looking good, awesome project...

last year or was it the year before I mixed up a couple of my trichocereus seeds and now I have to find out which are which...

GOT to love that games of taxonomy...

Hey my Harissia jusbertii made 2 fruits this year, I suppose it was polinated the nights teh other Harissia (Eriocereus) was also flowering.

Thing is I forgot the fruits at the roof and the ants of course took them.

I will have you ozzie guys in mind in the future.

Thanks guys.

I am slowly getting my set up sorted (its only taken 3 years  ) but I still seem to manage to turn most of my seedlings red at some point.

There is also another 20 odd pots with seedlings in as well all put down around the same time plus another 15 pots that I put down around a month ago  ...................................and that tray of mixed cacti seedlings but luckily there is only about 200ish of them still going and still have no idea what I have in there.

I never did post what I have sown.

Ariocarpus , Turbinicarpus, Astrophytum, Gymnocalycium, Aztekium, Blossfeldia, Arthrocereus, Epithelantha, Setiechinopsis, Encephalocarpus. Lobivia, Loph's, Trich's :)

This the last lot sown (16/9/2013)

Frailea sp ( seeds from a crest )
Epithelantha micromeris ( seeds from a crest )
Turbinicarpus swobodae
Ariocarpus fissuratus
Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus
Astrophytum asterias
Astrophytum myriostigma
Astrophytum capricorne
Gymnocalycium ( from random seed pod )
Lophophora williamsii sierra santa rosa
Lophophora williamsii ( my own seed )
Trichocereus peruvian ( Rosie 1 open pollinated )
Trichocereus peruvian ( Rosie 2 open pollinated )
Ariocarpus furfuraceus
Lobivia famatimensis

Hey Mutant (good to see you back posting regularly) :)

Harissia jusbertii seeds will always be sort after down here.

I am going to cut the first lot of mine of there pere stock this season and root them. I will then graft another lot onto trick stock this time as the seedlings are a bit bigger now.

Cheers

Thanks mate, feels good to be back among you sick cactophiles.

Reddening of seedlings is fine as long as they dont burn (turn white and all) . In my limited exeprience, seedlings grow much better in a bright spot, filtered sun is a must at the begining, but I think the fastest you acclimatise to brighter , they healthier the seedlings grow. My two cents anywayz.

Aztekiums, Turbinicarpus, Fitzcarraldo ! :) good luck!!

Any updates on the seedlings Got? Would love to see how the ario's and jusbertii seedlings are doing.

I've been trying to find a domestic source for H. jusbertii seeds in the U.S. without much luck. I did find a cheap source for seeds being sold as Eriocactus jusbertii but I can't find any other information to confirm this is synonymous with H. jusbertii. Can anyone confirm this to be the same species? I know Eriocereus jusbertii has been used, so I'm thinking it's just a mistake.

I'm also curious about other species in the Harrisia genus being used as grafting stock. Has anyone had experience trying them (like H. bonplandii, guelichii, pomanensis, ec)?
