Hi Barnard, welcome around here! Dont think it will stay like this. Bridgesii´s of that size tend to grow another rib. bye Eg

Hi Bernard :)

I was given some 4 ribbed bridgesii after searching for ages. then within weeks after I got my hands on them they grew another rib. :( good luck with yours though.

Nice find, only if there was a way to ensure 4 ribbed growth. Best of luck 2 ya :)

Yeah, the number of ribs is not genetically fixed (but the bounds are approximately fixed, through dependence on other variables), but is a function of current number of ribs, light levels, nutrient flux and water flux.

In other words, a plant can usually drop or gain quite a few ribs, and they're not "locked" into a certain number.

Another interesting meta-stable cacti phenomenon is the phase of the areoles. On a standard 6-rib Pachanoi, usually there are two phase groups, with three in each. In the more interesting ones, there are 3 phase groups, with two in each. On 7-ribbers it becomes a bit more complex and a lot less clear-cut, but you can still see phase patterns. And on 8-ribbers, usually 2 phase groups of 4 and 4. As an engineer and musician, I find this very interesting. ^^
